I've labeled some of the buildings from the panorama. The Martz Flats have already been mentioned by e_r (see here for color pictures). Some of the information below is from the 1909 and 1911 CDs, and some is from the 1910 Baist map.

Library of Congress

Here's a better look at the Hotel Baltimore in an image dated 1905-1907. The building behind it is labeled "Pellissier Block" on the Baist map, but the writing on the tower appears to say "Block Pellissier".

Detail of picture in USC Digital Library

USC have titled this image "Exterior view of the Los Angeles Athletic Club building on the corner of Seventh Street and Olive Street, ca.1911". To me, it looks like the Hotel Baltimore again. I think they based the title on the board at the side, because the Los Angeles Athletic Club didn't open until 1912. The Athletic Club had roughly double the footprint of the Hotel Baltimore, as can be seen on the 1914 Baist map. It's still there, and was mentioned recently in a post by e_r.

When I lived in L.A. I had a friend who would say "The Calla Lilies are in Bloom again" whenever there was a lull in a conversation.
It was really funny at the time. I'm not sure why it was so funny :), but it was.

This building between the Wilhelm Apartments on the left and the Hotel Francis on the right intrigues me.
I can't quite figure out what going on with the facade. It almost looks open-air with a grand outdoor staircase in the center.

You're looking at the back of the building in the panorama. From the 1910 Baist map it appears to be 634 S Grand Avenue. The 1911 CD lists furnished rooms belonging to Mrs Mary Benson at that address, with several residents also listed.

I searched the various flood photographs on NLA, and I believe this is a new one.
(found earlier in the week on ebay)

There's no helipad in the video - they land on a flat grassy area. The musical act being advertised is the Ames Brothers.

Here are the basics that I know (or think I know).

When Angels Flight started about 1901, the Olive Street station was just a small shelter.
I think this may be it next to the Elks building.

About 1910, this beautiful station was built. Here is a photo, which I believe Michael Ryerson
posted (sorry if it was someone else).

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps3f45c4d7.jpg

Here is where I start to get lost. By the early 1920's, the station was down to about one third of its size.
What happened? It appears in this photo that the bottom of some of the pillars were still in place.

Then, maybe sometime in the 1930's or 1940's (again I don't know for sure), someone with absolutely no architectural
ability tacked on the ugly addition which remains to this day.

Does anyone know what happened to the 1910 station and why was it never restored?

ER - Pretty ironic that the movie sphinx also got buried in sand and had to be discovered by archaeologists.

I'm gonna go with some kind of subsidence issue, look at the angle of the rear column stump in the 1920's shot, or even tree roots pushing up the foundations? you can see one in the background of the 1910's shot.

Hell even the 30's addition has a crooked slant on it

I'm guessing that the street was closed when the warehouses/depots were added to the produce market (late '80s/early '90s?). It looks like 8th Street was still open in 1980, and intersected with several cross streets which are no longer there. This view also shows the Goodyear Service Station which BifRayRock posted about here (it's to the right of where I've labeled E Olympic Blvd).

I second FredH's comment about the irony in this story. Next thing we know, these arachaeologists will start dying off from a mysterious curse....

Ha!...They do have a nice little museum in Nipomo where you can see some of the things that were dug up from the dunes and pictures of the original set.

I walked by it twice today and wondered, does anyone know when they painted it that awful orange? It does look seasonal now with Halloween coming up, but... I understand it has been orange for a long time.
