Two original negatives of the Capitol Records Building under construction just showed up on eBay

"1955 NEGATIVES...CAPITOL RECORDS BUILDING CONSTRUCTION,LOS ANGELES CALIF."

Take a look at this. :)

Hmm. . what is the long brick building on the left? It looks too large (for what I thought was there) Does that make sense?

It's interesting to see the house amid all the construction.

Is this really the Capitol Records Building? It looks too sleek (at first I thought it was because the awnings hadn't been installed) . . .
and I don't recognize the modern building (in the background) on the left. What gives?

RE:...Capitol Records Building photograph.

I thought the sign next to the house was for parking but it's actually a hot dog stand.

The negatives just sold for $119.50. I hope the buyer knows they've bought pictures of the International Tower under construction in the mid-60s!

Like e_r, I wondered "what the old brick building on the left" was. After a bit of searching, it turns out it was just a retaining wall between the road and the beach. Here's the best shot I've found so far, which is a detail from an undated aerial. The dark building near the center is the old house from e_r's picture.

When I lived in Long Beach I knew people who had lived in that round building.
They said it was not really comfortable because all the rooms were small and odd shaped. No rooms were squared. Furniture was difficult to place. They sold and moved to a conventional house in Bixby Knolls.

Geodesic domes were popular around here for a while. Same problems. Plus leaks.

Screen grabs from "A Life at Stake", a noirish 1954 release....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyXsU7n0OnE&t=629s

Early in the picture Keith Andes (no great actor he, think of a poor man's Skip Homeier) walks up to this place and asks for the lady of the house....

https://i1381.photobucket.com/albums...psh89atiqb.png

The maid tells him she's out back at the pool (of course, this being Hollywood there is no way to know if the front exterior and the pool area are one and the same house)....anyway, Andes goes around to the rear, where he finds....

https://i1381.photobucket.com/albums...ps9hfxokkz.png

....Angela Lansbury floating the afternoon away....

Apparently, in the 50's it's never too early for a cocktail....here we see that the pool area is enclosed, partly solid and the rest is windowed...

https://i1381.photobucket.com/albums...psu5znohp5.png

https://i1381.photobucket.com/albums...ps1b736mpc.png

Andes takes a seat, and from this angle through the glass we can see...

https://i1381.photobucket.com/albums...pswnnzglbl.png

...the Mulholland Drive Viaduct over the Hollywood Fwy., in the Cahuenga Pass.

https://i1381.photobucket.com/albums...psb7z9gyq2.png

https://i1381.photobucket.com/albums...ps4ywyhnwp.jpg
1940's

The house was (or still is) on the east side of the pass, just north of the viaduct and seems fairly low on the hillside....I think maybe in the area circled....

https://i1381.photobucket.com/albums...ps5he7jwmv.jpg

PS....Just noticed in the YouTube comments that the house has been identified as 3207 Tareco Dr.

In the 1930s, my mother lived on Cahuenga Trail. I have not been able to find that street in recent years. Could the street name have been changed to Cahuenga Park Trail at some point?

Hi, I love your page, but can't quite figure out how to work this contraption.

Just wanted to mention that regarding post #54115 the plaque on the Alexandria Hotel is for the Guv'nor's Grille restaurant. There is a brief mention in the Los Angeles Times 01 Oct 1961.

There is currently a cocktail napkin listed on eBay:

Angela Landsbury. Man, she was a babe back in the day. I've seen her in some of her earlier roles, and she really was a beautiful young woman.

Earl Boebert Apr 21, 2020 3:15 AM

If you have ever seen the Manchurian Candidate you will never look at Angela Landsbury the same way again.

Cheers,

Earl

Great film. And interestingly, Angela Lansbury was only 3 years older than Laurence Harvey, yet she plays his mother in the movie---and she was only 36 or 37 at the time of the filming, as was Anne Bancroft when she made "The Graduate." As an aside, in "The Graduate," Anne Bancroft was only 6 or 7 years older than Dustin Hoffman, yet she was cast to play the Mrs. Robinson character, who was supposed to be 20 years older than the Benjamin Braddock character (who was supposed to be 21).

Thanks so much, Snix! I was very curious about this.

The earlier plaques must have been for the predecessor(s) to The Guv'nor's Grille, and they decided to carry on the tradition.

Re:. . .'NOT the Capitol Records Building' photograph.

Hoss, thanks for figuring out that the long brick 'building' was actually a sea wall! I would have never guessed.

Here's a bit more information on the International Tower in Long Beach CA.

The tower was built by Bel Air developer, Henry Sassoon.

When the tower officially open in February 1966 it was known as the Sixes Tower.
The address at that time was 666 Ocean Boulevard (hence the Sixes name) The address was later changed to 700 E. Ocean Blvd. (good idea)

The site.

By Jan. 1964, "the bungalows of the El Mirador Hotel were being demolished for the round tower." :(

By June 7, "the circular foundation of the building was begun, seen (below) in a picture taken from the top of the Villa Riviera across the street."

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/eRA65A.jpg

"This foundation was four feet thick and one hundred thirty feet in diameter.
The structural design of the round tower was created by computer, a truly modern concept in 1964."

This image seems a bit deceiving.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/OTQu9Q.jpg

above: The inner core of the tower with the steel framing work underway. The core stands nearly 300 feet high.

I find this next part especially interesting.

"A cocktail bar and a $750,000 revolving restaurant were planned for the top of the Sixes Tower in 1965,
replacing an earlier concept for a heliport on the roof. The 5,300 square foot restaurant would seat 275 diners in tiered seats
so all would have a stellar view. It would revolve on wheels and rails and make a complete circle in one hour.
Unfortunately, the revolving restaurant never came to fruition."

I'd say it's fortunate it didn't come to fruition.

. . . It looks like one of those taco places shaped like a sombrero.

Yesterday as I was double-checking the Capitol Records Building negative (that turned out NOT to be the Capitol Records Bldg)

I happened upon this colorful image of a lovely mystery woman.

I don't know if she's a tourist or a movie starlet. Does anyone recognize her?

edit:. . .I just noticed the writing in the lower right but I can't make it out.

If you look closely, it's not a station wagon. It's a convertible with the top down. The "luggage" appears to be a somewhat large vertical sign (?) on the front of a small building beyond the car.
