Just saw something on Twitter from the ESB Twitter account that their Halo lights will be shut down for the next few months. And that the 102nd floor observatory will be enveloped in a cocoon. I tried to find news about this on Google and didn't see anything. Does anyone know anything about this development with the ESB ??

If you go back 2 pages, to Page 69, you will see some posts about the 102nd Floor Observatory being upgraded and changed. :)

Navillus Contracting advances work in Empire State Building’s reimaging project

January 22, 2019

Quote:

Navillus Contracting, a New York City-based union construction company, is advancing multiple assignments as part of the Empire State Building’s fully reimagined observatory project, covering 75,000 s/f throughout.

Empire State Realty Trust, owner and manager of the Empire State Building, is overseeing the upgrade of the property. While this project is underway, the 86th floor observatory remains open with uninterrupted visitor traffic.

In August, Navillus completed the initial phase of its assignment with the opening of the Empire State Building’s new entrance at 20 West 34th St., which includes a detailed mosaic mural. The company is presently advancing a new phase of work focused on general trades and finishing carpentry work on other projects throughout the landmark.

Quote:

“Navillus takes pride in adding specialized value to many of New York City’s most beloved landmarks,” said Navillus president and founder Donal O’Sullivan. “The newly expanded entrance to the Empire State Building is facilitating the seamless flow of vast numbers of tenants and visitors in and out of this iconic structure.”

The enhanced entryway is dedicated to accommodating the 4.2 million guests visiting the building’s famed Observatory each year.

Skanska is serving as construction manager for the ReBuilding project, with Corgan Associates Architects providing architecture services.

The ESB Twitter page said that they said the 102 observatory would have its lights off or closed until June 2019.

The skyscraper-cosplayer in me is kinda cringing at that Empire State Building headdress, it just looks awkward and top heavy.

Not a proposal, but a vision, east 34th.

having materialized as a result of economic growth, new york city’s skyline has become one of the most recognizable in the world, where skyscrapers rise tall and en masse,’ explains MAD architects. ‘located adjacent to the ’empire state building’ — which held the title of the world’s tallest building for almost 40 years — ‘east 34th’ is planted like a seed, sprouting within the grid, rising with a soft, undulating surface that suggests a more organic, living architecture.’

This is the cocoon. I noticed that they started installing 4 weeks ago. i tried to find out in news with the keyword ''102 observatory renovation'' or ''cocoon Empire State'' but it was worthless, even in the ig page of ESB they seem to be witholding that information until it is finished but finally found why the cocoon was there. i really thought they were expanding the deck but it seems because of the landmark status the shape cant be altered so basically they removed the mooring points for the airship and increasing the size of the windows so they are floor to ceiling.
here you go a picture of the cocoon. by me

Will the 86th floor get floor to ceiling glass as well.

I think in the next 20 years or so, when ESB is literally surrounded by 1000ft+ buildings a debate will be had to bring down the top of the building and rebuild the top 200-300ft taller. Obviously with much of what was taken down as possible.

When the Twin Towers were finished in 1972, the ESB owners considered it.

I would love them to do this with the Chrysler as well....heck why not even Top Of The Rock??!!

These two beyond iconic buildings don't deserve to be overshadowed by mostly, lets be honest, inferior buildings.

* Yeh yeh I know. But it's some food for thought.

Increasing their height would destroy the historical integrity.

It's historical integrity may well be threatened with many vastly inferior towers nearby.
