Modern Art or Dingbat? U Decide

I'm pretty sure the artist who designed this dingbat was a fan of Alberto Giacometti.

LA Shilla House has a (rather awkwardly blocked-off) Batchelder tile fireplace (with a strange collection of objects on the mantle). Batchelders are worth plenty ($2.5K just for a 7 or 8 tile mantle), but most people don't know what they are. An entire surround can be valued at many thousands of dollars. I hate to think how many of them end up in dumpsters every year...or stuccoed over.

This house appears to be a Korean owned Bed & Breakfast Inn....Mr Kim. Seems to be popular with the movie industry people and nearby companies..

I guess Dana was counting on The Crowded Sky, that great aerial soap opera, being a big hit (it was released on September 2, 1960). He had good taste in Dingbats.

Poseidon's Underworld, the drollest blog on the net about film, has a great review here.

Dingbats

For those of you who love & appreciate Dingbats (we'll have to agree to disagree on that issue), the beauty on the right is one you can feast your eyes on:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/xIBgxe.jpg
https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api...FH9Ngub8lJoZc=

Yes, I'm being snarky. Couldn't resist.

Thanks to Tourmaline for the photo.

I do love the name of Ethereal's/ Dana Andrews' "Lido Capri" - and the "sculpture" on the wall ain't all that bad IMO.

Finally, Gaylord, you have your point about the un-practicality of preserving historical buildings if you don't have someone with the big bucks to buy & preserve them. Just what developers would say. Put up the money, kiddo, or knock 'em all down & fill in with parking structures, dingbats & mini malls. Let the cash roll in. Just exactly what's happened all over L.A. Hey, progress! Onward and upward. I'm not a zillionaire preservationist so I sadly can't argue with your premise.

As a point of interest, the wonderful old two-story Mission revival house w/tower & huge palms that I mentioned, overlooking Ocean Park, was demolished in the early 70's, when the area was shabby and undiscovered. Main Street was a dreary stretch of bars, auto parts stores and thrift shops. For whatever it's worth, when the area later became hot and desirable - and old houses were newly appreciated - I like to think the place would've been saved and refurbished. Bad timing.

Once upon a time while I was creating my Visit to Old Los Angeles blather, I--somewhat active as a poet :koko: --was inspired to write a poem.

https://s26.postimg.org/dyimt4fy1/Gibson.jpg
source:Wikipedia

No, not that kind of a poem

https://s26.postimg.org/iloouw3ax/Byron.jpg
source: Wikipedia

There, that's better.

Someone actually dredged it up and complimented it today--OMG--and I thought, "Heck, why not share it at NLA?--it's appropriate in its way." So, for better or worse, for your maybe pleasure and kind of delectation, here it is:

— Salute —

So proud, those soaring towers stretch
To point the sun to us.
Their peaks, their stretching lines
Proud boasts, bold gambles won.
You too can hear his angels sing
Who built these monuments of joy
So long ago, his gift to us.
Yes, they still sing
To those without deaf spirits,
They sing,
Their grimy faces raised in niche, at coign;
Festoons adorning, though darker now,
Pilasters rich with fluted rills
The streaming rainstorm streams there,
Thrills to spatter off a satyr's nose,
Or, intimate with Venus' clothes,
Whose face shows tears of seasons past,
Pools within her draping folds,
And runs off straining titans' arms,
Whose muscled stone still holds aloft
Their mighty builders' dreams.

But we fail them.
How many masts
How many poles
How many staffs
Stretched out, stretched up—
The bugle-calls of builders' dreams—
Jut naked now
Our unresponding flesh
More cold than builders' brick
More flint than builders' stone?
These naked flagpoles say to me
There once was joy in dreams.
Are we too impotent, too weak
To honor masts that call to us?
You cannot proudly flaunt your dream to me,
You,
Who cannot fly those given you.
You,
No flags, but only wind!
Inhabit first the house once built
And raise its banner to the sky,
And in the living of that dream,
The catching "now" of your dead "seem."

:runaway:

Crowded Sky

Can't let Gaylord's excellent photo from "The Crowded Sky" go without mentioning the wonderful Jean Willes , one of our B-movie & TV faves - there on the airplane stairs above Keenan Wynn. The Jimmy Barnes Story. 1961-Sadly it was not voted an Oscar but certainly deserves one. Filmed on location in Inglewood, LA County.

As the saga proceeds from one recreational outing to another, Jimmy had to eventually pay for all those favors and treats.
Later on, he was supposedly detained at police Hq., let loose and remanded to his parents.
Its an instructive tale for high school age boys.
Is it noir? You decide when you watch this short video. [BTW there's a Part Two of this mischievous film. Things go bad with hints of tragedy.]

If I am not mistaken, Highland Avenue morphs into Cahuenga Blvd, south of the first image. For comparison, nearby French Village images on Highland, circa '38, do not evidence the same street lighting. Presumably the Cahuenga street lights were removed and changed with the Freeway development. another
