These pictures look a lot like parts of the southwest side of Chicago. These are what I would call gingerbread houses, there are some of them only a block away from where I live. The first picture even has a house number that is similar to my neck of the woods in Chicago.

Southwest St. Louis and Chicago are twins, then!

The Northwest has a few neighborhoods that have this vibe as well (North Pointe, parts of Baden and Penrose, etc.).

Yeah, St. Louis has a bungalow (or gingerbread) belt like Chicago that extends into the suburbs. South County has the gingerbreads, too.

This is all the way out on the 9000 block beyond the city limits.

I miss home, too. Terribly. There are so many wonderful places in the world. But, only one St. Louis.

There's nothing like stl. The brick work there is second to none.

i'm obsessive-compulsive when it comes to examining the masonry work in cities thanks to st. louis. i think a lot of german immigrants to st. louis (who built massive swaths of the city) brought a sort of red brick gothic asthetic common in northern germany.

it's interesting that the areas of the city that were built by irish and italian immigrants seem to be less red brick intense, like the hill and dogtown (both areas have lots of tan/creme brick, etc) and some of the old "american" built inner suburbs have almost no red brick and look more like neighborhoods in say, omaha or something.

Diskojoe,I am still around. But, I do things in phases. Move from one obsession to another----and then back again.

What happened to all the Germans that built Saint Louis? Where did they go?

Where everybody else goes, the suburbs.
