I'm beginning to think the Noirishers* need their own official Order of Merit.
(*or is it Noirishians? Noirishists? Noirishonians?) |
Forgot to post these yesterday...Vampira cruising around the city, 1954.

Wow, I love the tire tower; went up in 1928 and was demolished in 1960. It's by Armand Monaco, who is mostly known for Italiante Villas like this one, but this Deco tower reminds one of Monaco's early version of the People's National Bank on Hill St (later designed in a different version by Walker & Eisen). https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1470/...56fbe1aa_o.pngfrom this post |

I like those prices! |
. A day late, but here's THE PUMPKIN PALACE: http://wesclark.com/burbank/pumpkin_3.jpgDept. Water & Power Caption: View showing the Pumpkin Palace located at 3611 Magnolia Boulevard near Hollywood Way, in Burbank. (1927.) At some point it was called The Studio Club. Not sure I'd want to tangle with that one owner. https://waterandpower.org/B%20Histor...tudio_Club.jpgDept. Water & Power From the site: The Pumpkin Building would wear many hats throughout its existence. It started out as at least two nightclubs in the 1920's (Pumpkin Palace and Studio Club), later a church called Valley Gospel, an inn called the Pumpkin Inn, a real estate office called Stan Summeril Real Estate, and later a hardware store (Magnolia Park Hardware). |

Thanks for finding that info Beaudry! Since the motel was there until 1994, I must have seen it, but have no recollection of it. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....1175qeAmaL.jpg In its 45 years there was more than one owner. This particular incarnation of the place (above postcard) used the Orange address as stated on the back: Sunset-Orange Motel Hollywood, California 1501 North Orange Drive, corner of 7000 Sunset Boulevard --- Ultra Modern 24 unit motel - Air Conditioned - TV - Radios - Center of Hollywood |

Until you actually sample the goods? Doesn't look like much thought went into climate control. On the other hand, it may have been a mild season. :shhh: |

mystery house on hilltop
Perhaps we've seen this before....but I don't recall seeing it before.
What caught my eye is the large, and impressive, house on the hill. The description on the cabinet card is rather vague... "Lincoln Heights near L.A. High School." https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/5yvawv.jpg OAC If we have seen this before...refresh my memory. Who belongs to that house on the hill? [who built it?] It's really quite unique; especially the mansard-like roof in the back. Here's a closer-look. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/DgyUt4.jpg for search purposes: Lincoln Heights near L.A. High School. C.C. Pierce |

Here's another photograph from the same group of cabinet cards.
We have probably seen this one before (a loooooong time ago), but I have a couple questions I'd like to ask. (of course ;)) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/Rwy5ok.jpg See it BIG here > > UC Berkeley/OAC L.A.'s first street-car #1 Why is the horse in the cart. (or is it a donkey?) & I just noticed the mane(s)...are there two horses? If so, are they BOTH in the cart..or just one? It's really weird. It looks like two horse heads on one horse body) (Is the horse/donkey getting new shoes?) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/Jpvxu8.jpg detail / I don't think the donkey/horse has to be in a cart to get new shoes. I'm not entirely sure what it says on the cart. #2 Do you think we're good enough sleuths now to figure out the location? (the best clue, as far as I can see, is the doctor's name) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/BNeriT.jpg I tried to find the location but was unsuccessful. Admittedly, it was a quick search. I realize my #1 question turned into 5 sub-questions.. but whatcha gonna do... |

https://i.postimg.cc/FzgkQSxc/Mystery2018110101.pngvia Frame Finder There is a large house in the circle that has elements that match ER's photo, however looking at the 1921 Baist map of the area shows no house: https://i.postimg.cc/MK3VZ7Sb/Mystery2018110103.png1921 Baist Now ER's photo is older than 1921 and there's a house, the aerial is 1927 and it shows a house with similar features. Here's the current view from Google Maps: https://i.postimg.cc/zvjvQrJF/Mystery2018110102.pngGoogle Maps I believe the photo was taken at Broadway and Gates looking at the house on the hill to the northeast. But the Baist Survey only shows small houses...my brain hurts. (After seeing Flyingwedge's post...) "Missed it by that much..." |

If I'm interpreting the information on that photo at oldhomesoflosangeles correctly, the house was built by the Baron and Baroness Rogniat, and it burned in 1894. William Woolwine then built a home on the property, before the original Lincoln HS campus subsequently was built on the site, now the NE corner of North Broadway and Lincoln Park Avenue. __________ I just found another view of the Rogniat home (at right), c. 1890. The information with this photo says the Rogniat home burned May 18, 1891*: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...psme5goybq.jpg ebay * The fire was actually on the 17th. |

A. E. CRONENWETT LEADING JEWELLER MONROVIA USA A possible Doctor Percival location. https://i.imgur.com/ZiGPxv8.jpg rescarta.lapl.org Although the date for the listing is later, it's in the right vicinity for the first horse drawn street railway. "On July 1, 1874, the modest, horse-drawn cars of the Spring and Sixth Street Railroad became the first streetcars to roll down Los Angeles streets. Founded by lawyer Robert M. Widney, the Spring & Sixth operated a regular schedule, running cars hourly on weekdays between 6:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. For a ten-cent fare, passengers could ride the one-and-a-half-mile route from the intersection of Temple and Spring south to Sixth, and then west to Figueroa." kcet.org  |
Twilight over Los Angeles.
Shot in 8K (4320P). My video card can barely handle 4K (2160P) and can only display 1080P. Good luck. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb1NvPIhssk |
