Not Wanger's noirish moment-- that would come later when he shot his next wife Joan Bennett's lover in the crotch (see post 2426)-- but interesting still:

For comparative purposes, my travel agent has Around-The-World cruises on Princess, among others.

A 111-day round-trip cruise from Los Angeles starts at $20,000 for an inside cabin, up to $40,000 (and beyond) for suites.

As most of you know, the old building on the southeast corner of 5th & Hill is the former Willoughby Hotel.

These ships were actually troop transports that morphed into civilian liners.

SS President Wilson was an American passenger ship originally ordered by the Maritime Commission (MC hull 687) during World War II, as one of the Admiral W. S. Benson-class Type P2-SE2-R1 transport ships, and intended to be named USS Admiral F.B. Upham (AP-128).
The ship was laid down on 27 November 1944 at the Bethlehem Steel shipyard in Alameda, California, but was cancelled on 16 December 1944. The ship was finally launched on 24 November 1947, completed and delivered to the Maritime Commission on 27 April 1948. Under the name SS President Wilson, she was bareboat chartered by the Maritime Commission to American President Lines.
She was sold to Oceanic Cruise Development, Inc. (C.Y. Tung Group) on 27 April 1973, and renamed Oriental Empress. Laid up at Hong Kong, the ship was eventually scrapped at Kaohsiung, Taiwan, in 1984.

Interesting, CBD. Before reading your post, I was looking at the brochure thinking it doesn't look like a typical passenger ship of the day. Those foremasts look more fit for a freighter, and passenger ships have a more pronounced rake bow to stern. The Pres. Wilson looks bulky for a cruise ship, nor very large. And you explained why!:worship:

Even though this second photograph has a different tint I think it's the same area because we're seeing the edge of the same building (far right above, far left below)

I believe that this is an inbound Watts Local car turning from E. 9th St. onto San Pedro St.

HenryHuntington Feb 14, 2016 5:30 AM

I should probably know what we're looking at here, but I can't place it at the moment.

We're looking outbound on the Hollywood Freeway, with the photo apparently having been taken from the Rosemont Ave. overcrossing. Until I can make Google Maps behave, I can't help with the other questions.

CityBoyDoug Feb 14, 2016 5:31 AM

Great photos ER of old Japan and some more of Moscow 1960s.

Well, its not a built specific cruise ship. Its a government troop ship to carry soldiers to foreign ports where needed in a war.

It was refurbished as a liner and used for tourists after WW II.

Yes, its not really glamorous is it.

Martin Pal posted;

Okay, I'm confused:
What year is the route map from? I take Public Transit frequently and I don't recognize any of those numbers on it as bus lines on the lines I'm familiar with. (This has #42 on Sunset Blvd.? #217 has been on Fairfax Ave. as long as I can remember etc., for example. Before many lines were renumbered in the early '80's.)

It also doesn't seem to jive with this "Discontinued RTD/MTA Lines" page on wiki, which has bus line #42:

42/42A - Martin Luther King Jr., Boulevard - Stocker Street - La Tijera Boulevard
Line 42/42A was cancelled in June 2012; replaced by Lines 40, 102 and the Metro Expo Line. Line 42A was a short line route while line 42 was a regular line.

This page has all the stops listed:
http://www.lifeinus.com/Transportati...fm?RouteID=593

IIRC (without looking it up, as its getting past my bedtime), the Fairfax Ave. line was designated Line 83 by Los Angeles Motor Coach in the 1930s and remained so until the early 1980s renumbering by SCRTD. The bus stops wiki appears to have been based on the post-renumbering line designations. Best I can do for now.

Work with me here, I might well have made a mistake in triangulation...

Our other clue is that the Norton Building (601-07 S. Broadway) appears at the left of the first photo, so I think we'd have to be looking due east on 6th St. (from the north side of the street) to get the Eastern Columbia building to be on our right. We have to be on the north side of 6th St. to get the viewing angle of the Norton Building to expose the west wall with the signage, presumably facing Lindley Pl. and the rear of the Los Angeles Theater.

Except that...

- The west wall of the Norton Building doesn't look to me as though it has the correct height or window placement to accommodate the signage we see; and

- I think our viewpoint would have to be the top of the Pacific Mutual Building, because Pershing Square takes up the block between Hill and Olive Sts.; and

- A quick check on Google Earth suggests that the only rooftop parking in the neighborhood is at 625 S. Hill St., but the garage is much too new and the viewing angle is toward St. Vincent Ct. instead of 6th St.; and

- Finally, the extant buildings on the south side of 6th St. (between us and the Norton Building signs) don't seem to resemble the ones in the photograph.

Not sure what I'm missing, but it must be a lot!
