I did a little research &...
The old three bell campanile was destroyed in the 1812 Wrightwood Earthquake.
(as someone said earlier, this is the same earthquake destroyed the old stone church at San Juan Capistrano)

I tried to find an illustration of the campanile, without success.


When first built, the stone church had an arched roof.

If I remember correctly, there was a bank in this general vicinity(?), that looked very much like this building. (the unique lighting fixtures joggled my memory)

I've been fascinated by infrared photography since I was a tot, now that we have digital cameras(with a slight modification, removal of the 'hot mirror'), IR is pretty easy to do. I shoot one shot with my IR camera and then shoot the same shot with my regular camera to add some of the visual color back into the shot.

#2 is looking west down the 101 through Downtown. The photo was taken from the Hill Street overpass and the building is the LAUSD HQ on Grand.

#4 I think is backwards, the building in the back is the Wilshire Terrace Condominiums(they still have the same logo on the building) at Wilshire and Beverly Glen the other building is 10401 Wilshire(across Beverly Glen).

ETA: Framefinder also shows that these are the only highrise residential buildings on Wilshire in 1960

Max Yavno (1911-1985) was a noted "street" photographer who worked in Los Angeles primarily in the mid-late '40's....he was mentioned by Greg H. in a post back on pg. 720, in reference to Yavno's photo-essay "The Los Angeles Book", published in 1950...some additional Yavno pictures...

I can't place this lion. Is it being moved or is it in situ?

It reminds me of the Selig Zoo sculptures...and the lions on the steps of the old Los Angeles Courthouse.

Going by the 1960 CD, it's Manning's Coffee Cafe at 319 W 5th Street.

From the left we have 333 W 5th Charles Diamond Co, 331 W 5th Kennedy's Card Shop, and 329 W 5th Hollinger & Berke optometrists.

The bank you're thinking of might be one of the locations of First Western Bank designed by Robert C. Browne in the late 1960s. There is a really great one at 400 N. Glendale Ave. in Glendale. Here's a photo on Michael Locke's Flickr page.

Yes, Hoss is correct.....this is W. 5th St. The newest car there I believe is the light blue 1955 Cadillac. The building with the flag pole on the 12th floor roof is the Chester Williams Building that I've posted on. I've been inside that building many times.

I was just going to point that out. Most all the cars are older but the Buick is definately a 1959.

If you look closely, it says the men are standing in front of the 'Grand Lodge'. [see below]

panoramic photo featuring the Elks Club of Los Angeles, California in 1915. The photo was found rolled-up in our attic in Wisconsin. Aside from the Elks Club several businesses and points of interest can be seen, including "Hotel Imperial", "Virgil" (Store), Trolley (East Lake Park and North Main Street destination placards), "The Great Western Steam Cleaning Works", "Stapleton Furniture Company", "Stillwell Hotel", and the "Mozart Theatre".
