The Lanes & Pines seem to have been related in that they were built at the same time by the same architect/designers, but operated under different ownership. http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...belle/1959.jpg lat 5-31-59. Davidson Jack H. Macdonald and Ceejay Parsons, architects and engineers, drew up the plans for the structure and Samuel E. Hart did the design. |

Thanks for the follow-ups on the Valley Music Theater, Martin Pal.

Incidentally, a Japanese company called Mitsuoka makes a Mark II Jaguar look-alike based on the sub-compact Nissan March/Micra. Since the March/Micra is not sold in the US, the Mitsuoka Viewt probably isn't available either. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...t.jpg~original Wikipedia |

That's either a '63 or '64 Cadillac convertible behind the Jaguar. |

3-9-42 - Corporal (Corp.) (Newspaper clipping) 3-7-43 - Lieutenant (Lt.) (Bar of Music Photo) 6-27-43 2nd Lieutenant (2LT) (accident report) ...we know he "enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a private in December, 1940, (age 25) at Fort MacArthur, San Pedro, CA." Questions: Would he still have been a Corporal roughly 15 months after enlisting? On the Bar of Music photo, listed as only Lt. -- in public, whether you were a 1LT or 2LT would you just be referred to as a Lieutenant? Also, maybe he wasn't a gentleman as the newspaper clipping from NCD has him engaged to Betty Jo Lins and a year later he's writing love poems to Marjorie "Midge" Casper. |

http://militaryaviationjournal.com/2...uring-wwii.htm bombardier school was 9 months long. So the pay grades are not inconsistent. I do not know if cadets kept their existing grade or were promoted on entry. When I went through USAF OTS in 1962, you were inducted as an E-1 and immediately promoted to E-5 on entry. And yes, both 2/Lt and 1/Lt are informally referred to as "Lieutenant." Cheers, Earl |
Why don't more architects put the address on the front of their buildings :). Here are Julius shulman's photographs of 315 South Virgil Avenue. They're from "Job 943: Carl Maston, Virgil Apartment Building (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1951".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original And here are the interior pictures. The fifth image in the set is an exterior shot similar to the view above, but taken at a later date (judging by the vegetation growth). It doesn't really add anything, so I've left it out. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute Here's the 1949 building permit which shows that Carl Maston designed, built and owned the apartments. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original Online Building Records The relevant later demo/new building permits aren't available to view online, but there are several for demolition dated December 1989, and three for new construction dated 1990/91. I assume at least one of the latter is for the building which currently stands at 315 S Virgil. I can't say I'm particularly fond of it, but at least they continued to have the address on the front (it's just above the pedestrian). http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original GSV |
re: military insignias
I've been intrigued by the insignia (medals?) on the gentleman below on the right. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/ssjuud.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/tNpPh7.jpg eBay Also, where are the insignia/stripes that are usually on the sleeves? (of both gentlemen on the either end) -:previous:Yikes, that looks like a giant syringe on the wall. This souvenir photograph is from 'The Jade' lounge located at 6619 Hollywood Boulevard. As a reminder, it is the building with the mysterious boxy thingy on the roof. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/BIArSp.jpg Martin Pal http://www.skyscraperpage.com/forum/...ostcount=21278 If I remember correctly, the odd shape on the roof is one mystery that we haven't been able to solve on NLA. -a rarity! I realize we've seen it before on NLA, but here's a better look at the fascinating Henry Clive mural visible in the background of the vintage photograph. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/o2yk4b.jpg very erotic!! :previous:-note the strategically placed clam shell. Here's a Jade photograph I posted several years ago. A trio this time...a handsome military man with his parents (I think). -his father is a Robert Stack look-alike http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=18848 __ |

I've been trying to line up this exact spot on 'google street view' for a 'before' & 'after' comparison, but I haven't had much luck.

HossC would those building permits you've found to post occasionally lead to any clues if the building was remodeled or anything? |

It wasn't me who originally found the building permits, but I'll have a look. ------------------ Quote:

I looked for addresses for "VALLEY BLVD YRETTOP" and Cookies, to no avail. Perhaps this stretch of Alhambra Ave was once designated Valley Blvd.... Anyway, Bing, limited as it is, seems to provide better street views of Alhambra Avenue toward the hill and Y intersection: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4...2520PM.bmp.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K...2520PM.bmp.jpg |

I'm glad you asked that, ER... I guess William F. Sipes, who had a pottery at 4941 Valley Rd in 1942 (and lived with his wife Rena at 4945 Valley), thought the backwards spelling would catch the eyes of eastbound motorists. Perhaps Rena was "Cookie".... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U...2520PM.bmp.jpg |
lol. I thought it was an acronym.
