I don't know. The Barton Myers write-up doesn't give a reason except to say they were "engaged to renovate the building so that it read as an entirely new structure" (the work was done in '96). It's still totally recognizable, but was brought out of the 70s and made into something light, airy and new. I miss that green lit "Carlsberg" sign at the top though. Seeing that meant we were almost home. The structure still functions as a gateway to the neighborhood, signaling that one is past all the Beverly Hills/ Century City nonsense.

Here's today's Julius Shulman post. It's "Job 1490: Pereira & Luckman, Western Geophysical Co. of America, 1953". I'm intrigued by "Research Laboratories & Shops" above the door.

The 1956 CD lists the Western Geophysical Co lab & shops at 923 N La Brea Avenue. The March 2014 image (below) shows the building intact and in the hands of Mole-Richardson, a stage lighting company founded in 1927.

Like the Citibank building at Wilshire and La Cienega from a few days ago, we've only just lost this well-preserved building. The GSV image from later in 2014 shows the building being demolished. It looks like the replacement was completed very recently.

Mole-Richardson also occupied the old ModernCraft Laundry building across the street. The tragic demise of that building was covered here in 2014 - Beaudry's post #22011 was the first one I found. The developers were quick to knock down the Morgan, Walls & Clements structure, but the site is still empty. Here's a 2011 reminder of what was lost.

Maybe we just don't get it? Of course the difference between Rauschenberg and the developers is that Rauschenberg only did it once. There aren't museums full of destroyed artwork for us to admire and ponder over.

All of the Ocean Front Walk locations are difficult to compare because the Googlemobile doesn't go there. Instead, you're at the mercy of amateur pictures taken from the beach. On the right, the Winn apartments now have a mural down the side. On the left is where the Montezuma Apartments were - I'm not sure if it's the same building. On the far left, the Hotel Cadillac is still standing.

Thank you for this one. The way the shoreline changed in Long Beach, especially as regards the Ocean Center building, is a discomforting amazement. One used to step from it directly onto the sand. I'm always half-convinced that the building blew inland. Most disorienting:
