:previous: Great find, Hoss. When I first happened upon the eBay photo of the 3 G Distillery I thought it was mislabeled.






But now I find myself confused:...The following quote is from an article at KCET ..."Lockheed opened its operations in February 1928 with 50 employees."....... 1928! quelle surprise


and this aerial, from the same article, is dated January 1, 1928.

The article implies this is the early Lockheed Plant. (there is no mention of the distillery)

So are we looking at the 3 G Distillery or the Lockheed Plant? :shrug:

Here's a wider view of the 1928 aerial that KCET used (full resolution at link below the image). I've marked the future site of the distillery with the red box. The first Lockheed buildings were a few blocks to the south-east. The diamond-shaped park in the center at the bottom is still there - it's now known as Vickroy Park.

Ten years later, this is a wider view from the 1938 aerial that I posted yesterday. On the left is an early layout of what-is-now Hollywood Burbank Airport. At the time it would've been the Union Air Terminal. I can only see one plane there. There's also a drive-in theater below the distillery, with a whole block to itself. It survived until at least 1972, but was gone by 1977.

The distillery is about a mile to the northwest. Empire is the street at the top of your photo.

This Thomas Guide Map of Lockheed after WWII shows how the area grew. Where it says "To Palmdale" on this map is where the Distillery/Lockheed P-38 addition was located.

Great film! I knew about "Eat in the Hat" (Brown Derby) but I never knew about the Hardware Store in the Pumpkin.

My mother used to work at Lockheed in the 1960s. Most of their Burbank operations, including the headquarters buildings were located adjacent to the Hollywood Burbank airport (Bob Hope AP, originally known as Lockheed Field or Airport) on the left side of the pic, near Hollywood Way and Vanowen. Some operations were east of Hollywood Way as you show. Now Lockheed is long gone from Burb.

It's from an article about Klein-Simpson which also says:

"The company was originally two separate entities. Frank Simpson, a native of New York, operated a fruit company under his own name from about 1890 to 1910, and the firm was considered one of the largest produce and fruit businesses on the West Coast, according to a 1911 isue [sic] of California Fruit News.

Meantime, Arthur Klein, who hailed from Hungary, began his fruit retail and wholesale business on the historic Plaza about 1893. As the industrial area to the southeast expanded, Klein moved his operation to Ninth and Los Angeles streets by the end of the century.

The Simpson firm was one of the prime movers in the establishment of the Los Angeles Public Market Company, which built a large commercial structure on East Sixth Street near Alameda Street. A City of Los Angeles historic resources report also indicated that the Frank Simpson Fruit Company was instrumental in the creation of another public market at 9th and San Pedro streets. This was a massive six-acre project called the City Market of Los Angeles spanning from 9th to 11th and from San Pedro to San Julian and the facility exists today more than a century later."

The 1911 CD lists the address as "cor Produce and Mill", but by 1912 it's become "1338-1360 Produce". It then contracts to "1442-1360 Produce" before changing to "750 Market ct" in 1918.

As you can see, the hotel entrance is actually on Selma and not Wilcox.

I'm skeptical about 9th and San Pedro based on the gasometer in the background. Klein Simpson was at Mill and Produce in the teens and in the 20's at 750 Market. I'm favoring the Mill and Produce location, the gasometer would be in the right location.
