This is San Diego... apparently Bowie Pies branched out. Its SD outlet in 1943 (per the CD) was at 1147 Front Street; the view is south on Front toward the Pickwick Hotel, now the Sofia.



By posting the street views below, I'm not advocating extending our reach as far as San Diego, but since the old pics have already been posted...

They sort of put a new spin on the term "mass transit", don't they?

Wow, that's one of the best aerials I've seen in terms of really showing each block on Bunker Hill and its relation to the next. Seems like the plane they took the picture from was relatively low - maybe it's just me? Too bad so many of the hill's buildings had already been destroyed by the time this photo was taken.

So! Then you would have us believe that these people stepped out of upper story windows, and then proceeded to move rapidly and in a decidedly downwards direction, until they reached the ground?

I don't know, but thick lines and arrows showing the direction of suicides in progress seems a bit much. In spite of the tragedy involved here, I can't help but smile.

Historic Aerials

The site is now on the south-west corner of Wilmington Waterfront Park (formerly known as the Harry Bridges Boulevard Buffer Project). The picture below is looking west, so Shipwreck Joey's was in the top left corner of the green area.

Around 1943 my family lived in Coast Guard housing in Wilmington...wondering if anyone had info/pictures of the area.

Hollywood Park race track is shutting down in two weeks and will be demolished.

Any noirish historic images of the race track to post in its honor?

The Porter Sanitarium seems to have been built in this location in 1924, and before that to have been at Burnett, "two miles from Long Beach." (Where exactly is or was Burnett?)

It looks like the thatched roof motif did not last long. Or maybe the "breeze" blew the palm fronds far away onto another auto court. ;)
