Jeez-Loueez, it looks like every single person drove their own car!
__

Martin Pal, do you have any idea when this was taken? I'm curious whether it was a playoff game or some other game of extra significance.

I also tried to find info on the postcard but came up empty. It's difficult to put a date on it but it certainly looks like it 's from before the makeover and addition of the high dollar luxury seats behind home plate. If that's the case, extra field box seats used to be put in for post-season games. They would have been sticking out beyond the permanent seats on both foul lines, just beyond the dugouts and that doesn't look to be the case here.

There are definitely old foundations and pathways within the patch of trees.

I believe you two are correct ...this spot appears to be remains of the old Palos Verdes College. Good eye(s)!

Of course I had to look for my 'mystery' tank as well. ;)

Well I didn't find it :( , but I noticed one lot is missing a house in about the same location.

(I've rotated this image to match the direction of the 1947 photo) NORTH is at bottom.

This is a shot-in-the-dark, but could this lot be contaminated by what was in the old tank-

It's a possibility, right?

___

postscript:

Just as I was about to leave the area, I noticed a tank that appears to be identical in shape and size to the 1947 tank.

Was the 1947 tank moved to make way for the housing development on the ridge?

This tank is located down the hill on the other side and in a direct line with the old tank 'location' and the remains of Palos Verdes College.

See what I mean.

*Of course this 2nd tank would NOT have been visible in the 1947 photo.
so it might have been there all along.

Long time reader, first time poster here. I went to see the remains of the PV College yesterday, walked among the foundations and remains of some walls. Nice little hike! To answer your question about the tanks, I found this aerial from 1952 clearly showing both tanks (marked with red and blue arrows). Cheers!

49th & Main today

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/q4ITzZ.jpg

makes me want to go back in time.

_

Charles Winsel was born in Belgium in 1868. He came to the US in 1887. He and his partner had a retail seed store in the Rueder block on Main Street downtown. They also had a nursery at 509 E. Third, and from the info on the sign, another at Main and 49th. Charles Winsel, in 1920- 1930 lived with his wife Bertha at 642 N. Jackson, Glendale. The Glendale address appears to be apartments now. The 509 E. Third address is parking lots, and possibly part of the property of the Buddist Temple.

Robert Gibbs was born in June of 1894. He had been an employee of Charles Winsel and after he served in WWI, he became the junior partner in the seed business. His house, where he lived in 1930 at 4301 Kenwood Avenue, in Los Angeles, is still there and appears to be in good repair. This house was only a dozen blocks or so from the location of the nursery at Main and 49th

So cool. I would have liked to have joined you.

I am somewhat surprised that anything of the college is left at all. The buildings appear rather makeshift/temporary.

They even lack foundations. (unless the foundations were added later, but I doubt it)

" The site was temporary pending the construction of a large permanent campus on a nearby parcel of land."
-the other campus was never built due to lack of funds.

-and the college didn't last long / "the campus finally closed down in 1955."

Those high walls of geography in back appear to be the Santa Monica Bluffs....Palisades Park sits on top of that. Since 1942 I think that a lot of those cliffs have eroded....especially in the mid 1950s.

The water tank circled in blue is on "Burma Road," which originally was built as an extension of Crenshaw Boulevard
from Crest Road down to Palos Verdes Drive South. The construction of Crenshaw reactivated an ancient landslide,
which destroyed much of the Portugese Bend Club (and other homes) and continues to plague that area of Palos Verdes.

Here are three views of the Portugese Bend Club taken on February 12, 1955; the first looks west with Palos Verdes
Drive South in the foreground. The club's pier is just east of Inspiration Point:

Crenshaw and its sweeping curves are under construction in this July 1, 1956 shot. Inspiration Point and the PBC pier
are cut off at upper left, and a sliver of the Palos Verdes College site is visible just above the right center edge. The
first landslide movement was observed August 17, 1956:

Thanks FW...here's a bit more on the landslide.

"Plans to extend Crenshaw Boulevard to the coast had been in the works for years.
As the Los Angeles County Road Department cut across Portuguese Canyon
they removed about 500 tons of Dirt and placed it just below what turned out to be
the escarpment of an ancient landslide. The weight of the dirt reactivated the landslide.
"
(seen as a white gash in the photo below)

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/Omsj1C.jpg
https://books.google.com/books?id=5V...ollege&f=false

"The first indication was on Friday, August 29, 1956 when cracks were noticed in a masonry storm culvert.
In the next month, houses in Portuguese Bend began to shift and crack. Roy McCarroll Jr. reported that the swale
where the Palos Verdes College had been had become a LAKE."

a lake!? how'd that happen?

"In the first month, the land moved 3 to 4 inches a day!!
Although it then slowed considerably, 134 homes were destroyed by the slide or were or damaged so badly they were red tagged and pulled down.
