Lloyd Wright and his Wayfarer's Chapel

I've watched a lot of these segments and this problem apparently went on for years, although Wright was the only guest I saw who pointed it out. Not to spoil the clip, but panelist Dorothy Kilgallen sort of accidently guesses Wright's identity. What was her appeal? She seems very unappealing. She often whined about the rules, or being confused, or not being able to hear. |

Indirectly related. The Farmery. http://150181474.homesconnect.com/Ac...a079af5abe.jpghttp://150181474.homesconnect.com/Ac...a079af5abe.jpg Not unlike columnists Walt Winchell and Louella Parsons, Dorothy Kilgallen's pen and mouth wielded significant heft. Her personal life was every bit as controversial. Evidently co-panelists on the referenced program shared your opinions.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy_Kilgallen |

Thx for the FLW/"What's My Line?" clip. OMG, when worlds collide. I liked Kilgallen plenty. I'm not sure why. Maybe b/c she was very outspoken and didn't seem to be making any efforts at being society's idea of a "good girl". She was also a New Yorker and reminded me of The New Yorker, a magazine I was devoted to. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-8...14747%2BAM.jpg wiki Thx too for the early shots of 'The Little Glass Church' (as I always called it). Other PV destinations were Marineland of the Pacific and my summer camp at Portuguese Bend. |

Just this afternoon I came across this unique vintage photograph that shows a large parking lot directly across from CBS Columbia Square. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...661/RtLMWr.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/1950s-KODACH...item2ca15fe70b I've never noticed the Jump n' Jive Record Shop before. (is that a clock on the roof?...it seems odd) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...661/NQr7fR.jpg detail that rusty jalopy really stands out from the rest of the cars. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...540/VYFMsL.jpg detail I'd really like to see a vintage aerial or two that shows Columbia Square and the parking lot. (hint ;)) It makes me wonder what was there before the lot. or if the Jump n' Jive record shop shows up in any aerials. I doubt it was there for very long. Today the site of the parking lot is a shmall called 'Gower Gulch' with a Rite-Aid and various other shops. __ |

I recall that much salvaged timber, from the old Pacific Ocean Pier, was used in building it https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-E...12814%2BPM.jpg gsv |
:previous: It's too bad those small trees hide the main entrance to Columbia Square. See how much better it looks in the vintage photo,
when you could see the CBS sign over entrance and the thin horizontal line of windows. __ |

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...8.jpg~original Historic Aerials The 1952 view is virtually identical to the one above, so I've skipped ahead to 1964. Sadly, both the NBC Studios and the drive-in have gone. Notice that the area above the CBS Studios near Selma is now about 50% parking lot. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original Historic Aerials By 1972 the developments on the NBC Studios and drive-in sites is complete. The area above the CBS Studios is now all parking lot. This is the last image that shows the parking lot south of Sunset before the mall. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original Historic Aerials The mall is visible on the 1977 image, but it's not very clear. I decided to go with the similar 1980 image instead. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...0.jpg~original Historic Aerials I'll finish with this angled view from the Aerials Over Hollywood video which is from the mid-40s. Columbia Square is roughly in the center at the top. A bit of the Taft Building is just visible in the lower left corner. NB. The video is well worth watching, but some/all of the footage is mirrored, which can be confusing. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...H.jpg~original archive.org |

__ Thanks for the aerials Hoss!! Columbia Square development
Here's the sequence e_r:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-A...52634%2BPM.jpg hollywood photographs https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-7...52822%2BPM.jpg gsv https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-o...53118%2BPM.jpg columbiasquare.com The first developer wanted to destroy Columbia Square. He finally relented but planned enormous towers, which would have overwhelmed the Lescaze complex. He came a cropper and sold out to the current developer for $65 million (a good price). Now the whole project is massively scaled back, which is great. I heard Viacom is taking two of the new buildings and others are interested. Columbia Square looks to be set for success. What a cliffhanger. P.S. Here's Columbia Square's own 'then and now(ish)': https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-9...62618%2BPM.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-E...62620%2BPM.jpg |
Thanks much, folks! I'll see what I can fit in. Hitting the Esotouric tour in the morning on Saturday, trying to get in on the Museum of Neon art in the evening, but just on the waiting list for that.

I haven't been by there for a while, but last time I passed by, it was still being rented out as a film location (or at least the sign advertising that was still on the door). |
