The N Line ran on W. 9th St. (now James M. Wood Blvd.) east of Vermont Ave., but several passes with the Googlemobile failed to turn up a match. Many of the properties along this street have been demolished/replaced over the last 66 years. One clue I noticed is that properties east of Westmoreland Ave. tend to be above street level, so this photo might've been taken in that first block from Vermont.

Unfortunately the dash sign on LATL 460 has been washed out just enough to make it unreadable on my screen, so we can't confirm direction of travel to better orient the photograph. It would read either "8th & Western" or "Union Station", and either looks plausible to me. My default orientation is that we're looking generally east.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hoss's aerial (below) makes it looks very interesting...especially with the slightly curved front....or rather 'arms' extending out at a slight angle on either side.

If this is an east-west street I would agree that we are looking east in this shot. The shadows pointing northeast would make sense. L.A. being in the northern hemisphere, we never have long shadows pointing anywhere south.
I'm afraid that's all I got.

But notice that it says 'near' Los Angeles, so maybe this isn't the home on the southeast corner of Crescent Height Blvd. and Fountain Avenue.

Well, let's not get too confused, E_R! I originally posted about the location in question because I was trying to find out where the exact location of the Hollywood Guild and Canteen was, not to be confused with the Hollywood Canteen. That was in this post:

We know the address was 1284 N. Crescent Heights. It was started by a woman named Anne "Moms" Lehr who ran the place out of her house at that address. Sources, including the Hollywood Canteen Book and Hollywood, the First 100 Years say she ran the place in "what used to be the home of silent film star Dustin Farnham." (Online sources about the silent film actor have his name spelled as Farnum and Farnham, depending where you look.)

What we know definitely is that this location is not on a hill. In all three photos we can see a long curved walkway leading to the corner of Fountain Ave. and Crescent Heights Blvd. In the postcard and "Guild" entrance photo the slanted roof architecture looks the same. There's also that palm tree in the same location.

We also know that this location was gone by 1952 and replaced by an apartment building or two, one of which was the Oleander Arms.

The Gail Patrick article link opens with the interviewer describing her home and we know that his description of it is NOT this location, he says it is in the Hollywood Hills for one, and also this location was not around in 1979, when he conducted the interview. We also don't know the address of the location he's talking about because it's not provided.

So, either the interviewer has incorrect information or the sources I have are incorrect, or Dustin had two residences at one time. If someone knows where Gail Patrick's address in 1979 could be located, we could research further into it.

I haven't ever come across a "postcard photo" picturing a star's home incorrectly, so I am assuming that is Dustin's residence. (Star "maps," yes, are often incorrect for one reason or another.)

Also, the postcard of Dustin's home saying "near Los Angeles"...in the 20's West Hollywood (or 'Sherman") was near Los Angeles.

I don't know who the "bolero dude" is, but I was looking at the other photo again and thinking the "valley boy" is the same person. (Maybe?)

(I was looking at the eBay seller pages and he says these photos are from a man who used to go around to different store locations
and take photos of their window displays, which he also has slides of for sale, along with some others like the ones above. So it may
be the same person. The slides are from those 3-D slides, I forget the name, where you have two images and look at the slides on
some contraption we've mentioned before so they look 3-D. Stereoptical or something.)

OK, I just saw this on eBay a few minutes ago. In this pic. it's obvious one is the motorman and one is the ticket taker (would he be considered a conductor?)

I can't figure out where this is exactly.

I'm pretty sure we're looking at the back of a large grandstand on the left (could this be a corner of Pershing Square?)

This could be preparations for one of the Presidential visits, but there's no way of knowing for sure. (unless I'm missing some clues)

Bolo?

I know that years ago that was the name of that job on British buses. The Who have a line about the conductor in the song "Magic Bus".
It is also a job that was eliminated or added to the driver's duties years ago in Britain.

Not a bolo. We used to call one like he's wearing a "string tie."
