Good morning folks. Just wanted to let everybody know about this website that has some information on trees that are listed as having historic value in Los Angeles....i know many of us love hearing about the old trees that once graced this city.

Thanks Cyndihdz, but the Arcade palm at Exposition Park is not on the list nor is the great double row of palms at the Orthopedic Hospital. I guess they don't qualify as "street trees" |

Mystery locations in SCE photo gallery
Found a tweet today from SCE with a photo gallery of mostly mid 50’s locations that you might find interesting. Some have cities named, but no addresses. Stonewood restaurant and Eden Roc (Downey) caught my eye. Looks like most are by photographer Joseph Fadler.
http://pstp-edison.com/avila.html I’m not at a computer so I can’t capture and post the photos here until Monday or Tuesday. |

Your post reminded me of Sam Drucker. :) http://res.cloudinary.com/frameworkm...ion/pic_57.jpg |

I was thinking more along the lines of LARGE city post offices as oppose to general stores. You know...like government built edifices & whether or not they were designed to include commercial spaces. __________________ That said, have we seen the interior layout / design of the main Los Angeles Post Office? this one https://jhgrahambooks.files.wordpres.../chs-31328.jpg I thought perhaps Mr. Ball's cigar store was located within. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/x46rZa.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...921/ZYTpdT.jpg F.H. A little bit of extra fodder for the beaten horse. https://i.imgur.com/A8TgEH7.jpg Google Books - The Iron Fist Here's a look at the block looking south over 38th St with Santa Fe Ave on the left. Jack Doyle's Bar is the long low narrow building on the corner. Next door to the right is the Vernon Arena and right of that the entrance to Maier Park. The original arena and the Training Camp were located in the areas immediately above the bar in the picture. Maier Park was demolished sometime in the 1930's. The charred remains of the Vernon Arena in the August 1927 aerial. https://i.imgur.com/V1F7YUG.jpg Some early Jack Doyle's Bar pictures - https://i.imgur.com/bkLHfae.jpg https://i.imgur.com/gAkA4Gn.jpg For a while it was called the Thirst Emporium. https://i.imgur.com/8Y5HzyV.jpg Google Books - California Baseball |
Thank you Noir Noir! I discovered that pic over the weekend.
I had already labeled it [URL=https://imageshack.com/i/pmI4q1b7j]https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/I4q1b7.jpg[/URL I thought the large building next to Doyle's 'Thirst Emporium' might have been part of the bar as well. (not sure why I thought that) I wonder who owned that little 'homestead' just beyond the outfield fence. (can you imagine how many balls ended up in their backyard? __ update: THE CAMP I placed the camp to the right of the arena because this mentions the camp being behind Doyle's Bar and not to the side. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...921/oc1fPr.jpg which made me think the boxing camp was originally located where the arena was eventually built. (but that doesn't explain why I moved the whole camp to the right does it. ;) [caught in the act! _ |

I found this over the weekend as well. At some point the Vernon Arena [2353 E. 38th St.] became known as 'DOYLE'S STAG HOTEL AND RESTAURANT' https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...921/BBhiK0.jpg and whatever took its place was known as the 'OLD VERNON ARENA CAFE' https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/kXmBYo.jpg pretty cool. -interesting when a name harks back to an earlier era. _ |

I only found one other reference to Doyle's Stag Hotel.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/6rpics.jpg the iron fist as you can see...this says Doyle's Stag Hotel later became a bank. _________ I stand corrected: two references. [same source] https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/fZSz1f.jpg the iron fist _ |

Sunday evening 'mystery' location. [five photographs being sold as a group)
"historic Los Angeles Hollywood cool building under construction" -seller's description https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/dn62Kt.jpg EBAY Does anyone recognize this place? There is intensive excavating going on. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/AZnFFX.jpg EBAY I wonder what building that is on the left? They're practically digging under it. another view of the main building. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/VX3WGg.jpg EBAY It looks like they're placing some the excess dirt in this area. This is similar to photo #2 except a truck is emerging from the excavated hole. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/4jXjul.jpg EBAY I like the guy sitting on the edge of the steam shovel. what's his job? Here's the last pic.... showing, what I believe to be, the back of the building https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/Rb6xmo.jpg EBAY Does any of this look familiar? __ |

This is fascinating stuff about Doyle’s, you guys - I’d have never figured that anything interesting would have been in boring, industrial Vernon. Bigger than downtown, but with a current population of only 113!
https://i.imgur.com/P7J13d8.jpg This stuff is doubly interesting to me as a long-time boxing fan. Man, I’d have loved to have seen the fights that went on in that arena! I guess none of the old buildings are still left… it also looks like Santa Fe Ave might have been widened at some point… https://i.imgur.com/fZq8w8l.gif |
