That's the Joseph Mesmer house, once at 3500 Manitou Street. A nursing home is now on its hill.

There is also www.historicaerials.com which can have a lot of different years depending on location, although in this case they had nothing between 1980 and 2003. They have watermarks across the images but they're still helpful if you're looking for something. There is a dissolve function there that lets you fade between any two sets of images with a slider bar.

Sweet! Thanks so much! :)

Newbie warning!

Hello all! I came here in search of a good look at the Old Hall of Records and found myself immediately hooked. From then until now, I've been going through the entire thread, chasing the end page from 792 to 810. What a magnificent ride! You all have taught this longtime Angeleno a great deal about his city. I hope to be able to make my own modest contributions as we go along from here.

I have a partial answer to a pictorial question posed by Ethereal Reality back around page 804:

I can tell you that the repeated blue "Wilshire" element was the logo for Wilshire gas stations, and in fact these look as if they were taken directly from the actual gas station signs. Wilshire gas stations were very common up in Northern California, but fairly rare here, as I recall. The company was bought out by Gulf in the mid-Sixties.

[edit] The previous information was from memory, and is not quite accurate. Gulf completed its purchase of Wilshire Oil Company of California, an LA-based firm founded in 1914 by George and Victor Machris, by 1960, but apparently continued to operate it under the Wilshire name until 1966.

Abraham Lincoln High School is 100 years old in 2013!

An undated but early view:

LAPL -- http://jpg3.lapl.org/pics13/00026080.jpg

Lincoln's principal from 1916-1945 was Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus (1884-1967). She was California's first female high school principal and went on to found the National Retired Teachers Association in 1947 and AARP in 1958. [Info from: http://lhsaatigers.org/School_News.html and http://assets.aarp.org/www.aarp.org_...andrus_bio.pdf]

This photo of Lincoln High is dated c. 1928, but is apparently earlier. The tall building in the rear was the auditorium. (The home next to the school is the former Woolwine house. More on that at http://oldhomesoflosangeles.blogspot...-broadway.html):

Woolwine home gone. Was there a patio on the roof of the main building?:

Buildings on campus were closed after being damaged in the 1933 Long Beach Earthquake; this photo is dated 1934. From LAPL: "The school was closed to students on November 2, 1934, after engineers reported many of the buildings were in danger of sliding down the hill toward North Broadway because of shifting ground of the hill. The engineers and geologists reported three of the buildings are in danger of collapsing down the hill upon other structures. The auditorium, music and library buildings will be torn down. The English building has been cracked from the weight of holding up the library with braced steel and concrete supports. The English, administration, and gymnasium buildings will be repaired. Other buildings will be used temporarily."

Also October 30, 1934. From LAPL: "A newly arisen "tent village" is shown on the grounds of Lincoln High School on North Broadway where three buildings have been condemned and three others closed because of earth slippage beneath the hill on which the school is built. Students are attending classes in the tents and buildings which are not in danger. The auditorium, music and library buildings are to be razed, and the English, administration and boys' gymnasium buildings will remain closed until the other structures, which tower over and threaten them, are removed." The Mae West flick advertised on the billboard is Belle of the Nineties:

Thank you for the information on the Wilshire gas stations Otis.
That image of the fence had me stumped for quite some time.

Intrigued, I googled your name Otis Criblecoblis and images of W.C. Fields popped up.
Is this a character he played in one of his films?

Anyway, welcome to noirish Los Angeles!

Thanks, ethereal_reality, and I'm happy to be of service. Yes, "Otis Criblecoblis" was one of W.C. Fields' many pseudonyms, used for the writing credit in Never Give A Sucker An Even Break (which by the way uses the Hyperion Bridge and environs to great effect at the end).

This article was brought to my attention by a fellow forum member. He was leery of posting about it.
He worried about the mystery site being found out and subsequently covered in graffiti and trash.
I certainly saw his point. We discussed it, and decided to go ahead and do a post since the exact location is never given.

I have never watched NCIS, but a lot of filming was done at the building where I've been working for the last 10 years. My understanding is, that this building was used as the NCIS headquarters for many episodes. This is a biomedical campus, and is used heavily for filming due to its single controlled access location in Santa Clarita. Last major film shot at this location that I'm aware of was "Something About Dave" starring Sandra Bullock. Television filming is a regular occurrence here. Let me know if you have any questions.

Elizabeth Short case....

Dr. George Hodel was arrested for incest and child molestation in 1949--....booking photo.
Incidentally, Dr. Hodel is considered by many to be the prime suspect in the Elizabeth Short murder case....better known as the "The Black Dahlia" which was the nickname given to Elizabeth Short (July 29, 1924 – c. January 15, 1947).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psb9e9066e.jpg

Dr. George Hodel's booking photo taken at Hall of Justice Justice on 10.6.1949

Excerpt from Commander Tom Vetter's television interview, September 2, 2004: "I was a detective then in 1962 and I was driving Undersheriff Jimmy Downy and he was going to lunch with then Chief of Detectives, Gordy Bowers and they were good friends. As we were driving along somehow the Black Dahlia murder came up in their conversation. And I heard Jimmy say that, "Oh that [Black Dahlia case] had been solved, but it will never come out, because it was some doctor they all knew out in Hollywood."
