Here's an interesting 1970s slide of the J.J. Newberry store on the corner of Broadway and. . .umm. . . 5th Street?

I believe that's a cream colored Javelin going through the intersection.

Here is a group of photographs I found a few months ago on eBay.

As they appeared on eBay.

As you can see, the top two photographs show an accident between a milk truck and a trolley.

Here's a closer look.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/Bm1ep7.jpg

Does anyone recognize this intersection? ...My guess is the corner of S. Central and 8th Street. because the large building reminds me of the Bank of America that stood on the southwest corner.

Ojai Valley

As you can see - most of the land is devoted to orchards.

Why, pray-tell, is this car called a Waffle Iron.

Actually, I think that's the 1980s, judging by the Cadillac on the left, and that van's license plate; prior to 1980, California plates only had 6 characters, and beginning in 1980, they had 7 characters. My guess is that this is the mid-1980s.

And I think that's a cream-colored 'stang from the early 1970s...

I always enjoyed the New-View Theatre. I saw GWTW for fifty cents there in the early 1960s. In those days, only older movies or recent, but not new movies, were shown. It had the simplest decor of any theater. Very small lobby with a basic concession stand. When you entered the theater itself, there was one aisle down the right side and all seats were on the left. I asked my mother about it later and she said it was originally a newsreel theater that showed continuous newsreels. No show times; just give the cashier your nickel and find a seat and watch the newsreels until you had enough. TV changed all that and the News-View became the New-View. (and GWTW was finally shown to home audiences for free)

The Orange Julius stand (and another next to the Admiral Theatre) were always a treat. I bought many original 8x10 glossies from Larry Edmond's in those days. But best of all was Cherokee Books in the Cherokee Building, where I picked up many old Batman and Superman comics for five cents. And God bless Harry and Gene, the original owners and booksellers

I was going to say the same thing, but the caddy also looks like a deville body style which was produced from the late 70's to the late 80's, but it also looks like the smaller boxy Sedan DeVille that came out in the mid 80's. The plates might be the sunset plates of the late 80's (we had a set on our family VW Rabbit which i always enjoyed looking at as a kid), or out of state plates.

Still lots of orchards, more houses now than in photo of course here in Ojai. The Waffle Iron could be named because of the grill or it could be a slang word for an electric car...

Without getting too deep this late, I think you could be right, e-r. LARy's B Line ran through DTLA on Macy St., Main St., E. 12th St. and Hooper Ave. However, I don't see passengers aboard, which could mean that the car was using non-revenue trackage on this part of Central Ave. to pull in or out of Division 1 Car House at 7th and Central. We have at least some plausibility and no knockout factors that I can see.

Looks like there's a service station at the right edge of the photo, if that's any help.

ER....I don't recall if there was a basement for public use ...doubtful.
:shrug:But there probably was one for storage.

The entire flavor of the Civic Center has changed. Its now lots of Latino and Asian stores at the sidewalk level.

This reminds me of the SQR store in DT Anaheim, demolished in 1978 for one of the worst redevelopment projects in So Cal history. Very nondescript building from the outside, but one of those places you could find anything. I bought a "friendship" ring for my first junior high crushes there. But the coolest thing was the pneumatic tubes that took your money and a receipt from the sales floor to the mezzanine, where cashiers made change and sent it back. So cool!

If the van had a commercial plate, those had 7 characters starting in the mid-70s, IIRC. Format was 1X#####, where X = a letter other than I, O or Q and # = numbers (0-9) (eg 1G28568)

Hey, BDiH, :) did you ever visit the New-View Theatre when it became The Pussycat Theatre in 1973? :runaway:

(For reasons I don't know, in the Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood movie set in 1969, this location was recreated as the Pussycat, not the New-View.

Martin Pal Apr 16, 2020 9:29 PM

:previous:

I had read a blurb about the theatre becoming the Pussycat in 1973. Here's what the Los Angeles Theatres blogspot has to say about that:

Pacific Theatres was the operator of the New-View in the 60s and early 70s.

It once had an infamous nightclub, Masque, in the basement. There was occasional soft core porn film in the early 70s. One booking featured winners from the 1973 New York X-Rated Film Festival. At other times it played decent double features or triple feature action bills. Pacific was running it into mid-November 1974 at which time it started running serious porno as an independent operation. That only lasted a couple weeks.

By the end of November 1974 it had become part of the Pussycat chain but still was called the New-View. It didn't get renamed the Pussycat Theatre until the following spring. The permit to install new signage and remodel the facade was issued in March 1975.

Two mystery homes. . .

Photographer's stamp

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...921/WHZTWz.jpg
detail

I figured the 426 Downey Ave. address was the photographer's address since it's written directly below his stamp. . .

but around the time this stereoview was taken (1890s) Lingfelter had a studio at 515 N. Main St.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/h56juz.jpg
LAPL

The plot thickens with the seller's description.

"426 Downey Ave.". Photographed by "(A.?) M. Lingfelter View Artist". There is a handwritten notation in the bottom left quadrant
of the back which reads "....E. L. A. Calif.". We believe that references East Los Angeles of which Downey avenue is a part,
to the best of our knowledge. Although the houses are not identified as to their residents, we think, that one of the homes,
possibly the one on the right, was the home of the photographer. The home on the right we believe is still standing;
we do not know the fate of the other home. We date the stereoview to circa 1910."
....(I think 1910 is a bit late)

I haven't been able to find the house that the seller thinks is still standing.

J. M. Lingfelter appears in numerous other city directories. . .nearly all of them at different addresses.
