oops, this was supposed to go in my previous post. 1990s. The former Music Box / Pix Theater. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/IcseDp.jpg cinematreasures jhuxid, have you ever been down in the basement?...(if there is a basement) When I was a kid a classmate's father ran a theater here in the midwest and we used to snoop around in the basement which -at the time- was full of old movie posters and lobby cards. This theater. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/VDifAz.jpg Paxton Majestic Theater Sadly, it burnt to the ground in 2007. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/3...923/rkxT7K.jpg . |

I don't remember if we have seen this photograph of Eagle Rock on NLA but I decided to post it anyway. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/qK4w5Y.jpg eaglerockhistory So. .um. . .the tracks just end at this spot near the Bailey Block (& then passengers are left to traipse through the weeds) Where was the streetcar coming from? Here's additional information. The Bailey Block sits isolated on Townsend Avenue at the end of a widened but still still dirt street. Behind us us the Eagle Road Road to Garvanza and Pasadena was small and unimproved. The old Bailey/Murfield Block still stands! https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/Lvyatd.jpg update: Tritch Hardware has taken over the building. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/MdO5At.jpg GSV Link As you can see it looks much better with a fresh coat of paint. . |

Here's a rare cabinet card from Sunbeam Studio of Chinese-American children....Dated Feb. 20, 1898. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/FbgICp.jpg eBay Thankfully there is writing on the back. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/qYGHjH.jpg hmm. . ."Puck's Children" ...Does anyone have any idea who Puck is? I looked through some old city directories and didn't find much. And if they are Pucks children why do they have different last names? Do I ask too many question? |

Mr. Jagger Mick Mr. Bowie David Mr. Lennon John So with Mr. Chen Puck, Chen is quite likely the surname. Also, Chinese names tend to have three parts, such as: Chow Yun-fat Chan Kong-sang (Jackie Chan) Lee Jun-fan (Bruce Lee) ... so it's possible that the kids' two-part names on the back of the photo are simply leaving off the surname (meaning they all share the surname of Chen). To be clear, this is all just speculation on my part... |

But I did find other photographs that we've seen on NLA in the past. Like this 1888 view of Chinatown, Los Angeles. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/GYeApD.jpg Link Holy Moly. Amazing! . |

We have covered Nat Goodwin on NLA but I don't believe we have seen his home in Santa Monica. It's a tad bit blurry. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/Ni0EAZ.jpg Currently on eBay Judging by the benches it looks like it was somewhere along the beach walk. the back https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/rgyqhm.jpg As a reminder: Goodwin owned a cafe and cabaret, "Cafe Nat Goodwin", on the private Bristol Pier in Santa Monica, California between 1913 and 1916. After he sold the business in 1916, its name was changed to the Sunset Inn. Here are a couple views of his cafe in a pervious post by Noircitydame. Quote:

Coincidentally enough, e_r, Dorsey Patton, who came to be mentioned recently in connection with the giant woman (post 60796), died in Goodwin's house: https://i.postimg.cc/NjwCBDHq/Dorsey-Goodwin.jpg LA Herald, 12/10/1906 |

More death in the Goodwin house...before Goodwin owned it: On July 30, 1903, the Times reported that "sporting man" Thomas Fitzgerald had let a contract to build a $10,000 house at Hart Avenue and Ocean Front. Times July 25, 1905: https://i.postimg.cc/NjMYgwKw/goodwinfitzdies.jpg Times July 25, 1906: https://i.postimg.cc/7hqKMwzs/goodwin10.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/KjNxJGHR/goodwinfullpic.jpg Goodwin made a number of additions, including a conservatory, to the house over the next few years. Times Feb 1, 1919...it seems Goodwin sold the SM house not long before he died himself, the death occuring not long before he was to marry for the sixth time. Note also that Hedda Hopper's husband (she was his fifth wife)--and Paul Drake's father-- makes an appearance: https://i.postimg.cc/vT26HxRd/goodwindeath1-bmp.jpg |

:previous:...Thanks for answering my question, rick m. ..I never thought about going to the library and seeing the photographs in person. Refresh my memory, noirishers. ..Have we seen Judge Silent's home on NLA? I ask because I just happened upon this amazing photograph on eBay. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/i1oRsg.jpg eBay Link Would I be correct if I said the house was located at the corner of Adams and Figueroa? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/jVDTd4.jpg LAPL / 1886-7 No mention of a judge. Thanks for the juicy information on Nat Goodwin's home, odinthor and GaylordWilshire. . |
My story on Silent's property, which of course became Chester Place:

If you have been there in recent years, I am the one responsible for much of the decor from the remodel 12 years ago. The Hieronymus Bosch wallpaper, and the Lobby lighting (I'm very proud of how that turned out) You can blame that all on me ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°) |
