:previous: Beat me to it. The Golden Gate is my favorite and in a class all by itsself.

I have to say, that I agree with that. |
While the Golden Gate is very famous, I would say that the Mackinaw Bridge gives it a run for its money.

The Mackinaw Bridge connects the upper and lower peninsulas of the state of Michigan. Mackinaw City and St. Ignace, the two cities at each end of the bridge are not exactly teeming metropolii! I do have to say that the Golden Gate's location is more spectacular. |
^ The bridge, though pronounced Mackinaw, is spelled with a "c": Mackinac. In this region of Michigan, only Mackinaw City is spelled with a "w". All other Mackinacs are spelled with the French "c" (and pronounced "aw"). Just a friendly fyi. :)
The Mackinac Bridge is also my favorite, and it's pretty much by bias and childhood fascination. Here's some pics of the bridge from a trip I took last summer. This side is Lake Huron, but the other side of the bridge is Lake Michigan. The south shore of the Upper Peninsula is on the right. http://downtownmotown.8k.com/North/2...-04_060152.jpg http://downtownmotown.8k.com/North/2...-04_060156.jpg http://downtownmotown.8k.com/North/2...-04_060189.jpg The walk across is 5 miles, so Labor Day is the only day the span is open to do so. http://downtownmotown.8k.com/North/2...-04_060119.jpg You can walk on the steel roadway and see the water below. http://downtownmotown.8k.com/North/2...-04_060123.jpg http://downtownmotown.8k.com/North/2...-04_060128.jpg http://downtownmotown.8k.com/North/2...-04_060132.jpg Approaching the summit. http://downtownmotown.8k.com/North/2...-04_060134.jpg |

I was just in San Francisco on Saturday and was a bit disappointed that the Golden Gate seemed so small. It was my first time crossing it and you know how they say celebrities always look smaller in person... It is gorgeous, though.

Austin's Pennybacker Bridge spanning the Colorado River, (Lake Austin), in West Austin. This is far and away Austin's most famous bridge, even though it's only 25 years old. The roadway is the Capital of Texas Highway, or Loop 360 as it's also known. The bridge also goes by Loop 360 Bridge, or just 360 Bridge. The bridge's design was meant to mimic the hills of West Austin.

Anyway, here are a few from Vancouver, B.C., Canada: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...dcaaf4b9dz.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...0uImIRJ_ph.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...8gVjfvU_ph.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...mElRb_ph-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...0/DSCN2329.jpg Here's a tiny bridge from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Niagara_ph.jpg |
At 13 km in length, one of the world's greatest bridges - Canada's Confederation bridge:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...0/bordenpe.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../bridgenb3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...10/nbshore.jpg In winter: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...tionbridge.jpg In fact, this is the longest bridge in the world over water subject to freezing part of the year. The Mackinac bridge is about 8 km long in comparison. |
It's really a biased choice, but I've always like the Ambassador Bridge over the Detroit River.

Texas' tallest bridge, the Fred Hartman Bridge completed in 1995. It's a cable-stayed bridge. It crosses the Houston ship channel at Baytown,Texas. 1,250 foot mainspan. The whole bridge is 2 1/2 miles long. 176 foot clearance I believe.
