I've been looking for a map that show the early boundaries of the old Tropico Cemetery, known by 'grave hunters' as the Old Section.

It would be fun to overlay it onto the current size of the Park. (that's beyond my computer abilities), but I know someone here would help me. ;)

Ha! So if I'd just watched KMD another few seconds, I might have figured it out. I need to be more thorough, or at least patient. I also didn't watch AF long enough to see them walk up the long flight of steps with the window to their left, which sells it as the utility steps along the Astoria, hell, he even talks about "that first landing" and there's three landings in the Astoria along the steps. Soooo you're absolutely correct, they park just that side of the utility stairs between the Sunshine and the Astoria.

Anyhow, here's Marian Carr checking out the guy Lon Chaney Jr just tossed down the steps from the top landing, near Olive (the final "a" in Astoria). There's that two-tone paint job and smooth finish, as distinct from the exposed block on the other side. (Though I'm guessing that's actually also cement, with the block "carved in.")

And a reverse shot that looks down to Clay, in the distance, the back of the Belmont, which fronts Hill. So Chaney grabs and raises the guy over his head at the first landing, but then throws him from down near the second landing. Nice piece of continuity error that no-one noticed (and fewer would care about, perhaps) but I love it anyway.

This elderly gentleman looks very much like British-born actor Henry Travers (Mrs. Miniver, It's a Wonderful Life) and appears to be about the right age. I wonder if he was an honorary Iowan in 1951. Although from the USC archival info for the image it seems his name may have been M.F. McMahon (82 years) and just a look-alike.

Interesting assemblage of wires and antennae. As this was 1925 (a few years before mid-century), antenna height was probably important for crystal set reception. Probably not many superheterodyne receivers on Kenmore Ave for a few years.

Anthony would yell into a carbon microphone from his garage transmitter location. The station's operating frequency was not on 640 kHz in those days, but any frequency where Anthony could get the transmitter to operate. Those that came on the air on 640 kHz following KFI would, instead, have to protect it. With its low operating frequency, its 50,000 watts of power, and its non-directional, 722-foot, single tower, antenna system, KFI's night-time signal could be heard over vast sections of the United States and various parts of the world. From 1922 to 1926, early programming consisted of such things as reading news from a newspaper and local gossip. freeway system. This particular stretch ran from Melrose (at Normandie) down
here to Hope Street at Temple. This is Sunday, November 11, 1951. At this
time we lived on Monroe Street near Melrose and Western Avenue. We did this
many times. In fact we could very well have been in this shot although I don't
see a light blue bathtub Nash.
