Bob--

I can use all the friends I can get--even temporary ones--LOL! My mom's cousin (little girl on the left), who is still very much alive, recently gave me three photo albums from her youth. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a picture or two of Logan school in there somewhere!

I Binged it--there was a Lockwood Auto Court in Lincoln Heights in the 20's at 2222 Parkside (now 3851 Mission Road). Here's a link to a website. It looks very similiar to your picture...

Does anyone know if the police call boxes were originally blue, and did they all have the light on top?

That police call box wouldn't work too well as a T.A.R.D.I.S., but I can see the British influence nonetheless. ;)

Could be....but the auto camp in my postcard is much more makeshift than the auto court in the above postcard.
Maybe it evolved into what we see in the color postcard.

There is a Lockwood Avenue in East Hollywood/Silver Lake, so maybe we should check that out as well.

I get the feeling that some artist applied a bit of paint to the postcard art.:D

There's a bit of history on the call boxes here: http://harrymarnell.net/kma367-2.htm (scroll down a little)

...but the page doesn't show the nice free-standing one like yours.

Four of these lions, dating from 1915, are now installed at the Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park.

Here's one of them.

In the 1930s the doors on that side open to the studio Casting Offices. A day's work...$5

Indeed, John Wayne, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers all got their start in this neighborhood as did director John Ford.

Like our friend Tom Mix, he learned his trade at the 101 Ranch in Bliss, Oklahoma. In his earliest film appearances he was billed as Charles Jones. Sadly, 'Buck' Jones was one of the 492 victims of the 1942 Coconut Grove fire in Boston Massachusetts, dying two days after the tragic November 28th fire. -noir

I remember the call boxes attched to telephone poles or light posts and I don't recall having a light on them. But regardless, these are beautiful photos.. But I sure am old enough to remember seeing these in use more than once.

:previous: That was my worry, that the lights were added & not original.

Buck Jones...how he died:

The fire moved so fast (12 to 15 minutes beginning to end) it killed many people right at the dining table. Many victims died due to the smoke. Buck was found slumped at his table with 3rd degree burns on his face and around his mouth. He died after lingering in incredible pain at a Boston hospital.

He was on a War Bond tour, had a bad cold that night and had tried to beg off of going out for dinner. Noir for sure!

The box you show is a "phantom" it is made from a Gamewell Secuirity Post and a cable box (cable box has blank doors as they just had wiring inside). the box has had wording on separate pieces of metal applied to make it look like it is authentic. L.A. had over a life time many different boxes, both pedestal type and boxes mounted on telephone poles. After the Watts Riots in '65 the Fire Alarm boxes began to be removed because of false alarms and deteriorating lines. Many were given a sheet steel door with a tag that said POLICE and rewired for police use. It is too hard to explain how many types were used through the years here. I Have many boxes Fire Police different cities etc. I will post some photos one of these days. to answer your question L.A. did not use lights as far as I know. As far as color, what ever was on the truck, blue, black, tan, gray you name it.

the house was demolished by J. Paul Getty in 1957 to make way for his Getty Oil headquarters. Now it is the glumly nondescript Harbor Building.

all interior scenes from the movie were actually filmed on location inside the house.

the swimming pool was built for this movie, and was in fact a non-working swimming pool, as it was not equipped with any filtration system.

i wish you all the best on your upcoming eye surgery

Sorry for dragging up an old post but I was looking at the site of the Sunset Blvd house on Google earlier and I noticed a plot of empty land on the adjacent site fronting Wilshere, thinking there may have been something demolished here I checked through the thread and wouldnt you know it the vacant plot is shown in the 1930 aerial quoted here, the 1934 one shows it shrouded in trees

Is this a rare occurance to have such a prominent site on such a major thoroughfare empty like this all this time? Is it a park? it doesnt look like it

In fact I can just see a for Sale sign on it, Sunset Blvd house used to stand on the left
