The New York State Supreme Court late Tuesday afternoon dismissed a lawsuit against the rezoning of the former Domino Sugar factory site in Williamsburg, Brooklyn that was crucial to the redevelopment of the site...

The developer said it is on track to begin construction of the $2 billion redevelopment of the 11-acre Domino Sugar refinery site along the Williamsburg waterfront. The plans call for mixed-use development with 2,200 residential units. CPC expects to break ground on the initial residential development on the upland parcel next year...

The redevelopment plan was approved last July by the City Council. The developers said they plan to redevelop the 100-year-old landmarked refinery building and its famed Domino Sugar sign. The new Domino project will take 10 years to complete."

Exactly right. The massing is really really great, but Im afraid that if they use cheap concrete faux-brick paneling, it will look bad regardless. Materials are--as always--key.

I really don't like keeping the domino plant in this development. I know it's a nod to the heritage of Bburg, etc, etc. But I think a incredibly modern center piece to this development would be more fitting.

It's a pity they didn't turn the plant into some cultural facility or retail center rather than condos. It is too interesting a building to not be open to the public.

It's been awfully quiet at the Domino Sugar Factory lately, which can only mean one thing: time for the community groups to swoop back in! In that downtime, the Williamsburg Independent People (WIP) group is hyping an alternative plan that makes like London's remade Bankside Power Station-turned-Tate Modern and "envisions the site as a mixed-use cultural hub that includes galleries, event spaces, a hotel, and a marina, as well as 200 affordable housing units" (compared to Viñoly's 600). The primary argument concerns the neighborhood's infrastructure: the group argues that so many new residents will require expensive upgrades to transportation and sewer systems and that an arts center "won’t be a burden to the government but will pay its own way." (Interesting idea, but we know a few non-profits that might beg to differ.) On the money-making front, WIP proposes a gallery-condo function, where regular Joes can pay to display their art collections.

My favorite part of these community group plans are how woefully out of touch they are with economic reality. Thats what comes from living in rent control apartments for decades--a complete and utter lack of understanding that there are people out there who actually have to pay money to make this city work and grow. An arts center that will pay for itself? Ha! And who is going to pay for the demolition and parkland development? Squirrels have a better grasp of finance than these idiots.

I was thinking of this project recently and how amazing it would be if the towers were clad in corten steel. I doubt that would happen but if so, it would become one of the better projects in the entire city.

What would really be good is a "signature" tower behind the factory building, something that plays fof the bridge. That won't happen, but we'll see how this design plays out when we see the materials.

Sugar Plant Closes After 148 Years

Why not make a museum out of it as London did with the Tate Modern.
