Thanks, Hoss. So the real riddle last night was "When is the Norton Building not the Norton Building?". Having been on that bus deck behind 6th and Main at least a couple of hundred times, it was my first instinct. But I've been conditioned to look for the Hotel Cecil, which because of the angle would be out of the photo to the right. And I've never seen a private automobile parked where the Buick is. Appreciate your squaring me away!

unihikid, I've been trying to dig up a vintage photograph of the old 'Scout House' but haven't had any luck.

Ill try and look for a photo. It was a ranch style building that was in ok condition (it had a bad elevator..the scout executive at the time got stuck in it). I want to say it was built around 1954, at least that's when the phone booth was installed. The copper roof building is what replaced it.

With so many prominent Stiles Oliver Clements buildings around, it's easy to forget about these smaller projects. Luckily, Julius Shulman photographed quite a few of them. This is "Job 625: Stiles Oliver Clements, Southern California Clinic Building (Los Angeles, Calif.),1949".

The sign in the first picture identifies the location as Francisco Street and 8th Place. The U-shaped nature of the 8th Place west of Francisco Street meant that it could have been in one of two places. The 1955 aerial view below shows the clinic at the southerly of the two possible locations - it's the single-story white building near the lower-right corner.

Here are a couple of aerial views to show how the area changed. There's no sign of the clinic on the 1948 view, so I assume it was new when Mr Shulman took his pictures in 1949. The 1952 image (below) shows how close the freeway construction came. By 1994, most of the block next to the freeway was a parking lot, but the clinic building was still standing.

The clinic finally succumbed to "progress" sometime between 1994 and 2003 (I didn't check the building records). Notice how the shape of 8th Place can still be seen in 2003. By 2004, the whole lot had been resurfaced.

Owned since 1967 by the director James Bridges (The Paper Chase, the China Syndrome, Urban Cowboy) and Jack Larson, who played Jimmie Olsen in the TV series The Adventures of Superman. Bridges died in 1993 and Larson died last year, hence the sale.

One building is facing Benton Way and London St. (shown below), and a second building behind is facing a short street called Dryden Place.

Reposting again for assistance. How does one go about finding an original or copy (clearer than this one) of a photo from the LA Times, 1936? It's a pic of my home designed by Chateau Marmont and El Royale architect, W. Douglas Lee!

built in 1885.

The statues were originally at the end of Wilshire Boulevard, before it was joined to Orange Street across Westlake Park. There's a good article about them on the Silent Locations blog, and information about General Otis on Wikipedia. When the causeway across the park was built, the statues were moved slightly, and the soldier figure is no longer there.

Thought maybe we'd covered the missing soldier before, but I've always read that it was destroyed by a car that ran into the monument. I was under the impression that it was decades ago, but unless there was a previous similar incident, it appears to have happened in 2009. Text from the Times of May 11, 2009:
