I would say the same person wrote both. With the Busch Gardens example, the writer appears to be tired or under the weather for some reason. Plus the pen
seems to be low on ink. |

I thought the contraption in the Calgrove Kennel photograph was a complete vehicle with three wheels like a Dymaxion Car. (I didn't realized it was just the front part) Hmm, maybe the 'deco' columns were from this Batman movie (just a guess) Quote:
And yes, the vehicle I remember was the land rover thingy from Damation Alley. (I've never seen the actual film) Here's how I remember it....in the Jeffries' parking lot on Cahuenga Blvd. West https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/1aauAs.jpg Robert Jackson and in action..... https://imageshack.com/a/img923/8913/ENNnbx.gif I didn't realize this vehicle was in two sections. [do you think it had two drivers? one for the front / one for the back __ |

Flyingwedge, excellent post on Whitley Heights before the Hollywood Freeway
Especially intriguing was the beautiful home within the green box. The one that can be seen in the postcard of Valentino's house at 6776 Wedgewood Place. While seeking more information on the 'green box' house I happened upon a slew of photograph's of Villa Valentino (6776 Wedgewood Place) when it was owned by the founder of Maybelline, Thomas Lyle Williams https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/8jGkoX.jpg Thomas Lyle Williams in 1934. First, some background: "Built in 1922, this beautiful little hillside Italian villa was purchased by silent film-era heartthrob Rudolph Valentino. It was the first nice home Valentino had purchased for himself in Los Angeles, specifically in the then-secluded and exclusive hilltop neighborhood of Whitley Heights in Hollywood. The address of the home was 6776 Wedgewood Place. The top level of the home featured a one-car garage, courtyard, small living area in the entryway, and 2 bedrooms with baths. The lower level featured the main living room, dining room, kitchen, and servant's quarters." [WIKIMAPIA The following photographs are from the Maybelline Story https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/tV71Y6.jpg The arrow points to Villa Valentino in 1935. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/iAxFAY.jpg Tom Lyle Williams remodeled the Villa Valentino in 1937. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/9ewP9V.jpg Tom Lyle Williams on the left, followed by his sister Mabel, her husband Chet Hewes, and his sister Eva and her husband Ches Haines. "Aspiration at the Villa Valentino, Tom Lyle's home in the Hollywood Hills. I believe Tom Lyle, was a major contributor, paying for the statue to be set in De Longpre Park, in 1930. He bought the Villa, placed a copy of Aspiration in a fountain and called his home, The Villa Valentino. Aspiration is still in our family and we love his inspiration to aspire up and never look down." https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/NwXAwf.jpg Tom Lyle with his nephew Bill Williams by the pool at Villa Valentino. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/n9RPZL.jpg Bill, Tom Lyle and Evelyn Williams. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/0yMcaO.jpg Tom Lyle on the diving board with various guests around the pool. (I couldn't decide which one to use) so you get both https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/g8N75f.jpg Remodeled Villa Valentino in 1945. Tom Lyle in the swim trunks with his sisters (I think) and Emery(?) letter excerpt: An excerpt from a letter written by Emery Shaver dated Tuesday, August 27, 1946 to his sister Betty Cardell. (mentions the highway :() "The Villa is all spruced up and looks more beautiful than ever. We have a new houseman now, a Swedish fellow, and he is very neat and clean, as well as a very good cook, so the future looks bright for a while. Don't know how long we have to enjoy the Villa, as the highway I spoke of some time ago is now definitely set to come through our property, but whether this year or next is not yet revealed. It seems such a pity when we have worked so hard to get everything here just as we like it. Don't know where we will go, but possibly to Laguna Beach or La Jolla, towns south of here, on the sea." __ Special thanks to the Maybelline Story |

Maybelline makeup has an interesting history. I've read about and learned how it started. Its beginnings were all about eyebrows, eyelashes and Hollywood movie stars. ER....those are fun photos you posted. Its an intriguing look into the lives of the founding family. I asked my sister about the Maybelline cosmetics. She laughed and said "second-tier products for Target stores....no sophisticated woman would ever buy Maybelline". |

Those later photos of 6776 Wedgewood Place are very interesting, e_r. It looks like it was a great house and property. It's a shame it was demolished. Is this looking through the windows just above and to the right of the people in the pic above?: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psk7pnwuss.jpg Sep 7, 1951, Los Angeles Times @ ProQuest via LAPL The house in the green box turned out to be 6787 Whitley Terrace: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psxh5rpplq.jpg Previously posted by me It had a brief claim to fame: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...pswi3xjqxv.jpg Sep 7, 1951, Los Angeles Times @ ProQuest via LAPL The building permit for 6787 Whitley Terrace was issued exactly 30 years to the day before the story about its imminent demise ran in the Times: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psw9odxgdn.jpg LADBS Here is the story that accompanied the two September 7, 1951, Los Angeles Times photos above, although the part about 6787 being built by a "wealthy woman from the Middle West" doesn't match the building permit: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...d.jpg~original http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2nraohhb.jpg ProQuest via LAPL |

FW, thanks so much for the information on the 'green box' house, 6787 Whitley Terrace. So it was the last to go. (color me SAD) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/3...924/1miiHL.jpg FLYINGWEDGE |
FW, that Maybelline Blog was all over the place.
It was a bit difficult to follow....and place the Villa Valentino pics in some kind of order. It was mentioned (a couple of times) that the foundation of the Villa Valentino was left in place, and that you can see it from the freeway. Do you think this is true? I'm still trying to figure it out [via the google-mobile] but I'm not sure if I'm looking in the right place. ___ Here is the actual comment (one of them, anyway) ""Today if you are on the Hollywood freeway near Vine, look up to your right and you will still see the foundation of the Villa Valentino. Tom Lyle Williams and his partner, Emery Shaver moved to Bel Air California and built a modern glass and steel home." MAYBELLINE STORY __ |

The video starts at the corner of Sunset and La Brea, heading north up La Brea past Lanewood Ave, Hawthorne Ave, Hollywood Blvd, and finally, Yucca St. In the entire clip, I could find only three(!) buildings that are still standing. The "Harness Racing" building on the right is currently a gym: https://i.imgur.com/Nn5lz6h.jpgGSV The building at 1645 N. La Brea is still a liquor store: https://i.imgur.com/SHx9s8A.jpgGSV And the building on the left is still a motel: https://i.imgur.com/QUbb6We.jpgGSV Notice that La Brea was widened at some point, the street taking over the sidewalk area where the shrubbery used to be. |

Here are 6776 Wedgewood Place (red dot) and 6787 Whitley Terrace (blue dot) on the April 1921 Sanborn: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psyzqzkpsl.jpg ProQuest via LAPL This aerial photo, with 6776 circled in red and 6787 in blue, was taken between May 22 and July 28, 1938. Since 6776 had a large back yard, perhaps the next lot down the hill -- outside the circle -- was acquired?: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psvpleuj6v.jpg Flight AXJ_1938, Frame 24-110 @ UCSB The lots where 6776 Wedgewood Place (red dot) and 6787 Whitley Terrace (blue dot) stood appear in The New Los Angeles Plat Book (1958), although both homes were demolished by 1958: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psyjlven3v.jpg USCDL I can't relocate where I found this information, but I recently read that souvenir hunters used to comb the hillside above the 101 for pieces of Villa Valentino until CalTrans built a sound wall above the freeway. I think 6776 Wedgewood would have been about here; maybe that wall to the left of the sign at the edge of the freeway was part of the property? http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psxhkjyp4s.jpg |

Tom Lyle Williams and his partner, Emery Shaver moved to Bel Air California and built a modern glass and steel home." MAYBELLINE STORY
On a side note: Remember that Rudy had another later home he called Falcon Lair. He lived there for about a year... when he tragically died. This was from 1925 till his passing in 1926. Falcon Lair was his home. above Benedict Canyon in Bel Air, Los Angeles. The estate was built in 1925 by Rudolph Valentino, who named it Falcon Lair after his unproduced film, The Hooded Falcon. It is better known as a residence of heiress Doris Duke from 1952 until 1998. Ref. article below>>>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcon_Lair This is his later and final home....Falcon Lair. I think some people get his two homes mixed up, as they look similar. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...63df907860.jpg https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...63df907860.jpg Rudy loved animals. https://i.pinimg.com/564x/d0/2c/14/d...7c0ab96d6c.jpg https://i.pinimg.com/564x/d0/2c/14/d...7c0ab96d6c.jpg |

nearby hill just south of the Hollywood Bowl. Below the blue dot is the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood at Gower and Carlos, and below the red dot are the Hollywood Tower Apartments at Franklin and Vista Del Mar (the Hollywood Freeway now runs between them). Above the green dot is Whitley Terrace; Wedgewood Place and Milner Road end at Whitley Terrace on the left and right, respectively. We're looking east: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...s.jpg~original Islandora/UCLA This is such a wonderful photo of Whitley Heights, or Whitley Hill, as my family called it. My mother and grandparents lived at 6630 Whitley Terrace in the late 1930s. The home is still there and I drive by now and then to see it. In the early 1940s they lived at 2307 Fairfield. Their home was eventually razed to build the Hollywood Freeway. In the early 1960s, we lived on Whitley Avenue and I remember our mailman telling me stories about delivering mail to Valentino on Wedgewood. He said Rudy was always under one of his cars, likely his Voisin. I have b&w still photos and color home movies of those addresses, which I hope to go through one of these days. |
