Las Vegas Blows!

...And I mean "blows!" Talk about some bone-chillingly frigid wind in 90 degree heat!

Nice, crisp shots!

You stay at Mandalay Bay? I've heard the room rates have fallen through the floor and that they may close down as a result of the attack.

I'm really curious as to why the redevelopment of the south end of downtown never restarted after the Great Recession. Not exactly complaining that it didn't become a land of faceless condo buildings, but it could afford some slightly more substantial buildings along the roads.

FREKI Oct 5, 2019 5:24 AM

Great ones mate!

JMKeynes Oct 5, 2019 12:22 PM

Great shots, but that place looks ridiculous.

Phil McAvity Oct 5, 2019 9:45 PM

Nice pics

I visited Vegas twice in the late nineties and man has it exploded since then, back then there were probably a quarter of the number of hotel rooms

The thing i've never understood about Vegas though are the lack of office buildings because don't the 2 million+ residents need suits like the rest of us? I live in Victoria BC which has less than 1/6th the population of Las Vegas yet the two cities seem to have about the same amount of office space

RumbleFish Oct 6, 2019 1:53 AM

A low percentage of the population has a traditional office job. I heard recently that 70% of the workforce works on the strip. Not sure how accurate that number is though.

EastSideHBG Oct 6, 2019 3:24 PM

Very cool, and appreciate the pics of the scenery ;) LV can get some hate but to me it's an interesting place.

Yes, obviously most of the residents work in the hotels and casinos, my point was, don't they need doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc.... like everyone else?

LMich Oct 6, 2019 8:38 PM

I'm not so sure what it is you're not getting, exactly. These places exists, and they exist all over the city. Obviously, the local economy has not lended it self to needing a particularly large amount of office space, or at least not consolidated in a few locations. It doesn't seem that strange, at all. It has a unique local economy which doesn't seem to need huge office buildings. It does not seem strange given the unique nature of Las Vegas.

mousquet Oct 6, 2019 11:09 PM

^ I don't know why you'd have any particular sympathy for this town. Really, gambling is no healthy occupation or economy.
It's always the most harshly affected city in the US whenever any economic turmoil would occur.
See what happened to them in 2008. It was like everything around them suddenly collapsed, and it was heartbreaking to see locals fired from their own homes in reports.
And the next depression may be even worse...

Bon, people of the world go over there to lose their money. It's true that it may be fun (I lost some money over there, myself, lol), but I agree with Phil anyway.
They need a much more diverse economy.

Are you looking at metro numbers, or City of Las Vegas numbers? Most of "Las Vegas" isn't in Las Vegas.

dc_denizen Oct 7, 2019 1:21 AM

Vegas would be a cool city if they recladded all the ludicrous buildings to a more modern format, the nice progressive towers look completely alien and out of place next to giant castle and pyramid and nyc facsimile kids playground casino monstrosities.

Vegas is supposed to look ludicrous and disorderly. Part of the charm is having a replica of the Eiffel Tower or a pyramid next to a glass tower. Vegas doesn’t need urban blandness. It’s not a typical city and shouldn’t look like one.

LV is awesome, no kidding, definitely better than Hollywood. I stayed at Mandalay Bay in early 2011 with some colleagues, well not officially cuz I actually stayed at a motel across the street.

White Castle wasn't on Fremont St. when I was there in 2011.

harryc Oct 8, 2019 1:18 AM

I must visit some day - for the people watching.

UPP Oct 9, 2019 4:28 PM

Man. I stayed at Circus Circus in the early 90's. Back then it was a sizable casino on the strip. In one of those photos, it is absolutely dwarfed by new developments coming up around it.

Some interesting shots for sure.

Vegas is one of those guilty pleasures that should be experienced.

rgarri4 Oct 9, 2019 4:37 PM

Man are they ever going to do something with the failed Fontainebleau Casino? Sad that the tallest building in Vegas is an unfinished abandoned construction site.

Nightsky Oct 15, 2019 1:19 PM

Cool pics! LV looks tasteless and tacky, just like it should do.

Have been to Macau, Asia's LV (that also has a Portugese old town) but would like to see the "original" in real life one day.

Not that I've been to Macau, but from what I've heard, there's really no drinking or shows/entertainment there like in Vegas; people go there specifically to gamble. Is that true?
