I came across the image below when I was looking for pictures of the bowling alley on Hollywood Boulevard the other day. I can't see any previous mentions.

Sixteen-lane bowling alley will open in N.H. tonight.

Photograph article dated September 23, 1949 partially reads, "North Hollywood's newest amusement, a 16-lane bowling alley known as Airport Bowl, at Clybourne [sic] Ave. and Vanowen St. opens tonight. The project is the first of a $750,000 building program spearheaded by Murray W. Cox, owner and developer.

Airport Bowl is long gone, but the 70-year-old building is still looking good at 10708 Vanowen Street.

As I recall, the authentic recipe should include x tablespoons of meringue powder (providing the foam effect), and no milk.

On occasion the recipe can call for a raw egg.

I'm no expert but I was under the impression that adding raw egg white makes it an Orange Bang, not an Orange Julius.

(...cowers in anticipation of fisticuffs between Orange Julius fans and Orange Bang fans...)

The raw egg was offered at Orange Julius juice bars and its also mentioned in some online Julius recipes.

Some use the whole egg and others suggest just the white.

The Bang uses just the white in powder form.

It all sounds good to me.

I once read an article somewhere years ago in which former Orange Julius employees were relating their adventures. All I remember is that their supply of some special powder from their lords at the Orange Julius admin was not always forthcoming; and that when they ran out, their local franchise managers would tell them to just go to the nearest market and get as many boxes of powdered vanilla pudding mix as possible . . . and that none of their customers ever mentioned tasting any difference.

Mmmmm... The surrounding area doesn't look like Wilshire in the 1940s.

Here's a detail showing the rear/garden of the Town House looking across Lafayette Park. It's dated 1930/1940, but I'd guess the later end of that range. While I can't say that it proves that the picture above was taken here, I would say that it makes it more than possible.

That's exactly what I thought when I first saw the postcard. I was wondering if anyone was going to mention it.

The "special powder" is meringue powder in Orange Julius.

I don't know the ingredients in Orange Bang, as it was an inferior Orange Julius ripoff that I tried a few times and never accepted.

Even the row of distant palm trees match up.

The health danger of raw eggs seems to be more recent than in past decades.

If one is going to use raw eggs, you have to be careful about the source.

The same for raw oysters, raw seafood, etc.

Fruitful misinterpretation
 

Should the photograph not be white (overexposed ?) behind the vegetation and the houses, we would have seen some apartment building in the back like on the photograph posted by Hoss. We wouldn't have thought it's too "country" to be Wilshire. This misinterpretation led to astute posts by Hoss, Noir Noir and CBD !
