The CEO of Disney probably would spend the money on a new glitzy ride to make more money. Remember that Disney is firing hundreds of older expensive employees and replacing them with cheaper foreign workers. Its always the bottom line. Did anyone ever see the Walt Disney personal office exhibit? One of the best small exhibits ever seen at DL....imo. There was a different office shown back in 1976. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pss3wisq1q.jpg disneydose dot com [Another great exhibit was the old ''20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" back in the 1960s.] http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps5xasd2yq.jpg Here is a 4 min video of the exhibit: https://youtu.be/qryBQsxjh38 |
612 S. Lorraine Blvd.
The building permit for this home was issued on July 7, 1919. This illustration in the June 15, 1919, Los Angeles Times
might show 612 S. Lorraine: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...s.jpg~original Proquest via LAPL Yes, I know it says 524 Plymouth. The article with the drawing says 524 Plymouth was being built for Harry S. Goldberg. But he lived at 424 S. Plymouth, which does not look like the drawing. Also, there is no 524 S. Plymouth. There is a 528, but it doesn't look like the drawing either, plus it wasn't built until 1926. So I kept poking around, because the home in the drawing looks somewhat like this Windsor Square home, shown in the April 1920 The Architect and Engineer of California: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...q.jpg~original HathiTrust I drove the Googlemobile around Windsor Square until I got to 612 S. Your back yard is looking pretty green for the middle of a drought, Mayor Garcetti! http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...e.jpg~original Bing Maps Even with politicians living at 605 S. Irving, 612 S. Lorraine has probably been the scene of more jokes. A December 3, 1986, building permit shows 612 S. Lorraine was the home of comedian Shecky Greene, who is exactly one month older than comedian Don Rickles: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...i.jpg~original LADBS |

484 homes burned. As a direct result of the Bel Air Fire, Los Angeles initiated a series of laws and fire safety policies. These included the banning of wood shingle roofs in new construction and one of the most stringent brush clearance policies in the United States. It appears that those wood shingle roofs were a fire waiting to happen. |

I was going to post this Julius Shulman photo yesterday, but then I came across a load of extra pictures to sort through. This is the only one in "Job 416: Welch's (Long Beach, Calif.), 1949".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original Getty Research Institute It turns out that the definitive photographs of Welch's were taken by Maynard L Parker. First I found this exterior view. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original www.theseamericans.com Here are some more of Maynard L Parker's pictures from Calisphere. Unfortunately, they're all much smaller than the image above. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...7.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...8.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...9.jpg~original All from calisphere.org The address of Welch's was 4401 Atlantic Boulevard. You can see the distinctively-shaped restaurant on the north-west corner of the intersection with E San Antonio Drive in this 1972 view. By 1980, it was gone. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...0.jpg~original Historic Aerials I'll finish with a color postcard from the 1950s that I found at SDSU. After double-checking this thread, I discovered that it was originally posted by Beaudry in post #2316. Welch's apparently billed itself as "Southern California’s Most Beautiful Restaurant". There are more color pictures and some additional information in an article at onbunkerhill.org. The article also covers Grisinger’s Drive-In Coffee Shop on the opposite corner of the intersection. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original SDSU Library & Information Access |
:previous: That's quite a find Hoss. I love the distinctive look of Welch's.

Thank you to Hoss C for his recent post on this unique and ultra modern restaurant....and comments by ER.
My parents would often take out-of-town guests to Welch's in the 1950s. I loved the restaurant. It catered to children and that's why my parents took us there. Plus, the food was outstanding. The owner, Mr. Welch, had been the manager of the Navy Officer's club at the Naval Station Long Beach during WWII. His mother had built several restaurants herself back in the 1930s. Therefore the whole Welch Family had a lot of food establishment experience. I'm acquainted with Mr. Welch's daughter who was hostess of Welch's. We've exchanged emails. A few years ago she sent me some old Welsh's matchbooks. Photo taken from the south east corner of the intersection. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psipscbmph.jpg That's a red lobster in the palm tree...;) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psrllxljkb.jpg This salad bar was a soft pink color and they always had some bright red lobsters on the ice. Families were seated in this area at the right. Couples were seated in the Tropical Room in previous post. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pslxzgqzit.jpg The text at the bottom of this kid's menu is a testament of how kids were treated at Welch's...always welcome, even though the establishment was very adult oriented. The kid's plates were as elaborate as the adult servings....just a bit smaller portions. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pslank9t4q.jpg Sadly it was replaced by a nondescript medical building. |
:previous: Interesting CBD...thanks for the additional information (and memories) of Welch's.
New to NLA. 1958 Kodachrome slide of the Vine street Brown Derby, with a very nice looking car out front. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...921/MvH5dJ.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/Orig-1958-35...wAAOSwqfNXjvyy Has anyone heard of Miss Pat Gresham and her organ? ;)) _ (I've lightened the slide quite a bit / the derby was pretty much in shadow) |

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...m.jpg~original UCLA The original building permit image is not available, but it's dated September 14, 1908. There is another permit from August 7, 1964, which refers to a "parapet correction." Maybe that's when the building got its haircut? |

:previous:Blaster, you probably saw Pat Collin's at the nightclub she owned called the "Celebrity Club'.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/apGxdL.jpg https://rwsoiree.com/les-mccann-ltd/ It was located on Sunset Boulevard and Doheny Drive, .....at 9103 Sunset to be exact. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...921/LUIWh9.jpg eBay Here's a glamour portrait of Pat Collins 'The Hip Hypnotist'. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/4VEEhd.jpg http://articles.latimes.com/1997-06-..._1_pat-collins In 1966, she even appeared in an episode of 'The Lucy Show'. I would have only been 6 years old!) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...924/jHVJdt.jpg CLICK HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRgboNPk7Ow :previous: That's Lucy slumped over in the middle. Thanks Ethereal for the Pat Collins info --
In the late 70's, I lived on Olive Drive, south of Sunset and the Comedy Store, north of Santa Monica Bvd and Barney's Beanery. |
I lived on Hancock between Sunset (where Holloway meets Sunset) and Santa Monica Blvd. in the 1980s.
I'm glad you brought up Pat Collins Blaster, what an interesting character she was! |
The other mainstay of the Strip during that era was Skip E. Lowe at the Continental Hyatt House, next door to the Comedy Store. (Martin Short's Jiminy Glick character is largely based on the Skipster.)
