Tovanger2, you deserve the credit for resurrecting this wonderful conversation about the beloved Arcade Palm.
Kudos to you!

On the trail of the San Pedro palms

I've been searching online newspaper archives for any articles about the Arcade palm's move in 1914. Look what I found about one of its siblings:

Los Angeles Herald, Volume XL, Number 2, 13 April 1893:

California Digital Newspaper Collection

I assume this would be the southernmost of the 4 palms along the wall. Now, to find out whether they actually did ship it to Chicago...

Thank you PM, what a thrilling development! And an A L Bath mention too :-)

"A century old palm"? Maybe half a century. LOL

This one claims the palm was 127 years old!:

Hmmm, the pic here does not show a fan palm, although it's flanked by a pair:

Oh, the old palm was from San Diego. Bummer:

A couple more for tonight - from the same database:

A brief mention of the Arcade palm in an article about moving big trees, from the Los Angeles Herald, Volume XXVIII, Number 13, 14 October 1900:

"About ten years ago the giant palm standing in front of the Arcade station was moved there at a cost of $250. Since the palm has been in this isolated position it has been unfruitful."

"Notes" column, Los Angeles Herald, Volume 40, Number 108, 28 July 1893:

"A team attached to a hack ran away at the Arcade depot yesterday and collided with the iron fence surrounding the big palm tree. The hack was overturned and the driver was thrown from his box but he pluckily caught the horses and held them, while an athletic young man, one of the train dispatchers, assisted the people in the carriage, three, a little girl and a man, out of their perilous position through the window."

Good thing that fence was there!

They flower in the Spring and are usually but not always, separately male and female trees. To determine the sex, you have to see the flowers up close when they're in bloom. I haven't done that yet. ;)

CBD, if the photo immediately below was taken in 1886, when do you think the next, earlier photo of the same trees was taken?

Having grown up with the Lang Oak as a reference point, I'm still dumbfounded I didn't know until now about the continued existence of this palm.

So many photos on this thread depict banners hung from government buildings and street overhangs suggesting a celebration or the city fathers liked to make LA look like it was a perpetual party town or advertising friendly. I suspect photographers were more inclined to remove their lens caps when colorful banners were present. In the banner-laden photos above, what was the city celebrating? (Seems like the early '20s at the latest, which would suggest this is not Frank Shaw's b'day.)

Hopefully they'll take a cue from their next door neighbor, Clifton's Cafeteria, and tear off that 1960s/70s 'modern' facade.
