8080 Sunset / 8150 Sunset / Hayvenhurst / Garden of Allah Hotel
 

Yes, that's right - Nazimova came to Hollywood in 1918 after signing a purported $13,000 per week contract for Louis B. Mayer at Metro Pictures and set about looking for a suitable movie-star mansion. She settled on the one that stood at 8080 Sunset Blvd. It was named Havenhurst by real estate developer William H. Hay.

He built it in 1913 for his wife, but she didn't like it so the poor sod had to build another place, which he did on the site of what is now the Directors Guild building. Nazimova bought a 99-year lease on the place for $65,000 and spent another $65,000 giving it a makeover, thus turning it into what we're more familiar with as the main building of the Garden of Allah Hotel at 8150 Sunset, which opened in January 1927.

During the intervening years Hayvenhurst was where Nazzy held her Saturday evening salons where interesting people gathered to talk about interesting things -- and a legend was born.

I've never heard of such a tunnel. Does anybody know anything about it, or is it just an urban rumor?

I'm impressed. I never managed anything like that. I just made the same rainbow cake over and over.

Seems that I recall these type of imbedded-in-the-floor urinals as being the chief culprit for pee-splattered shoes. Which, back in my day, would have been Bass Wejuns worn with white Adler socks. So hard to exhibit sartorial splendor when part of your ensemble is dappled with urine. Dogs would follow me home.

The first image above shows the side of the Beckman Auditorium, which we saw in post #39730. The trees have grown outside Baxter Hall, but the building looks unchanged.

The Tabernacle was at Francisco and Lincoln which is now next to the Harbor Freeway one block west of Figueroa around 8th Street.

I couldn't find them on the thread, e_r, but I seem to remember you posted some 1920s photos of the area around the
Swedish Tabernacle (Francisco, Florida, Lincoln, 8th). They may have been ebay photos. They had specific locations and
dates (e.g., "West on Lincoln from Francisco, July 6, 1924"). Do you remember? Perhaps someone else posted them.

I'm wondering about the mural in the Children's record section. It bears a striking resemblance to a Mary Blair work.

I thought I'd finish the week with a mystery location from Julius Shulman. It's "Job 4546: Carl Maston, Kengott Brosmer offices, 1969". I've left out a similar shot. I believe the car is an Alfa Romeo GTV.

Thanks, GW. When I checked your address in the 1973 CD, I found that the company was apparently named "Kenngott-Brossmer Inc" and not "Kengott Brosmer". No wonder I couldn't find it! They seem to have been a design studio. The 1987 CD lists Soundcastle Recording Studios at 2840 Rowena Avenue.

I checked the historic GSV images, and found that the building was covered by plants until recently.

I am pretty sure this is PE's Macy Street Yard. The building in the right background of photos one and three is the carbarn. Compare with: http://www.pacificelectric.org/pacif...ict/car-barns/
