I believe the long row of trees at far right is the property line....................................................................................:previous:

I just found another early photograph that I believe shows the property line (on the opposite side of the cemetery this time)

"1918 photo depicting the newly built Best Family private outdoor mausoleum, one of the first of its kind constructed in what is now commonly referred to by
us grave hunters as The Old Section."

"A Soldier of the Civil War" is engraved over the doorway.

note the straight line of trees and utility poles.....that's what I believe is the property line

I've been looking for a map that show the early boundaries of the old Tropico Cemetery, known by 'grave hunters' as the Old Section.

It would be fun to overlay it onto the current size of the Park. (that's beyond my computer abilities), but I know someone here would help me. ;)

Is there a way to find out?...does Forest Lawn have a detailed list somewhere online?

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Xs...XFI=w1366-h768

I wish AF wasn't so damn murky, because we never see the steps they start to climb, before stopping at a landing:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/qS...yis=w1366-h768

Also, this is supposed to be the view of Angels Flight, from the leads POV after they exit the car in AF:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/e5...6Zo=w1366-h768

Ha! So if I'd just watched KMD another few seconds, I might have figured it out. I need to be more thorough, or at least patient. I also didn't watch AF long enough to see them walk up the long flight of steps with the window to their left, which sells it as the utility steps along the Astoria, hell, he even talks about "that first landing" and there's three landings in the Astoria along the steps. Soooo you're absolutely correct, they park just that side of the utility stairs between the Sunshine and the Astoria.

As in, where the "C" is in Clay, basically:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/761/32...1e25574c_o.png

And then go to that first landing (the "T" in Hotel).

So then I thought to consult Indestructible Man, check it out here (this is the version on YT with the highest resolution) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wt7eedQCDQY and for our interests visit 40:24-44:15 (and don't forget 44:56-48:56 for a bunch of goings-on in the Bradbury Bldg).

Anyhow, here's Marian Carr checking out the guy Lon Chaney Jr just tossed down the steps from the top landing, near Olive (the final "a" in Astoria). There's that two-tone paint job and smooth finish, as distinct from the exposed block on the other side. (Though I'm guessing that's actually also cement, with the block "carved in.")

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/591/32...37bd9d39_o.png

Here's Chaney going at it—

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/523/32...0cdd844f_o.png

And a reverse shot that looks down to Clay, in the distance, the back of the Belmont, which fronts Hill. So Chaney grabs and raises the guy over his head at the first landing, but then throws him from down near the second landing. Nice piece of continuity error that no-one noticed (and fewer would care about, perhaps) but I love it anyway.

One can get married at 13 in New Hampshire, 14 in New York, North Carolina and Alaska. Some states require parental/court consent. Bunch more states (including Indiana) it's 15.

There's a lesson in there somewhere.

Here's another long-gone piece of the era. He's holding a hand-carved Mexican cane. They were painted in the Mexican national colors of red, white and green and you could buy them in any souvenir or junk shop in the Southwest from Texas to CA. I like to think he bought his in some joint on Olvera Street.

This elderly gentleman looks very much like British-born actor Henry Travers (Mrs. Miniver, It's a Wonderful Life) and appears to be about the right age. I wonder if he was an honorary Iowan in 1951. Although from the USC archival info for the image it seems his name may have been M.F. McMahon (82 years) and just a look-alike.

(From Perry Mason: The Case of the Spurious Sister, 1959)

No, not the :previous: location, but evocative of Kenton Court.

Interesting assemblage of wires and antennae. As this was 1925 (a few years before mid-century), antenna height was probably important for crystal set reception. Probably not many superheterodyne receivers on Kenmore Ave for a few years.

Quote:

When KFI went on the air April 16, 1922, the station was mostly an experiment to determine if anyone could hear radio voice transmissions. "Can you hear me?" Earle C. Anthony would yell into a carbon microphone from his garage transmitter location. "Yes, I can hear you," a family member would reply from a nearby house, listening to Anthony's transmission on an early, very primitive radio receiver. The station's operating frequency was not on 640 kHz in those days, but any frequency where Anthony could get the transmitter to operate.

Later, the Federal Radio Commission (prior to the Communications Act of 1934) mandated that all stations would operate on a wavelength of 360 meters (approximately 833 kHz). One station would operate on this frequency for a period of time. Then, it would go off the air so another one could use the same frequency.

The first station would invariably make the decision to continue to stay on the air after the second one had come on, causing massive interference. Later, after the establishment of the Communications Act of 1934, stations were assigned specific operating frequencies. KFI was assigned its present call letters and ended up with its 640 kHz operating frequency, a fortuitous happening, since radio signal propagation seems to be better at low end of the AM band than at the upper end.

In addition, being the first station on 640 kHz, KFI would not be required to erect a directional antenna system to protect other stations. Those that came on the air on 640 kHz following KFI would, instead, have to protect it. With its low operating frequency, its 50,000 watts of power, and its non-directional, 722-foot, single tower, antenna system, KFI's night-time signal could be heard over vast sections of the United States and various parts of the world.

From 1922 to 1926, early programming consisted of such things as reading news from a newspaper and local gossip. Broadcasting hours were very short, since Anthony was involved in many other activities, and programming sources were very limited. In other words, it was a hobby. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KFI
(The more things change, the more they stay the same - although broadcasting hours are now 24/7.)

AS Hoss and Rick have already noted we're looking north on Hope Street with Temple passing in the middle distance and the southern terminus
of the newly opened section of the Hollywood Freeway dumping traffic out onto Temple at Hope. Here's an image of the same scene looking more westerly...

https://c1.staticflickr.com/2/1477/2...1334c5c9_o.jpgEnd of the line, SB Hollywood Freeway at Hope Street, 1951

These are Sunday drivers, out for a drive and to see the newest link of the
freeway system. This particular stretch ran from Melrose (at Normandie) down
here to Hope Street at Temple. This is Sunday, November 11, 1951. At this
time we lived on Monroe Street near Melrose and Western Avenue. We did this
many times. In fact we could very well have been in this shot although I don't
see a light blue bathtub Nash.
