Newbie warning!
Hello all! I came here in search of a good look at the Old Hall of Records and found myself immediately hooked. From then until now, I've been going through the entire thread, chasing the end page from 792 to 810. What a magnificent ride! You all have taught this longtime Angeleno a great deal about his city. I hope to be able to make my own modest contributions as we go along from here.
I have a partial answer to a pictorial question posed by Ethereal Reality back around page 804: Quote:
[edit] The previous information was from memory, and is not quite accurate. Gulf completed its purchase of Wilshire Oil Company of California, an LA-based firm founded in 1914 by George and Victor Machris, by 1960, but apparently continued to operate it under the Wilshire name until 1966. |
Welcome to the thread, Otis, and thanks for an informative first post!

More Lincoln High

An undated but early view: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psb118551a.jpg LAPL -- http://jpg3.lapl.org/pics13/00026080.jpg Lincoln's principal from 1916-1945 was Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus (1884-1967). She was California's first female high school principal and went on to found the National Retired Teachers Association in 1947 and AARP in 1958. [Info from: http://lhsaatigers.org/School_News.html and http://assets.aarp.org/www.aarp.org_...andrus_bio.pdf] This photo of Lincoln High is dated c. 1928, but is apparently earlier. The tall building in the rear was the auditorium. (The home next to the school is the former Woolwine house. More on that at http://oldhomesoflosangeles.blogspot...-broadway.html): http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6aa08a92.jpg USC Digital Library -- http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si.../id/3131/rec/5 Woolwine home gone. From LAPL: "The school was closed to students on November 2, 1934, after engineers reported many of the buildings were in danger of sliding down the hill toward North Broadway because of shifting ground of the hill. The engineers and geologists reported three of the buildings are in danger of collapsing down the hill upon other structures. The auditorium, music and library buildings will be torn down. The English building has been cracked from the weight of holding up the library with braced steel and concrete supports. The English, administration, and gymnasium buildings will be repaired. Other buildings will be used temporarily." http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...ps01bb2b90.jpg LAPL -- http://jpg1.lapl.org/pics43/00041338.jpg Moving tents onto campus, October 30, 1934: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8c14d9e9.jpg LAPL -- http://jpg1.lapl.org/pics43/00041321.jpg Also October 30, 1934. From LAPL: "A newly arisen "tent village" is shown on the grounds of Lincoln High School on North Broadway where three buildings have been condemned and three others closed because of earth slippage beneath the hill on which the school is built. Students are attending classes in the tents and buildings which are not in danger. The auditorium, music and library buildings are to be razed, and the English, administration and boys' gymnasium buildings will remain closed until the other structures, which tower over and threaten them, are removed." __ Thank you for the information on the Wilshire gas stations Otis. That image of the fence had me stumped for quite some time. Intrigued, I googled your name Otis Criblecoblis and images of W.C. Elizabeth Short case....
Dr. George Hodel was arrested for incest and child molestation in 1949--....booking photo.
Incidentally, Dr. Hodel is considered by many to be the prime suspect in the Elizabeth Short murder case....better known as the "The Black Dahlia" which was the nickname given to Elizabeth Short (July 29, 1924 – c. January 15, 1947). http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psb9e9066e.jpg Dr. George Hodel's booking photo taken at Hall of Justice Justice on 10.6.1949 Excerpt from Commander Tom Vetter's television interview, September 2, 2004: "I was a detective then in 1962 and I was driving Undersheriff Jimmy Downy and he was going to lunch with then Chief of Detectives, Gordy Bowers and they were good friends. As we were driving along somehow the Black Dahlia murder came up in their conversation. And I heard Jimmy say that, "Oh that [Black Dahlia case] had been solved, but it will never come out, because it was some doctor they all knew out in Hollywood." |
