An old harbour like that with a market, a park and the museum with the city enclosing it would be quite good for tourism in our region these days.

Urhontorni looks taller than everything pre-war in Stockholm. Which shows a difference between Sweden and Finland in those decades.

Will you be filling out the area with square blocks before tackling things like bridges and such?

I really love the skyscraper architecture of North American cities, especially the fact that they have skyscrapers from many different eras in many architectural styles. That's what I want to bring to Halvoo. But I still don't want to make it look like a North American city but an Nordic city with our architectural styles, the abundant parks and a vibrant city center with residential and cultural buildings amid commercial buildings.

I will be building the city one square kilometer section at a time - with bridges and any other infrastucture - following a regular pattern from the center of the map towards the outer rim.

Here's the update:
The Old Barracks of the Imperial Russian Army from the 19th century - at that time Finland was an autonomous part of the Russian Empire - now house the offices of several cultural organisations.

The area that today is known as Tehtaanpuisto park, was an industrial area up until the 1980's. Today the only reminder of its past is the former main building of the Rosenqvist textile factory, which has been converted to a cultural center and renamed Kulttuuritehdas ("Culture Factory"). The park is also a popular place for open-air concerts.

The white building in the foreground is the northernmost building of the Eteläniemi district, which was built in the 1990's and early 2000's after the South Port port facilities moved to the new Halvoo Port in 1992.

Awesome job! The second shot is beautiful.

First section is nearing completion. The building with the octagon shaped tower is Nikolainkatu 1, one of Halvoo's early high rises from the 1920's. It's 53 meters tall to the top of the spire.

Again, well done

Thanks, Spidey!

I've now completed the first one square kilometer section (out of 100!). At this pace I'll finish the city in about 50 years :D Well, hopefully it won't take that long as I'm planning to cut back on detail after I finish the city center (the first four square kilometers).

Very nice,...makes me want to do a city again.Have you thought of putting in some chuches.Northern euro cities have a few dominant spires in their skylines.

Mocholate Nov 12, 2016 11:52 PM

Hey guys, long time no see! Last t I me I came here was on a shitty pc, and now we check updates by smartphone anywhere we want. Lol
Vellu this city is insane! The most realistic ever.

How long has it taken to do the first square?

Toyota, lol. Me too! I bought a new laptop yeaterday so I can start one. You should too!

toyota74 Nov 13, 2016 1:27 PM

@mocholate....Have sketch up downloaded again but haven't quite
got around to using it.I may do so as we are in winter here.Vellu inspires
me from time to time.

Vellu Nov 26, 2016 5:37 PM

It's good to hear from fellow old-timers! I hope you find some time for SketchUp again. Gold Coast City was the reason I learned how to render and Toyota's cities where always very inspirational with their unique and good looking buildings.

Here's couple of Halvoo's highrises from different eras: Kirkkokatu 56 is a large office building from the 1970's. It's 74 meters tall. Its more slender neighbour, Jaakontorni (officially Kirkkokatu 59), is from the 1920's and is 63 meters tall.

Cool... I love buildings from the 70's,rectangular,concrete,stark and a little bit grim. They really give an urban feel,I also like the way the Dutch take these towers and give them a modern look which can be seen in Den Haag and R'Dam.
I will start a city once I learn textures and hopefully make a large one...

verticalextropy Nov 26, 2016 9:55 PM

Veeery satisfying to see the skyline gradually extruding up! Very realistic, and iconic, and look how it brought everybody together

Yeah, for me too. I have to restrain myself a bit to keep the city mostly lowrise to give it that Finnish feel. The tallest buildings are yet to come, and unfortunately none of them are is this next update.

Wow! The city is really looking good!
I want to go there!

Vellu Dec 26, 2016 1:04 PM

Thanks, Skydragon!

In the 1920's several high-rises were built along the Satamakatu avenue. One of them is Kannisentorni. It is 55 meters tall.
