Immigration Dept to take over MM2H programme from October

KUALA LUMPUR: All new applications for the Malaysia My Second Home Programme (MM2H) will be handled and processed by the Immigration Department (JIM) beginning October, after all the related legal processes are completed.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) in a statement said in the transition process, the ministry through the MM2H Centre would handle matters related to the existing participants until Sept 15 this year.

"When this period is over, the processing of existing applications and logistics matters will be taken over completely by JIM," read the statement.

MOTAC will continue to play its role in promoting MM2H through Tourism Malaysia's involvement and introducing the country as a long-term stay destination especially for retirees and high-income personalities, it added.

The ministry will also continue to support the MM2H programme to help the country's economic growth as well as promote Malaysia at the international stage.

Pangkor Island tourism operators excited to receive visitors in November

PANGKOR (Sept 13): The majority of accommodation operators on Pangkor Island are ready to receive an influx of tourists through the green travel bubble in November.

One of them, Asmadi Teh, 58, who operates a hotel in Pasir Bogak, said that he is prepared, even if the resort island is to be reopened sooner than the mentioned date, after more than a year of not receiving tourists.

“However, in principle, we agree with the government’s decision to reopen Pangkor Island in November and we can make better preparations to receive an influx of tourists from all over the country.

“Even though November is considered late, but let it be slow and safe. After all, we are aware that Manjung district still has an area placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO),” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

Meanwhile, another hotel operator, Mohd Zamzuri Sui, 52, said that the reopening of Pangkor Island under the travel bubble in November is very appropriate, as the popular destination is expected to be better prepared by then as it is likely to receive more than three times the number of tourists than usual.

Mohd Zamzuri said since Perak transitioned to Phase Two of the National Recovery Plan (PPN), which allowed individuals who had completed vaccinations to travel interdistrict, people in Pangkor Island had made initial preparations after the island started to receive domestic tourists, and the number was increasing from time to time.

“With the arrival of tourists at this time, we can make preparations bit by bit and make appropriate improvements to ensure all standard operating procedures (SOPs) are complied with in every hotel and chalet, especially in November, because the number of tourists is expected to increase by then.

“Several hotel operators are also expected to be ready to operate on Sept 16 for domestic tourists, but are still waiting for permission from the authorities to be allowed to do so,” said Mohd Zamzuri who is also the chairman of the Pangkor Island Hotel and Resort Development Association.

Yesterday, the State Housing, Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman, Datuk Nolee Ashilin Mohammed Radzi, announced the reopening of Pangkor Island to visitors on Nov 1, based on the green travel bubble.

However, Nolee said the decision to reopen the island is subject to the approval of the National Security Council (MKN), after all information, requirements and standard operating procedures (SOPs) have been tabled by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (MOTAC).

Langkawi to serve as benchmark for opening more travel bubbles — minister

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 13): The travel bubble initiative which will be implemented in Langkawi from Sept 16 will serve as a benchmark for opening more tourist destinations in the country.

In this regard, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri advised those who are planning to travel to Langkawi for a holiday to be responsible tourists and follow the prescribed standard operating procedures (SOPs) because their action will determine the fate of the country's tourism sector.

“We want to see how [the reopening of] Langkawi will impact the entire economic sector, especially the tourism sector.

"This will be a model of our [travel] bubble. We want and we hope Langkawi will be a good model to enable us to open more [travel] bubbles," she said at a press conference in the Parliament Building today.

Nancy stressed that all parties should comply with the set SOPs, among which tourists are required to use transport services provided by travel agencies if they are travelling by land.

Nancy said there are proposals from the private sector to set up a centre for conducting swab tests for tourists going to Langkawi.

“It is a very good initiative, although it is not compulsory for individuals to go for swab tests … I have asked them to speak to LADA (the Langkawi Development Authority) and I hope they can work together,” she added.

KOTA KINABALU (Sept 19): All Sabah Parks stations and offices (TTS), including climbing activities to the summit of Mount Kinabalu, have been reopened to the public since Sept 16, says Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin.

He said the areas around the Turtle Island Park in Sandakan and Bohey Dulang Island in Semporna, as well as the Ulu Kimanis sub-station, will commence operations Monday (Sept 20).

“However, the reopening of the park is subject to the stipulated rules, as only visitors who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 will be allowed in.

“Domestic tourists from the same district, as well as civil servants aged above 12 and under 70 are also allowed,” he said in a statement today.

Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the destinations are Genting Highlands, Pulau Tioman and Melaka, and the proposal was approved in the Covid-19 Ministerial Quartet meeting today.

“Today, we approved three more destinations (Genting Highlands, Pulau Tioman and Melaka), and they will be brought to the special meeting [of the Special Committee on Tackling Covid-19] tomorrow,” she told a media conference after the Covid-19 Ministerial Quartet meeting in the Parliament building here today.

The second meeting was chaired by Senior Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and was attended by Nancy as well as Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

Nancy said the travel standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the three destinations would be studied, especially the entry SOPs into Melaka, which has a wide area of coverage, while industry players in the three destinations were told to be ready to receive visitors.

On the development of the Pulau Langkawi pilot project from Sept 16 to 19, she said 6,662 tourists entered the island by air, with 3,483 more via ferry.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Faizal said that in the meeting, his ministry proposed the reopening of stadiums to spectators for tournaments such as football and other suitable sports.

“It is also to celebrate the Malaysia Cup, which will be starting soon, and all SOPs would be studied and have to be complied with, in line with the concept of reopening safety,” he said.

Last Friday, gymnasiums and bowling alleys were allowed to open under Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan (PPN) with stringent SOPs.

They included guidelines on ventilation as most gymnasiums are indoor, which could raise the risk of Covid-19 infection.

In this regard, Hishammuddin said the latest sports sector relaxation took into consideration the well-being of the people from the mental aspect and needs of gymnasium operators.
