Multiple images of an unusual log house once at 1701 West Adams (the northwest corner of Normandie). I'm not clear on whether Edwin H. Lamme built it, but he did live there in 1900. For a long time I thought it was a modest house, but the second shot reveals its true size. Lamme was a lawyer who arrived on West Adams sometime after 1897 via Indianapolis, Alhambra, and the Westminster Hotel downtown; by 1910 he was living in San Diego.

re: the looking down at Cresent Hgts, Google street view at 1618 Marly Dr seems the most likely position. There's the partially blocked view, a lonely street lamp squeezed along the curb and corresponding telephone wires above.

On this thread we've seen the Ostrich Farm, Lion Farm, and Pigeon Farm, but there are at least two similar places that we haven't covered. One of these is Monkey Island, which was somewhere in the Cahuenga Pass, though no one seems to know just where. It may have been North of Barham on the Universal side of the hill, or on the other side, near where Hanna-Barbera later rose (as suggested by the 3300 Cahuenga address), or maybe a bit further south on the 101, near where Hillpark Drive is now. I know a man who used to go there with his parents long ago, and will try to find out from him. Meanwhile, here are some images.

It's funny you said this G_W. I noticed the exact same thing when I was looking for Marlay Drive...I was like "what in the heck is Hollywood Boulevard doing winding around in the hills?"

All these years researching L.A. and I have never heard of this Monkey Island. I mean...it even had that gigantic neon sign!!

I've always been a bit 'ho-hum' about the Ostrich, Pigeon, and Alligators Farms but this Monkey Island is a different story.
It sounds so cool. So a moat keeps them on the island? Can't monkeys swim?

Yeah, I noticed that too a few months ago while doing my Laurel Canyon explorations; I think I mentioned something about it here. As part of all that I had been researching road construction around there, and found an L.A. Times article that talked about the Hollywood Blvd. extension, which of course happened in conjunction with new home developments - late 30's or early 40's, I think.

I drove the Hollywood Blvd. section once, and was amazed that it just went on and on. It's very narrow and twisty, and goes quite a ways through the hills, finally ending at Sunset Plaza Drive (which I think was extended up to Appian Way at about the same time as the Hollywood Blvd. construction).

Temple Israel of Hollywood, 1948 and 2011. Discovering that Hollywood Boulevard extended west of Laurel Canyon reminded me again of the known but quiet part of the street between the Canyon and La Brea. I know we've seen the church nearby that actor Donald Crisp nearly drove his Cadillac into (check it out here), but here's another religious edifice worth a look.

Thinking about how much effort is being put into adding to the light rail lines now in 2012, citizens at the time realized how much they would regret removing what they had then. Caption at LAPL says, "Folks from San Fernando park a covered wagon outside City Hall as a way to express to the city fathers that this is the sort of transportation they'll need if the Pacific Electric is permitted to abandon its major interurban trolley sytem. Marion Parker was abducted from Mount Vernon school at 4066 West 17th Street in 1927, around the time of the black & white shot at top. I'm not so naïve as to think that the building
inspired by George Washington's house, later painted white, wouldn't also be covered by graffiti if it were still standing, but who could blame even grown-ups for covering the current
incarnation with it? Apparently tags are a major problem for what is now the Johnnie Cochran Middle School at 4066 Johnny Cochran Vista. One site posits that the exterior of the
school was changed for maintenance reasons, but it looks like a whole new building to me. Anyway, while the new school is uninspiring architecturally (to put it mildly), at least the
entablature of the old school was saved and rests in the front yard.

I couldn't remember the Marion Parker case so I googled her name. Oh boy, I'm surprised I didn't remember this murder because it was exceptionally brutal.

And now this brings me to the next point. They may well be parked outside the west side of City Hall facing north now, away from the Times building, BUT that is NOT City Hall in the photo on the right as I originally thought. After all, I was searching on the Keyword "City Hall" Due to its position, it has to be the old State Building on the west side of Spring Street. Hadn't seen that many pix of the outside of State Building so Found this at LAPL, looking North also, but taken from where the new PAB now is (police admin bldg).

Looks like from this shot, the reason the foundation is still there is that they are still actively using the parking garage under it. Note the two cars going going down in curved driveway in this shot.

The only 'White Log' something I know of is the White Log Coffee Shop located at 1061 South Hill Street. This image is dated 1939.

Notice the font is the same in G_W's photo and the 1939 photo (small sign above Griddle Cakes), but the old police station was located quite some distance from the coffee shop on South Hill (and I believe the arrow in G_W's photo is pointing in the wrong direction).

My question is....was there more than one White Log Coffee Shop?

Just posted on the On Bunker Hill time travel blog, the first in a series of circa 1954 vintage L.A. restaurant photos from the archives of 3-D photographer George Mann. This time, it's a virtual trip out to Malibu to view the famous seal-themed neon at Las Flores Cafe and some lost taverns, then back home via the Googie Penguin coffee shop as you've never seen it before. Plus some of the wild, hand-drawn signs which sat above the 3-D viewing machines in local restaurant lobbies. Hope you'll swing by and have a look.

The Ems is not new to us here, of course.... while I can't find the post (the "search" feature here objects to too-short words), it seems to me we were once speculating as to the origins of the name "Ems," ruling out "Emergency Medical Services." Anyway, as I am rereading my favorite book on Paris--Seven Ages of Paris, for me, the definitive book on that city in the way that Reyner Banham's Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies is for L.A.--something caught my eye. During a chapter discussing the buildup of Franco-Prussian tensions ca. 1870, the name of the German spa town Bad Ems is mentioned... hmmm. Could this be the origin of the name of Bunker Hill's Ems?

What I believe you are looking at is the SE corner of 1st Street and Hill. Under his butt is the intersection. This lot is currently empty and is waiting for the next Federal Courts building. The building (looks like a set of 3) just to the right of the end of the flag pole is where I am typing this from. The actor is hanging from whatever building used to be where the Stanley Mosk Courthouse currently stands.
