Fun post Tour....Cadillacs are very noir LA

A friend of mine in Texas loves Cadillacs. When he was in the mood for a newer one he used to hit up all the mortuaries for their used Cadillacs.
I like them also but the repairs-maintenance on such a brand is costly here in Los Angeles.

The subject of early '60s Cadillacs is right up my alley. Here's my 1963 Caddy convertible that I've owned since 1989. Very similar design to the '64s seen here recently. I just finished restoring it for the second time and don't have any real glamour shots yet.

Here's an interesting tidbit about the last day of the fair.

"Amid a crash of noise, the Pacific Southwest Exposition closed its doors here after a thirty nine day run,
but the noise was not the blare of horns and shouting of a joyous people such as often is associated with similar events,
The noise was the collapse of the dome of the Fine Arts building almost within the final closing hour of the exposition,
and as the wreckage was cleared away four persons were found prostrate beneath thousands of pounds of timber,
plaster and damaged artwork (the severely injured were taken to Seaside Hospital)
Later that night, despite the collapse, the crowd enjoyed a moonlight Mardi Gras.
At midnight, the lights of the exposition went out for the final time." kcet

After a preliminary investigation …, the exposition officials agreed the collapse was due to a settling of earth beneath the building
and it was indicated no effort would be made to fix blame, the accident being viewed as an “unfortunate circumstance” and “unavoidable.”

To say something positive about the late, un-lamented GM Vega, it did have one excellent component--the steering box.

Simple, small, bulletproof, and cheap. It turned out to be a favorite choice of hot rodders. Vega boxes are currently turning the front wheels of thousands of rides around the world. I had one on my '31 Ford A hiboy.

OMG, I can't believe it. The building at the right side is a private church grade school that I attended for one semester in 3rd Grade. My teacher was Mrs Toplift....of all strange names. The Principal was a rather stern terror of a woman...Mrs Murphy. She had 2 smart aleck sons who also attended. Those 2 boys always reeked of Sen~Sen....a licorice mint., ugh.

Thanks BRR for the pictures and follow on. My family, except for my grandmother, did not attend this church as such. I only went to their school because of half-day public schools at that time. My parents wanted me in school all day. I went back to public school the next year.

The two things that stick in my brain are my everyday cold cheese sandwiches my mom made for my lunch and the frozen outdoor drinking fountains. It must have been a very cold winter that year.

Those tiny black Sen~Sen mints were an abomination if you've ever had the misfortune to taste or smell.

When I was six or seven years old, Sen-Sen was frequently the butt of jokes on the Bob Hope show (a family favorite). Etched in my memory is a business trip to Reno where the family came along. We went into the lobby of the Riverside Hotel and there on the counter was a Sen-Sen display. I kicked up a fuss in aid of getting one. My mother knew how to deal with that -- she bought a box (I think they were a penny) and handed me one. It was the worst tasting thing I have ever encountered. Later I found out they were aimed at covering the smell of alcohol on your breath, which made those Bob Hope jokes make a lot more sense.

BRR, have you thought of posting fewer than 30 huge pictures at a time? A little overwhelming for one post--one or two at a time might have more impact. Just a thought.
