Multiple images of an unusual log house once at 1701 West Adams (the northwest corner of Normandie). I'm not clear on whether Edwin H. Lamme built it, but he did live there in 1900. For a long time I thought it was a modest house, but the second shot reveals its true size. Lamme was a lawyer who arrived on West Adams sometime after 1897 via Indianapolis, Alhambra, and the Westminster Hotel downtown; by 1910 he was living in San Diego.

This looks like a Montgomery Clift type of accident waiting to happen.

The extremely noirish 'Garden of Allah' is located northwest of the two large apartment buildings.
I've tried to locate it in this snapshot but I haven't had any luck....perhaps I need better glasses.

The same streetlamp base is used at least as far east in the Hollywood Hills as Rockledge Road... I'm not sure why the one in e_r's vintage shot has that odd small globe as opposed to the common urn shape.... Anyway, I didn't know that Mayor Bowron lived in the Hills at 2158 Rockledge:

Nice house. I also wasn't aware that our old pal Mickey campaigned for him when he was facing a recall in 1950. This isn't his new bulletproof Fleetwood, but rather, according to the Times, the one that was perforated by gunfire in front of Sherry's the year before:

In poking around the Hollywood Hills, I discovered something I never knew before: that Hollywood Boulevard continues west past Laurel Canyon, as far as Sunset Plaza Drive above the Strip....

And speaking of Wilton Place, here's a shot I never ran across when we were looking into the kidnapping and murder of Marion Parker:

On this thread we've seen the Ostrich Farm, Lion Farm, and Pigeon Farm, but there are at least two similar places that we haven't covered. One of these is Monkey Island, which was somewhere in the Cahuenga Pass, though no one seems to know just where. It may have been North of Barham on the Universal side of the hill, or on the other side, near where Hanna-Barbera later rose (as suggested by the 3300 Cahuenga address), or maybe a bit further south on the 101, near where Hillpark Drive is now. I know a man who used to go there with his parents long ago, and will try to find out from him. Meanwhile, here are some images.

It's funny you said this G_W. I noticed the exact same thing when I was looking for Marlay Drive...I was like "what in the heck is Hollywood Boulevard doing winding around in the hills?"

All these years researching L.A. and I have never heard of this Monkey Island. I mean...it even had that gigantic neon sign!!

I've always been a bit 'ho-hum' about the Ostrich, Pigeon, and Alligators Farms but this Monkey Island is a different story.
It sounds so cool. So a moat keeps them on the island? Can't monkeys swim?

Yeah, I noticed that too a few months ago while doing my Laurel Canyon explorations; I think I mentioned something about it here. As part of all that I had been researching road construction around there, and found an L.A. Times article that talked about the Hollywood Blvd. extension, which of course happened in conjunction with new home developments - late 30's or early 40's, I think.

I drove the Hollywood Blvd. section once, and was amazed that it just went on and on. It's very narrow and twisty, and goes quite a ways through the hills, finally ending at Sunset Plaza Drive (which I think was extended up to Appian Way at about the same time as the Hollywood Blvd. construction).

Discovering that Hollywood Boulevard extended west of Laurel Canyon reminded me again of the known but quiet part of the street between the Canyon and La Brea. Protest against removal of trolley system in L.A.

I am practicing searching LAPL and posting photos from the web. Hope to also include better links to my LA trip from a week ago if this works. Thinking about how much effort is being put into adding to the light rail lines now in 2012, citizens at the time realized how much they would regret removing what they had then. Caption at LAPL says, "Folks from San Fernando park a covered wagon outside City Hall as a way to express to the city fathers that this is the sort of transportation they'll need if the Pacific Electric is permitted to abandon its major interurban trolley sytem. Riding the wagon are William A. Trow, J. Win Austin and Lee Warburton. Photo dated: March 17, 1949. "
BTW, I KNOW this photo is backward not only because of the letting but there is no way to line up the Times Building with City Hall from this angle. Anyone know how to get this turned around or tell the LAPL they have it backward?

Marion Parker was abducted from Mount Vernon school at 4066 West 17th Street in 1927, around the time of the black & white shot at top. I'm not so naïve as to think that the building
inspired by George Washington's house, later painted white, wouldn't also be covered by graffiti if it were still standing, but who could blame even grown-ups for covering the current
incarnation with it? Apparently tags are a major problem for what is now the Johnnie Cochran Middle School at 4066 Johnny Cochran Vista. One site posits that the exterior of the
school was changed for maintenance reasons, but it looks like a whole new building to me. Anyway, while the new school is uninspiring architecturally (to put it mildly), at least the
entablature of the old school was saved and rests in the front yard.

Speaking of police stations...

Here's a great noirish shot of the doorway of University Division, once at at 809 West Jefferson. The LAPL's caption: "At 12:01 a.m. today, Lt. Ronald Williamson locks up old University Division Police Station.... The Police Department transferred the division operations to a new station located at Denker and Santa Barbara Avenues. Photo dated: February 15, 1962." Here's a 1936 view of the station:

The 1962 replacement described in the LAPL caption above:

Perhaps not quite as disappointing a replacement as that of Mount Vernon school, but the Denny's now on the site of the old station does add insult to injury....

And now this brings me to the next point. They may well be parked outside the west side of City Hall facing north now, away from the Times building, BUT that is NOT City Hall in the photo on the right as I originally thought. After all, I was searching on the Keyword "City Hall" Due to its position, it has to be the old State Building on the west side of Spring Street. Hadn't seen that many pix of the outside of State Building so Found this at LAPL, looking North also, but taken from where the new PAB now is (police admin bldg).

Photo dated 1981. I remember this incarnation. Or was it once called Dave's in the late '70s? I think I have an old
photo of it somewhere...will try to dig it out.

There were a number of White Log Taverns in L.A. in the '30s--not sure how long the chain lasted.

From the 1936 LACD under "WHITE":
http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/4605/1936wlog.jpg

1939:
http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/6043/1938wloga.jpg

I looked to see if perhaps any of the other locations might have somehow survived (I mean, if one is still downtown...), but didn't see any...

Interestingly, the White Log chain was statewide... a snippet from http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/:

"In 1930... Kenneth [Bemis] started a new restaurant chain in California called 'The White Log Taverns,' and just before opening his seventh restaurant in Berkeley, California.... As the chain developed to seventy-two units, within the next seven years, from the West Coast to Washington, D.C.,...."

The Ems is not new to us here, of course.... while I can't find the post (the "search" feature here objects to too-short words), it seems to me we were once speculating as to the origins of the name "Ems," ruling out "Emergency Medical Services." Anyway, as I am rereading my favorite book on Paris--Seven Ages of Paris, for me, the definitive book on that city in the way that Reyner Banham's Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies is for L.A.--something caught my eye. During a chapter discussing the buildup of Franco-Prussian tensions ca. 1870, the name of the German spa town Bad Ems is mentioned... hmmm. Could this be the origin of the name of Bunker Hill's Ems?

What I believe you are looking at is the SE corner of 1st Street and Hill. Under his butt is the intersection. This lot is currently empty and is waiting for the next Federal Courts building. Below: The Vendome Hotel.
I'm not sure of the street address for this one. Notice the archaic telephone booth.

Also why are there windows in what looks like a retaining wall?
They're to the right of The Vendome in the photo.

Hmmm...intriguing...why The EMS and not.....say.... The ELMS?
Anyone know what EMS stand for?

G_W, your German spa town Bad Ems is a good idea. Do we know who the architect was...perhaps he was German?

Well, I don't know why we've never run across this before, but forget "Bad Ems" (although I suppose the owner's origins could have been in that German town). I just found this:

It's a caption from Arcadia Publishing's Historic Hotels Of Los Angeles and Hollywood, in its Images of America series....

I have some requests concerning a few buildings.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7227/7...2cfab7d0_b.jpg

This building is on San Vicente and 26th Street, on the boarder Santa Monica and Brentwood.

This building is on Montana and 26th Street on the Boarder of Santa Monica and Brentwood.

I was wondering if anyone could get historic photos of these two buildings. I live in this area, and have always wondered about the history behind these two buildings. Also, if anyone could get pictures of 24th Street between San Vicente and Montana, I would be very appreciative. I live in that area of that street, and have always wondered what it looked like so long ago. Thanks!
