Just north of St Louis, MO is the nearly empty Jamestown Mall:

I found this "gated" (?) community in Lima. I guess they really don't want any through traffic.

That's different. I wonder how common that is.

I never did make it to Sioux City when I visited Iowa four years ago. So I decided to check it out on goolge maps. Here's an neighborhood just outside downtown. A little rough around the edges, but that's the kind of area I often visit when on a trip.
First an aerial of downtown https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4242/3...e39076f1_o.png The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4249/3...a447b987_h.jpg Residential https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4263/3...2448e885_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4251/3...cdc68db7_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4271/3...46fd9171_h.jpg Something looks out of place https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4282/3...a18b721d_h.jpg A small business section in the neighborhood https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4249/3...735002d1_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4261/3...5ce95e24_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4234/3...4555658d_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4242/3...d894c993_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4200/3...59c1798a_h.jpg :) |
It looks from that aerial view like the entire downtown core is connected by sky bridges / elevated pedestrian tunnels. Pretty cool.

It's been a while, but I hope to get back in the swing of posting in this thread.
Harrisburg, PA residential areas https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4379/3...c2a211ef_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4440/3...d08485b4_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4384/3...5696b9b2_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4428/3...1baaf9c5_h.jpg However, Harrisburg like many other northeastern cities has plenty of grit too. An aerial shot of the northern part of the city where some of the blocks are quite empty (a la Detroit) https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4358/3...b7c0bf78_h.jpg Now some grit https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4348/3...af4475fc_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4341/3...41c8c700_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4360/3...d5602b61_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4333/3...8b674b60_h.jpg nice to see flowers in the hood https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4439/3...bec9851a_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4418/3...4fd62386_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4350/3...d04c62bb_h.jpg Lastly, the corner of Summit & Christian in 2011 https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4363/3...2caa785b_h.jpg And in 2015 https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4393/3...498798dc_h.jpg |
The railroad tracks in Harrisburg form a huge physical barrier that bisects the city and cuts off the north side. There are multiple socio-economic factors at play here, but I've wondered how things would have looked if the tracks were never there.

Thought I'd get away from city life. I checked out Pine Ridge, SD (a Census Designated Place) which is part of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_R...an_Reservation )
In many ways it seems as down in the dumps as some of the city grit posts. There are many problems including an uptick in the murder rate (for 2016): http://rapidcityjournal.com/news/loc...6bd807379.html Anyway on to some pics. https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2898/3...0111109c_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2857/3...99c74686_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2933/3...0227ddb9_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2931/3...eb971336_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2860/3...99f72364_h.jpg Yippee....a Pizza Hut https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3936/3...727eadab_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2828/3...b515a43f_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2905/3...a11de613_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2815/3...da45ab16_h.jpg Admin building for the Ogala Sioux https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2834/3...999e3e6d_h.jpg There is a bus system https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2855/3...f2264ded_h.jpg I didn't know there were still Sinclair gas stations https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3938/3...ea831afa_h.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2829/3...a6b1048b_h.jpg Taxes no matter where you go https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2899/3...bc2520c3_h.jpg :( |
