Rainbow Studios

The dark, two story building below Capitol Records was Rainbow Studios, a rehearsal and recording studio where many song writers plugged songs and famous singers recorded over the years.

A mystery location.

I thought the Richfield Service Station in this slide from 1954 might be the same station that was in the background of the Church Goin' Lady photograph....[it's not]

eBay

It appears that the photographer has climbed up on a roof to get this view of the Hollywood Sign.

I'm not sure what's going on with the building behind the station. It looks like the windows and doors are missing. (there might be a guy in green on a ladder)

I find the squarish gray building on the left intriguing for some reason. There's also an interesting apartment building at far right.

HERE'S THE HOUSE BEHIND THE STATION.

I've circled, what I believe to be, a man on a ladder. (or am I seeing things that aren't there)

This is an original slide so it is new to NLA.

This is Franklin between Carmen and Gower. The Richfield station was at 6100 Franklin. The large brick apartment in the middle-right is still there at 1975 N Beachwood Drive.

Also commenting on Paul's Kitchen on San Pedro Street. I was just there two weeks ago. Glad that I remembered to take cash. No cards accepted. And the tab can get a bit steep. A true journey back in time.

Can we have a little less of "The Ol' Gray Hoss" please - "The Middle-Aged Graying Hoss" is more accurate. ;)

No obvious CD listing.

I couldn't find any trace of the Hotel Lone Wolf. The video shows it to the southwest of Landmark Street...

Here is our mystery building, which the video identifies as "Back of the Hotel Lone Wolf". With its Tudor style, I did consider the Cotton Club as a possible location, but the front didn't match and the rear was very plain. It was located just off the top-right corner of the aerial above.

https://i809.photobucket.com/albums/...lLoneWolf3.jpg
Youtube

The Cotton Club is circled in blue in the view below which I've cropped from an image I found on John Bengtson's silentlocations.com. I think the mystery building may be the one I've arrowed in green. Although it falls outside the red Hal Roach Studios boundary, I think it was part of the studio. A 1920 image at hollywoodphotographs.com appears to show a barn-like structure there, while a 1921 image at hollywoodphotographs.com shows construction in progress. "Fast Company" came out in 1924.

https://i809.photobucket.com/albums/...lLoneWolf4.jpg
silentlocations.com/Bison Archives

As the first aerial above shows, the area was empty by 1928, so I'm guessing that it was just a set/façade. I'll have to see if it appeared in any other Hal Roach movies.

Thanks for substantiating my confusion. My first impression was that the depicted structure was not a set piece, but rather an existing edifice located at an entirely different location. A version of the "full" short is available (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7pAHm-Vb_c) but there does not appear to be any direct reference to "Lone Wolf." As an aside, "The Cocoanut Grove," is mentioned, which presumably refers to the then recently constructed Ambassador Hotel.

Tommy’s | Est. 1946
Eastside of LA

The Order: A double cheeseburger with pickles and a tomato slice....at the original location on Beverly. No place like it, anywhere.

CBD, not much has changed in this picture except, i think the white house is now a Taco Bell (it might still be there; where the Studebaker Lark is parked, might be the drive through area that i go through often, i'm just not too sure). The Richfield station is most likely the same building, its a "Hand" car wash now. The Tommy's stand is of course still open. From where the picture is taken is a"L" shaped new building where you can place your order, if the older stand is too crowded.

On trawling for items concerning the location of the Mission Cafe, of which I have a newly-acquired postcard, I found that its location 527 S. Spring Street had a quite diverse career. Here are some of the items I found, chronologically arranged:

Excellent post, odinthor. The interior of the cafe is wonderful.

I don't believe we have seen this building on NLA.

I would have remembered the replication of 'mission bells' at the top!

The white house is still there, the Taco Bell is where the cars are parked to the right of the the white house in the original pic. In addition to the white house every other house looking down Rampart is still there, the others having been replaced by apartment buildings.

There's been some changes over the years at this intersection of Rampart and Beverly.
The TACO BELL is catty-corner across Beverly from Tommy's.
This location is where the old Lark is parked. The white house is gone.

North, on Beverly, is a defunct bar with a Tommy's sign on it...Tommy's overflow parking is in back of this closed bar.

There appears to be two Tommy's on the old lot....the new L shaped building is a new kitchen, restrooms. office, storage and a service window. Open 24 hours.

This can be confusing because if you stand in the intersection there appears to be 3 Tommy's. Two at the original location and the sign on the closed bar.

Judging by the railing in the foreground, it looks like that photo was taken from the freeway. The Richfield station has been rechristened as an ARCO station.

The house in the photo above is at 107 S. Rampart. Its somewhat different than the white house by the Lark car in the photo I posted. The chimney is in a different location on the roof and the roof has two notches on the sides. Did someone change the shape of the roof and the location of the chimney?

In the photo I posted, the bus is on Beverly and the crossing street is Rampart. The ridge of Tommy's roof runs parallel to Rampart. This is unless someone moved the little building. So many mysteries.

Let's take a look down the street:

The other houses match up, with the houses in between replaced by apartments. The white house doesn't match with any of the other houses in your photo except the first house by the lot on the corner.

I would agree. This aerial shows the intersection as it is currently is configured. I believe the 107 S. Rampart house is still there. It is marked as "The California Boutique" here. There do appear to be slight changes to the chimney and roof but everything else matches. I believe the Taco Bell was built on the area where the Studebaker was parked. That may have been a vacant lot that was only used for parking. Unfortunately that corner lot is not completely visible in the old photo.

Here's a 1960 UCSB aerial that shows the intersection in the same orientation. My computer at home will not allow me to get decent resolution at a larger size. There appears to be enough room on that corner for the Taco Bell and No. 107.

The house near the Lark car and the house at 107 S. Rampart are two different houses. The other two houses with the arrows pointing at my photo are also different houses. None of the three match any house in my photo. The roofs are different, the windows don't match and the porches are out of sync.

The Spanish style house at 125 S. Rampart appears to be at the end corner of the block and there is no curb cut for a driveway. But when I look at 125, there's another house at the corner.

"Double Indemnity" trivia question

In the scene above the Hollywood Bowl, a symphony can be heard playing in the distance. I believe it is a Brahm's, but which one? My guess would be the 4th, but not sure. Any music experts out there? :koko:
