(KUTGW - Keep Up The Great Work!)

I love the fact that the 2006/07 era construction shots of the TMC are ALREADY DATED.

Though even the photo from the 90s (2nd in the series) gives you an idea of how much has changed over the past 10 years.

Reverberation Jun 20, 2009 2:44 AM

Two from my flickr site. These are from the Greenspoint area.

Agreed

Houston & LA's skyline are strikingly similar in height, number of buildings, & architecture. Even from certain angles they bear strong resemblance. In total number of talls though Houston has LA beat.

OneMetropolis Jun 20, 2009 5:58 AM

Houston skyline and architecture is nice is just that it's in the middle of scenic nowhere as for the rest of the city. I would have a huge problem living in Texas because I'd feel isolated from the rest of the world really. Texas is just to big for me, but yeah good location plays a huge role in a skyline. A skyline that seems out of place (Houston) and is fairly isolated loses points, but of course i am just spewing out of my ass and i never really been to Houston nor Texas so basically yeah.:D

How is Texas isolated? We're located right in the center of the US (3 hours from West Coast 3 hours from East Coast by air) if anything, California is very isolated from the rest of the country besides the West Coast & Mexico.

We are working on that and with many more more rail lines and hopefully pedestrian corridor guidelines by 2012 things will start to change.

As far as feeling isolated...I don't think this is the case. We are in the mega state of Texas with 3 of the top 10 most populous cities in America and are halfway between the east and west coasts, as pointed out, so I've never felt isolated.

Great_Hizzy Jun 20, 2009 10:58 PM

Wow, Kevin, you're right. It's absolutely amazing how "small" the TMC appears in these photos from just a few years ago compared to now, especially when you realize the growth to what would be to the south of the photo.

Still, great stuff.

urbanactivist Jun 22, 2009 3:15 PM

For anybody that's interested in historical city photos, the Chronicle just published an amazing blog with several photos of Houston in the 1920s. Here is the link, and a couple of the photos from there. Check it out!!!

What a ridiculous post. This guy has a poor understanding of geography in this country. Probably has no idea that Houston is located in EAST Texas, where there's beautiful trees and vegetation in many areas.

It's amazing that many people in this country think Texas is out there somewhere near Utah or Wyoming (yep, I've run into people who really believe that). I hope this Californian is smarter than that. I encountered a couple on the east coast who questioned how Houston could have a big port when it's "not anywhere near a body of water." The lack of knowledge of geography in this country is sickening.

pm91 Jul 1, 2009 5:08 AM

Man! i love seeing the old Houston photos!! i just wish some of it was still here like all the Victorian architecture and trollies :).

sorry but i have to comment on this.. Houston isn't isolated at all! yes Texas is freakin huge, (add Colorado to California and you have the same size as Texas), but not isolated. And what the hell does Mr. California mean by "Houston skyline and architecture is nice is just that it's in the middle of scenic nowhere"? please, do elaborate. And when you say "isolated", whom is Texas/Houston isolated from? Media? Megatropolis'? God forbid, PEOPLE?!?! I for one can say that I have never felt isolated here in Houston or San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, Galveston even. Lubbock is about as close to isolation one can be in Texas..everything is freakin three hours away from it! but hey it is damn near 250,000 people..

SORRY!!!! I don't want to start anything! Just had to get that off my chest. I feel much better now! :)

the Genral Jul 1, 2009 6:53 AM

Great pics, just drove thru Houston on the way to Galveston a few weeks ago. When you pick up 45 and it takes you right to the edge of downtown, the bigger downtown, and you are in the shadow of the tallies, and looking at the beautiful architecture and driving 65mph its amazing and a bit scarey. I love this town! Close to the coast, NASA...tons to do there! In fact, its in the middle of everywhere!!

Sure is looking a lot better from up high with those old surface lots filled or being filled in downtown.

VivaLFuego Jul 8, 2009 6:08 PM

I really love the skyline view coming up 288 then taking the ramp to 59 south... that shot sort of captures the viewpoint but of course with a much larger viewing frame.
