I wanted to check to see if this building survived but I don't believe there is a Friend Avenue in today's West Hollywood. (Google Maps turns up nothing). Perhaps the name of the street was changed, like Prospect Avenue becoming Hollywood Boulevard.

The current streets from Gardner to Fairfax are:

Gardner Street
Sierra Bonita Avenue
Curson Avenue
Stanley Avenue
Spaulding Avenue
Genesee Avenue
Ogden Drive
Orange Grove Avenue
Fairfax Avenue

So it looks like Friend Avenue became Ogden Drive, but there's no number 608.

e_r, you asked about the Milk Diet Sanitarium a couple of months back in post #18220. I don't remember anyone digging up more info, but I may be wrong.

1915 LA City Directory @ Fold3.com

Most north-south streets jog at that stretch of Santa Monica; north of Santa Monica Blvd, 1/2 block west of Stanley is Spaulding, and the next street west is Genesee.
I drove the Googlemobile around a bit but didn't find the house. The street numbering may have changed too.

HossC, you helped solve a little mystery when you posted this photograph of the Citizens National Bank-Wilmington Branch at 200 E. Anaheim.

Can anyone tell me where this humongous arrow was located??

Thanks to HossC, I now know the arrow was probably a temporary display.
It might have been at this location only for a few days which is why no one could pinpoint the location.

I guess I need to take another ride in the google-mobile and check it out.

.In 1879, the company moved to San Francisco, where, as the Byron Jackson Machine Works, it manufactured prototypes of both deep-well turbine and submersible pumps. The growing business had one major setback in 1906, when San Francisco's great earthquake and fire destroyed the plant, but Jackson rebuilt his factory, and before his retirement in 1913, he helped design and engineer a new fire prevention and protection system for San Francisco. The system included the first use of fire trucks and fire boats equipped with efficient, high-pressure centrifugal pumps.

Here's a fuller view--apparently it's from the 1921 Max Linder silent Seven Years Bad Luck. I haven't seen the whole film, but have been told that an even fuller view reveals mountains in the background, which goes with the Pasa-/Altadena location cited. (I really knew nothing about Linder, who was popular in France but felt he bombed in the US. His end was noirish: According to silentsaregolden.com, "He made a couple more insignificant films in Europe, then declared that he wasn't funny anymore and entered into a suicide pact with his young wife in 1925 leaving an infant child."

You guys aren't gonna believe it, but I think I found it (I still can't really believe it myself). When I was young, me and my dad would go driving all over Pasadena and LA in general just to explore, which was a big part of how I got acquainted with LA architecture. There was this big mansion on Palm Street in Altadena that caught our eyes enough to go back and check it out several times. I couldn't remember exactly what it looked like, but the mystery house reminded me of it, so it made me want to pull up Google Street View just to see it again. Here's what I found:

http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/...pscbc04531.jpgGSV

Location is 1366 E. Palm Street in Altadena. It appears to be the same shape and the ornament around the front entrance looks to be the same as well. Of course, the windows on either side of the entrance are completely different - I figured that the still from the movie shows the rear facade of the house. Did a little more research and found that the house was also used on an episode "Knots Landing." That took me to a page that had a rear view of the house as it appeared in the episode. Looks to be same facade shown in the still from the movie:

The site also has a screen shot of the Google aerial view, which I think pretty much solves the mystery of the mystery house:

:previous: Oh my, what a wonderful discovery Tetsu! I knew you could do it. ;)
I was beginning to wonder if we'd ever locate GW's 'Seven Years Bad Luck' mansion.

....quite surprised it was used in an episode of Lorimar's 'Knots Landing'. (my old company)

This is a very interesting detail Graybeard.
Do you think it's possible the giant arrow was placed there for the movie production?

Great find, Tetsu. I went to check Historic Aerials, and it looks like the original grounds with the large lawn survived into the '50s. I'm afraid I couldn't make this 1954 image any clearer. By the '70s there were other houses in what had been the grounds, and the gardens were significantly reduced in size.

GW recently posted a couple of nice pieces of artwork from old City Directories. Here's one that I liked in the 1909 CD. At the time, the Aristo Engraving Company was in the Citizens National Bank Building, which ties in neatly with my posts of a couple of days ago.

Here's a similar postcard with a caption which includes the address of 501 East Ocean Boulevard. It's taken from a book called 'Long Beach Art Deco' by John W. Thomas, Suzanne Tarbell Cooper and J. Christopher Launi.

That address would've been right opposite the eastern end of the Rainbow Pier. The picture below dates from 1946.

I didn't find a demolition date, so I'm wondering whether it's worth digging out my copy of 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World' again to see if it appears in the chase at the end.
