West-Way Super Service was at 1535 N Western; the Standard station at the nec of Wilshire & Coronado replaced one of Effie Neustadt's many houses in 1935 (see 2525 Wilshire Boulevard). The vine-covered house next door was another of Effie's houses--and some of it still stands. See that story here: 2515 Wilshire Boulevard |

This "mysterious" image may far removed from LA but maybe not. The accompanying text speaks for itself. Quote:

John Smith Lampman was born in New York in 1853, his wife Sarepta (Rose) in Wisconsin in 1859 and son Claude in Minnesota in 1888. John and Serepta were married in 1873. Before coming to California, John Lampman was a policeman in Minnesota. Mr. Lampman was a salesman in a bakery in 1920, his wife, Sarepta, was a nurse for a private family and the son Claude was a motion picture actor. Claude appeared in one movie, apparently, "A Siren of the Jungle" a short film produced in 1916. He may have gone on to work as a costumer in the motion picture industry. They had four other children, Frank, Myrtle, Clara and Ida, all born before Claude. John Lampman is listed in the Santa Monica Voter registration in 1922 as being employed as a watchman. By 1930 his wife is listed as Rose in the census, but since she was born in the same year in the same state, it appears that she just changed her name to Rose from Sarepta ( No wonder) She died in 1921 and John Lampman died in 1935. Both are buried in Forest Lawn, Glendale. There are pictures of both John and Rose on Ancestry.com. The picture of John was taken when he was a policeman, wearing his uniform and badge. I have no explantation of the "85" on the mailbox, maybe that can be someone else's mystery. |

http://web.csulb.edu/~odinthor/socal8.html The owner of the photo (a family descendant) contacted me a medium number of years ago with the photo, and essentially said that he'd be delighted if I'd be delighted to add the pic to my site. Well, I was delighted, and so he was delighted. And we all lived happily ever after. |

From what I can tell, a driving school is using the parking lot of this May Co. (Eastland Center in West Covina) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/0KVVXj.jpg found in an old file of mine Anyone know what the uniquely shaped building with the lattice-type roof is (in the far distance) I'm off until Wednesday afternoon. Have fun everyone! _ |

That photo is on flickr with the subtitle "Car club setting up early in morning for car show in 1962". I believe that the same account, A Box of Pictures, answers the question about "the uniquely shaped building with the lattice-type roof". It was a Huddle restaurant, seen here in 1958. It's still visible on the 1980 view at Historic Aerials, but gone by 1994. The site is now occupied by TGI Fridays. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...estCovina1.jpg flickr |
