This line is included in the description of the albums. "The titles of the albums, as well as the captions, are those of the original editors and are reflective of their time, place and language." [last line, below] https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/I3xP0W.jpg UMC |
Nothing to do with umc 'missions', but interesting non-the-less.
This was listed on ebay a few days ago. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/DbeQud.jpg Ebay Described as: ..."Vintage Street Scene Original Snapshot Photo 1940s LOS ANGELES Cal." Is anyone familiar with Peden's? (sign on side of building) . |

Do you think this neon is the same as in the above photos? The commercial starts at 4 seconds, the Golden Gopher neon appears at 7 seconds followed by a street level view of the Palladium on Sunset Blvd. Because of NLA I recognized this! |

The L. A. GAS 'gas-o-meters' have been one of the most popular subjects on Nla. Here are some of the entries. L.A. GAS gas-o-meter and Amelia Street School (including a baist map)....HERE 1950s color slide: Gas-o-meter in comparison with the 102 Brewery. ....HERE Undated glass slide: gas-o-meter near Sperry Flour Compant. ....HERE And check out this page at 'American Film Noirs' dedicated to the 'L. A. Gas Works' that have appeared in...well...film noirs. Duh! .... Go HERE Quote:

Here's a larger view of the corner from the original photo. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...lshire1938.jpg mil.library.ucsb.edu Ten years earlier (1928), it looks like the circular area was just a parling lot with a couple of rectangular buildings around the outside. I think the center detail may just have been a decorative garden. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...lshire1928.jpg mil.library.ucsb.edu |
Are you sure this thing hasn't landed in Beverly Hills.

We have visited the Tam-O-Shanter Inn on Nla...
but it's rare to come across a never-before-seen [amateur] snapshot from 1924! https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/ebwRKf.jpg Ebay https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/MhhOIT.jpg Still in operation at 2980 Los Feliz Blvd. |

There are some great historic downtown locations featured in the video including the Millennium Biltmore, Los Angeles Theater and Saint Vincent Court. |

https://i.postimg.cc/vmsrjFsZ/lagunacinemaetc-bmp.jpgGSV 140 S Coast Hwy, Laguna Beach...at least the theater is still there. In the vintage shot it was playing "Road House" with Ida Lupino, Richard Widmark, Celeste Holm, and the especially pulchritudinous Cornel Wilde...all of whom we've seen on NLA before, of course. https://i.postimg.cc/1Rv86g5H/roadhouse4-bmp.jpgIMDB |
:previous: Excellent GW!
Here's another mystery location from the same ebay seller. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...921/H7fi46.jpg no longer listed https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/ln8iMs.jpg Snow I thought perhaps the car on the right had come down from the mountains..but there is snow on the other cars as well. (note the one by the Gallo billboard) The station, itself, looks like a small grain bin. (especially with the metal roof and vent on top), like this one. .... I know because I'm surrounded by them. :farmer: |

This part of the 1926 Sanborn Map (Los Angeles, Volume 21, Sheet 2143) shows the left side of the above photo, with Wilshire at the top and Santa Monica Blvd. at the bottom. A large, latticed greenhouse is between the two streets: https://i1165.photobucket.com/albums...psrzqepkn5.jpg ProQuest via LA Public Library |

Thank you both HossC and Flyingwedge for more information on that triangle area in Beverly Hills! Quote:
Agree, thanks GW! Quote:
We know about the snow in L.A. in 1949. We've also had snow photos on NLA with dates of 1944 (downtown), 1947 and 1948 (valley), previously. |

Thanks for that video link badrunner. I enjoyed seeing all those locations you mentioned in it, as well as the L.A. subway! How great to run around the Biltmore acting free as a bird like that! (I may be visiting there briefly next month!) |

Since you posted about this area recently...notice in the GSV view above, in the lower right hand corner :previous: where "Pinches Tacos" is now located. I recently saw this photo that I don't recall posted on NLA before that was taken there when it was the Dudley Do Right Emporium. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7162/...a44b018b_b.jpgVLA-FLickr It must've been taken around the time of that infamous Burt Reynolds centerfold issue in Cosmopolitan which was April of 1972. The only gasoline and oil service station, I could find with a 1121 address in the available 1940s LA CDs. https://i.imgur.com/hkrpyC7.jpg rescarta.lapl.org This 1938 aerial of the vicinity where 1121 N. Mission Rd. would have been located has a circular (maybe grain bin type :)) structure on the corner. https://i.imgur.com/HbdatyH.jpg mil.library.ucsb.edu - Flight AXJ_1938 - Frame 45-30  |
