Buffalo, New York - Grant Street/West Side

The West Side of Buffalo is adjacent to the Niagara River, which runs south to north and separated the USA from Canada. Grant Street runs north-south through the middle of the West Side, parallel to the popular Elmwood Avenue/Elmwood Village neighborhood. For the most part, the Wes Side has been able to maintain the majority of its built environment, and has been home to waves of immigrants since the 1860s, which continues today. Although this area has been generally poor for the last few decades, gentrification is occurring as people are moving in after being priced out of the adjacent Elmwood Village neighborhood.

Grant-Ferry intersection remains the heart of the neighborhood, but there are no images of that immediate corner in this photo spread. Most of the images are from the area near Grant and Lafayette.

Heading south down Grant Street from the Black Rock neighborhood, passing the Buffalo State College area, which has been in the process of redeveloping a formerly run down section of Grant by building new apartments, dormitories, and other campus facilities:

View of Colonial Circle, looking down Lafayette Avenue toward Grant Street. Statue is General Bidwell, Union officer killed during the Civil War. The building seen to the right is Lafayette High School, where immigrants speaking over 40 languages are assimilating in the West Side. Richmond Avenue, which connects to the Circle, is the currently accepted dividing line between Elmwood Village and the West Side neighborhoods, although in former decades Elmwood was also considered West Side.

So is the Peace Bridge, Front Park, Symphony Circle, and that area part of the West Side (or West Village, as I have heard it called), or is that the Lower West Side? Or are both areas all one neighborhood?

I would say Symphony Circle is where West Side, Lower West Side, Allentown, and Elmwood Village all kind of come together. That is sometimes referred to as the Kleinhans neighborhood (after the music hall designed by Eliel and Eero Saarinen). North Street/Porter used to be the old city limits back in the early 1800s, but other than that I don't think there is a universal definition of the limits of each of the neighborhoods. I included the River in the Black Rock section mainly historically since it was the location of the Black Rock itself.

Neighborhood names evolve. For example, the "Elmwood Village" didn't exist until the 1980s or 90s, before then it was sometimes called the Elmwood Strip, and considered part of the West Side.

Link to City of Buffalo neighborhood maps - in some cases there are smaller neighborhoods within the larger (such as North Park within North Buffalo) but overall it is decent.
