Madison looks great! I had no idea. This has to be one of the top two or three Madisons in the country.

Love small cities like this. So many great historic buildings (though it looks like the Eagles building had a big problem). Wonderful tour ColDay, thanks.

I believe it was one of the first Main Street programs in the nation.

I was expecting abandoned storefront and lots of parking lots -- throw in a crumbled down factory or two. But no.

This places is LOVELY! So great to see such a beautifully well-preserved historic town. Why have I never heard of this place? Seems like a cute weekend getaway destination.

color me surprised as well. not what i was expecting at all.

and to think, not all that long ago hundreds of small towns littered across the eastern part of the nation looked like this.

thank god we still have madison at the very least to remind us of what our nation lost.

Nice pictures! The Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate architecture is wonderful.

I kind of heard about this town, but had to look up where it was. It doesn't surprise me that it's on the Ohio River. The architecture seems to reflect a prosperous time when transportation was done on water.

I had no idea where this was, either. I figured it was in the far southern end of the state, maybe a Louisville exurb, but it looks like it's quite a ways up the river. Sure, these cities on the river used to be fairly well-off, but even by those standards Madison is a surprise. I wonder what the economy is based on the city, today? Is it, in fact, a Lousville commuter exurb?

^ the Clifty Creek coal plant is right up the river, so that is probably a big part of the economy.

For some reason, Madison reminds me of New Hope, PA and Lamberville, NJ, just bigger.

Not really. It's pretty self-sustaining.

I'll echo other people, never heard of Madison before and I've been to Indiana a lot (visiting family in Gary). I've never seen anything like that in Indiana, thanks for the thread.
