Main Street Gym #1

Shown above is Turn Halle, aka the Turn-Verein Germania Building, at 321 S. Main. Its cornerstone was laid on October 22, 1893. You can see it here on the 1894 Sanborn Map at 319-21-23 S. Main. In 1926 the building became home to the Main Street Athletic Club, aka the Main Street Gym. This photo of the gym is undated, but I'd guess it was from the mid- to late-40s and certainly no later than February 3, 1951: https://i1165.photobucket.com/albums...ps7jtpe2qu.jpg UCLA/Islandora/Los Angeles Daily News Negatives Balcony ad close-up: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...pskouvp1zk.jpg February 5, 1951, Los Angeles Times: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...ps56clnmd5.jpg http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...ps27wfc9pl.jpg ProQuest via LAPL This post-fire photo of the Main Street Gym looks in the opposite direction from the previous photo. So since there's been some talk recently about the Main St Gym at the Turner Halle, thought I'd mention it was by Capitain & Krempel. I took a screen grab of when I'd included it in a Powerpoint about LA's Romanesque past and then screenshot those other instances of Capitain/Krempel's inclusions therein just for fun, because that's literally my idea of fun. Threw it all on the desktop and it came out like so:

The line between the school house light and the drop cord may be a pull chain for the school house light canopy switch. It was common to have pull chain switches on ceiling lights in the day. The string may be to operate the switch or most likely a way to hang a light weight sign for customers to read. The chain looks like it's attached to the plate holding the drop cord. The plate for the drop cord may be a device for attaching drop cords to knob and tube wiring or a duplex outlet. My guess is the drop cord light was a non elegant way to get more light at the counter rather than a replacement for the school house light. The bulb must have glared like crazy. |

Quote:
Thanks for posting those images of Main Street Gym #2, e_r. Here is another (undated) shot: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...pskmjgkbvf.jpg 00028196 at LA Public Library Main Street Gym #2 was at 318-1/2 S. Main Street, in the (1911?) Adolphus Theatre building: Quote:
Here is the same building in 1974, with "MAIN STREET GYM" in the second-floor windows. The parking entrance is at center under the old theater marquee; the gym entrance is just to the left of that and to the right of the MEXICO LUGGAGE sign: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psihfevkdg.jpg 00015199 at LA Public Library The November 13, 1952, Los Angeles Times notes that "The new Olympic gym opened its doors last week at 318 1/2 S Main St." The 1956 LA Street Address Directory lists the Olympic Gym at that address, but there are a couple Times references in 1959 to the Main Street Gym, and by 1960 the name had officially changed. The poster on the right is from 1969, so let's assume the photo below is from that year as well. On the awning you can still see the P and the C from the old Olympic Gym days: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1lvq1xrv.jpg 00028199 at LA Public Library The October 5, 1970, Daily Trojan has an article on the Main Street Gym, including information on the original location. The article has photos of the gym and its owner, Howie Steindler. The Times ran a long article on the gym on February 26, 1976, which included e_r's 1976 photo above; the text of the article's first page is below: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psebbar6rr.jpg ProQuest via LA Public Library On Wednesday evening, March 9, 1977, Howie Steindler was murdered in the back seat of his own automobile: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psmdxxajat.jpg http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psevjsepvz.jpg March 11, 1977, Los Angeles Times at ProQuest via LA Public Library Sportswriter Jim Murray wrote about Steindler the same day: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7hfo3u9r.jpg http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5kdznctm.jpg March 11, 1977, Los Angeles Times at ProQuest via LA Public Library On February 15, 1978, the Times reported that Steindler's widow had received his wallet in the mail the previous December. However, the case is still unsolved. Steindler's daughter Carol ran the gym until the Adolphus Theatre building was torn down in late 1984. She then operated another "Main Street Gym" behind the Olympic Auditorium for a short time until that gym was also demolished. |
Thank you FW for the C O R R E C T I O N.
I had completely forgotten about the 2nd location in the Adolphus Theatre building. Opened as the Panorama* Theater, it became the Adolphus Theater from November 27, 1911 when it was taken over by Adolph Ramash after alterations had been made to the plans of architectural firm Mayberry & Parker. Seating was provided for 1,450, all on a single level together with 12 seats in each of the single boxes located at the side of the proscenium. The stage was 50ft deep. It was the largest of the theatres on Main Street in the downtown area of Los Angeles. In 1913 a 700-seat balcony was added, with plans provided by architect Otto Janssen and it reopened as the Hippodrome Theatre on August 31, 1913. After closing, the auditorium was demolished in September & October 1952 and the space used for parking. The front of the building remained for many years, housing a gymnasium. It, too, has been demolished. cinematreasures *The Panorama was originally a skating rink? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/VTKHlM.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/iJb6Wm.jpg go to los angeles herald, may 10 1906 __ 3 MONTHS LATER Masquerade in July. Then the Feds outlawed them: https://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/08/m...matchbook.html Cheers, Earl |
