Remarkable image of May Co and surrounds, depicting Auto Center, Annex/Home Appliance Center and streets that once bisected LACMA grounds (Orange Grove and Ogden). https://skyscraperpage.com/forum/sho...postcount=7488 https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chor...2865_4__2_.jpg https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chor...2865_4__2_.jpg |

Nice Weissmuller related photos, Godzilla. This one reminded me that I met Spanky once. (Another time I met Butch!) |

Edgar Rice Burroughs is buried on Ventura Boulevard in Encino- and not in a cemetery. |
.
On or under Ventura Blvd? This negative was just posted on eBay ..................................................The Steve Allen Playhouse. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/iusOxS.jpg . . .why doesn't it ring a bell? update:........I just found out it was located at 1228 Vine Street. I was kidding about Edgar Rice Burroughs being buried under Ventura Blvd. . |

A very unflattering review of LA's new streetlight design...

We have seen various plank roads, elevated cycleways and lengthy wooden piers/wharves. This brings to mind the Rincon Road aka Rincon Highway aka Rincon Parkway in Ventura - and any splintered vestiges thereof. http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...oad&DMROTATE=0http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...oad&DMROTATE=0 http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...oad&DMROTATE=0http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...oad&DMROTATE=0http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si...coll65/id/7688 https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/00...g?v=1402685013https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/00...g?v=1402685013 https://www.pediment.com/products/ve...s-history-book https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...-004669%29.jpghttps://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...-004669%29.jpg |

:previous: The one photo of the design in the above link doesn't give one an appreciation of the designers intent so before anyone judges it on that one photo alone, here's a link that shows several variations: https://www.timeout.com/los-angeles/...-design-090320 After viewing that article and also this one which shows three other finalists and two honorable mentions... https://sports.yahoo.com/finalists-l...202522765.html Well, I'm pretty neutral about the winner. (Or meh?) And the way they show it in various functions make it seem like a hatrack you can hang things on and attach things to. Is that a good idea? Seems messy. On the other hand, I like it better than any of the five of the other finalists pictured in that link. Are any of you familiar with this? A commenter on Mstimc's link page wrote: I live on a block in Los Angeles without streetlights. In researching the issue I discovered that the city did not require streetlights to be installed by housing developers until the mid-1950s. Installing streetlights requires circulating a petition to homeowners to which a majority representing at least 60% of the benefiting frontage must sign. Once a majority of homeowners approve, they are all assessed a one-time charge of between $3,000 to $8,000 and a modest annual maintenance fee thereafter once the streetlights are installed. Not surprisingly, many homeowners do not have money like this lying around and are not interested in paying this assessment. Because of this “all-or-nothing” approach to installing streetlights, our block and many others remain dark at night with a hodgepodge of porch spotlights and solar lamps meekly illuminating the dark. |

I wonder if the barricaded-off area in the middle of the parking lot is a tar seep? The proximity to Lake Pit and knowing that tar will seep through cracks in the pavement in this area makes it a strong possibility. |

It was good to see an old friend in that huge aerial posted yesterday. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/H2l73m.jpg detail It's the colorful art deco apartments at 724 S. Genesee. (built in 1931) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/3mxdZF.jpg gsv note the garage entrance front and center. I've always wondered what was up on the . .um. .entrance level patio area. (the top of the garage) Well, I finally found out! It's a rather nicely understated art deco fountain complete with a bench. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/WIARAD.jpg real estate / zillow I need some help with the two bas-reliefs. Does anyone what to wager a guess as to what they depict? Here's a closer ,but blurry, look. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/auV2eP.jpg The one on the right looks like a transgender member of the Continental Army....I have no idea about the left one. If anyone is in the area will you run up there and take a look. ;) A previous post on 724 S. Genesee: HERE . |
