It looks more lively, but I've still heard things that make me fear visiting Eritrea about as much as North Korea.

Looks much more modern and civilized then expected and the old cars are nice. The Fiat building is featured in a book called "1001 buildings you must see before you die".

A great look into an isolated city/country rarely seen in the West, i have to agree the city does seem to be well ordered and has much more colonial architecture remaining than i would have thought. It also seems like at least from the prospective provided to tourists that the city embraces it's Italian character which i wasn't expecting at all in Eritrea.

Great thread. Interesting to see how the Italian culture influenced that part of the world.

I remember when I first saw this thread my knowledge of Eritrea was of a bit of its war of independence & its international isolation. However after looking back on its history if you go back to the 1980s Eritrea was something of a cause celeb in the west and now it is in a state of international isolation with the government holding a siege mentality not just with the west but its neighbors as well ... The case of the nation & its beautiful capitol city should be looked at more closely.
