:previous: Interesting Tourmaline...good job in eyeing the Singer Midgets billboard. (I thought that one sign said "Frozen Steam")
-nice collection of photographs. If only this amazing monument had been built! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/538/GekhD4.jpg eBay "A huge monument to commemorate the start of the army's round-the-world flight in 1924 from Clover Field, Santa Monica Calif., and serve as a beacon to guide flyers to the field, is being projected by Geoffrey F. Morgan, and has enthusiastic backing. The model of the monument, to rival the Statue of Liberty, was completed by Murrell(?) Gage....and daughter are showing." http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...537/gjs62l.jpg I wonder where the beacon (the actual light) would have been located...atop the globe?..or perhaps within the globe if the globe was glass (so cool). _______________ While driving the perimeter of Santa Monica/Clover Field Airport in the google-mobile, I came across this 'mystery' structure in the southwestern corner of the airport. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...540/cjkahR.jpg gsv a closer look http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...538/Bwkt78.jpg gsv Is it an old radar installation? or perhaps old support beams, from what used to be a gas tank? Or how about an abandoned foundation for an over-sized monument to rival the Statue of Liberty? ;) (I'm kidding) Here's an aerial. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...540/BZHeqN.jpg google_earth. :previous: If you look closely there appears to be a single line (a path?) connecting it to the rectangular building on the right. Maybe HossC (or someone) can dig up some old aerials of the airport.;) __ |

I haven't had a chance to Google what it is, but it's been there since sometime between 1952 and 1964 (below). The sharp corners on Dewey Street have been rounded off over the years. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...irport1964.jpg Historic Aerials |
:previous: thanks Hoss! hmmmm....installed during the Cold War.
I wonder what's making that dark triangular shadow? ....embankments? a scooped out area? As most everyone knows, Ciro's (the building) is now the Comedy Store, but I didn't know was it was something called "it's Boss" in the 1960s. the photo is date 1965. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...538/q4GXSs.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...633/fkaNF3.jpg eBay Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer In The City" :): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5bUmx-hk-c just for comparison.. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...907/7H60hW.jpg corbis __ |
Speaking of monuments.
This 1,100 ft. "Angel Tower" by artist Brett-Livingston Strong was 'supposed' to rise at 3rd Street and Bixel. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...633/93Io7s.jpg old file / also found at http://la.curbed.com/archives/2010/0...or_the_101.php Why 3rd and Bixel of all places? I do not know. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...901/xVngk6.jpg old file of mine "Mr. Strong designed a 350 ft. Angel sculpture to sit on a 750 ft. tower-of-babel-esque platform that would house galleries, shops, several nondenominational chapels, a 5,000 seat concert hall and a revolving theme restaurant." "That's a total of 1,100 ft. total, taller than the Library Tower which would have made it the new tallest structure west of the Mississippi." http://la.curbed.com/archives/2010/0...or_the_101.php You can file this one under 'pipe dreams'. __ |

Enigmatic homemade(?) Business card.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...911/VpxXmx.jpg eBay Do you think "Luke Luqueer" was his real name? ;) from the look of the card I guess he was an automobile salesman. -oh, and the part that says "Come on down and buy a car sometime." lol "12th and Flower for Floating Power." -floating power, Huh? .....but why the photograph of the three airplanes? __ |
:previous:
There's a photographer named Luke Luqueer listed in the 1942 CD. His address is given as 9023 Beverly Boulevard. There's also a Frank S Luqueer listed in various sales roles between 1917 and 1942. He seems to have been married to Gertrude E Luqueer, and Jeanne Luqueer appears in the later CDs at the same address as Frank and Gertrude. |
