It certainly is (though we don't need to post the same photo 3 times in a row to see it)...

^^^ Yes, that was a bit redundant.

:previous: Mild conditions.

Remember, NYC almost always gets less than the burbs. (North and west and sometimes east too.)

We got 18 inch's.

World Trade Weekly: Lunch Break Edition

Lunchtime at the World Trade Center site is a colorful sight even on an overcast and foggy day. Hundreds of construction workers in bright yellow and orange safety vests pour into neighborhood delis and pizza joints, but most crowd into the tiny local gourmet food store, the Amish Market. There, burly gents in hard hats hum to the Nat King Cole soundtrack while choosing prosciutto over pastrami. Make no mistake, these guys know food.

Back at the site, just two bays of the Deutsche Bank remain to tear down, a row of windows appeared on the northwest corner of One World Trade, and the steel mullions for a glass curtain wall began to wrap their way around Snøhetta‘s Museum Pavilion.

A very exciting time to witness during the memorial build process, one of the best. I love how this is shaping, spring will look good.

They expect cladding of the Pavilion to begin and be completed by Sept 11th of this year, so it will be the 3rd building at the WTC site to take shape visibly.

There probably won't be public access.

Milestones Keep WTC Transportation Hub on Track
Progress continues through the winter

February 3, 2011

Quote:

The three new towers are not the only construction sites making good progress in the World Trade Center (WTC) east bathtub. The WTC Transportation Hub, designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, also has reached several milestones this winter, with more than 2,800 tons of permanent steel now erected in the station.

The Port Authority reports that construction of the iconic structure’s signature sweeping arches had made major progress -- on their way to forming the Hub’s mezzanine level. Erection of the north, south, and center span arches also has been completed. Other recent progress includes installation of the Hub’s northwest “supercolumn,” which is a key pillar for providing the structure’s distinctive openness.

Meanwhile, construction of the East Box Girder continues and welding is commencing. The massive steel girder is essentially an underground bridge to permanently support the 1 train subway box in place while allowing commuters to travel below it. It will link the main Transit Hall area with the east-west connector -- serving as part of the future pedestrian concourse that will stretch as far west as the World Financial Center, and as far east as the Fulton Street Transit Center’s William Street entrances.

The WTC Transportation Hub will restore and enhance the PATH station that existed prior to September 11, 2001. It has been designed to accommodate 250,000 pedestrians per day. The existing temporary PATH station, with access at Vesey Street and West Broadway, accommodates approximately 50,000 pedestrians per day.

When are they going to begin work on the primary Calatrava-designed transit hub, the one visible from street level? I'm worried about it because I know the price tag has scared politicians, and after seeing New Jersey pull the plug on the Hudson river NJTransit tunnel, I won't feel comfortable about this hub until it's finally complete.

Nice to see the window framing going up on the museum.

They've been working on that for a long time already. It's the construction between towers 2 and 3. That in itself is not actually the transit hub (which is below the memorial), but it is the centerpiece of it.

Yes, I know...that's exactly why I made the distinction. It's the centerpiece I'm most interested in. When are they scheduled to begin work on that section?

This is a good question. After seeing the sublevel plans for the whole site posted recently, I understand the relationship of the different transportation hub areas a lot better, and I realize that most of the essential infrastructure is actually underneath the WTC memorial. But I also wondered why there was not more visible work on the prominent part of the hub that everyone wants to see, the one between towers 2 and 3. This was especially surprising because there has been so much visible work recently on the footings of towers 2 and 3, whereas the future hub entrance area seems practically untouched.

Is it because the hub entrance area requires the lower levels of towers 2 and 3 to be completed in order to support it on the northern and southern sides? Is it too crowded down there to work on all three simultaneously? Or is this a money issue as Don098 suggested?

They are working in that section. It will reach street level summer of next year. You can read the quarterly reports for more specifics.
