LISBON 2019 – Nightsky’s trip to this beautiful port city

LISBON (LISBOA):

In March/April this year (2019), I visited Lisbon for the first time, with my girlfriend. It think it is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, with incredibel steep hills, yellow trams, small picturesque lanes, impressive squares, wide avenues, two impressive bridges, beautiful historic and ultramodern buildings and many world class museums. Lisbon has a great location, facing the wide Tagus River, close to the Atlantic Ocean, and beach resorts as Cascais and Estoril in the metro area. It is also a fairly cheap city by EU standards, it is safe, and people are friendly. We also made a daytrip to Sintra, the mountain town where the impressive palaces can be found. We stayed for 8 days, but it was not enough to explore this city that has so much to offer. We stayed at an apartment in Madragoa in the old town, and the last night at the 4-star Holiday Inn Continental in Avenidas Novas in the North part.

You can read more about the trip, and facts about Lisbon, here (scroll down):

PRACA DO COMERCIO (COMMERICAL SQUARE):

Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square), also known as Terreiro do Paço (Palace Yard, after the palace that was destroyed in the great 1755 Lisbon earthquake), is the heart of Lisbon. The square is facing the Tagus River, in Baixa Pombalina (Lower Town). In the middle of the square is an equestrian statue of King José I. Around the square you find imposing yellow buildings with important museums, such as Lisboa Story and the National Museum. The most significant monument stands at the center of the square's North side; a statue and an arch, Arco Triunfal da Rua Augusta, that marks the entrance to the commercial pedestrian street Rua Augusta, that is filled with typical luxury designer chain stores. Many of Lisbon's famous yellow historical trams departs from Praca de Comercio, and runs along Rua do Prata, that is parallel to Rua Augusta. There is an observation deck on the roof of the arch of triumph.

To be honest, people got stuck with fast food nowadays, I mean, visual stimulation, photos, short videos. It's mentally hard for us to read such many words, I mean, an article.

I don't have dyslexia, but, it's hard for me to read an article on this forum.

25th OF APRIL BRIDGE:

Ponte de 25 de Abril (25th of April Bridge) ,is a suspension bridge South of central Lisbon, just North of Belem. Itis very similar to the Golden Gate Bridge, it is red, also a suspension bridge and was built by the American Bridge Company (that bult San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge but not Golden Gate). The 25th of April bridge was completed in 1974 and has both a road and a railway, and an observation deck with a museum near the west edge. It is 2277m long. Pilar 7 Bridge Expericence is a new, very cool exhibition with elevators that goes up to the level of the road of the bridge, with glass floors with views over Lisbon. It tells the story of the bridge and offers views

BAIRRO ALTO (UPPER OLD TOWN):

Bairro Alto is the upper town of the old town, and one of Lisbon's most popular tourist districts, with hilly narrow streets and lanes, and small squares and restaurants. We didn't see much of this part, but visited similar disitricts next to it, it can be quite hard to figure out where Bairro Alto begins and another, similar looking district begins.

ELEVADOR DE SANTA JUSTA:

Elevador de Santa Justa (Santa Justa Lift), a historical neo-gothic steel elevator tower that was designed by one of Gustav Eiffel’s pupils. It is 45m high and opened in 1899, the only remaining vertical elevator. On the top there is an observation deck and a walkway that pass over the street. Even if the lift is large (there is one that goes down and one up), it doesn't take many people. Thus the waiting line is often long, we waited more then one hour in low season. From the top the views are great. The elevator leads from the lower town, Baixa Pombal, to the upper town - the small square Largo de Camo in the Chiado district.

CARMEN CONVENT:

Carmo Convent (Convento da Carmo) is a beautiful large white ruin church that can be visited. Inside is an archeological museum and the building overlooks Praca Dom Pedro IV. The gothic convent convent, built in 1389, was ruined during the great 1755 earthquake, leaving the church with bare roof, a very beautiful sight.

PRACA ROSSIO (PRACA DOM PEDRO IV):

Near Restauradores and Rossio, at the end of Rua Augusta, you find one of Lisbon's most central squares; Praca Dom Pedro IV, also called Rossio Square. It is a beautiful square with curvy mosaic patterns, and here is a fountain, a pedestal statue of King Pedro IV and several white building, like the National Theater (Teatro Nacional de Maria III), Next to Dom Pedro IV is another large square, Praca da Figueira, where many yellow historical trams and modern buses depart. Next to Figueira is one of Lisbon's most beautiful churches, Igreja de São Domingos. It is a white baroque building, built 1241-1748. It was devastated and rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, and a fire in 1959! It didn't reoppened until 1994, and you can clearly see that the interior is still very damaged, creating a decaying beauty. Lots of open-air restaurants can be found in the area. As on other squares, drug dealers approach people that visit the squares, and the police and government doesn't seem to care about it.

Wonderful tour, thanks! I'm guessing that in most of these older European cities, there's a modern high rise district outside the historic district, like in Paris. Haven't been to Lisbon since the mid-80's.

ROSSIO STATION:

Rossio Station (Estação de Caminhos de Ferro do Rossio) is the main station of Lisbon, it opened in 1891. The beautiful main exterior (during our visit unfortunately large parts were covered by scaffoldings) is facing a small square at the edge of Rossio Square. The station building with its Neo-Manueline (Portugese Late Gothic) was designed by José Luís Monteiro. This is where you take the train to Sintra, like we did, a town where you find many imposing palaces in the same style as this station. The upper part of the station building borders to Barrio Alto, while the lower part Pombaline Baixa.

Thanks a lot. That's true, Lisbon has a very modern district called Parque das Nacoes, built for the 1998 world fair in the Northern outskirts next to the Tagus river. Most highrises are situated there, nothing really tall though, the tallest ones have only 20-30 floors, but some really cool buildings and monuments, plus cablecars can be found there. I will show you in one of the upcoming posts.

There are also some smaller highrise areas in the Northwests part of the city.

ALFAMA:

Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon, and one of the most hilly, situated right next to the city center and the Tagus River. Alfama derives from the Arabic word Al-hamma, which means "hot baths". The most famous of Lisbon's historical yellow trams, Tram 28, climbs the hills of Alfama. Alfama is the foremost district where you can listen to the traditional melancholic fado music, there is even a fado museum here.
Since Alfama survived the big 1755 earthquake, it is the part of Lisbon that is most intact, and most picturesque. Sé (or Metropolitan Cathedral of St Mary Major), Lisbon’s gothic/Romanesque/baroque cathedral from the 12th-13th centuries, was built in stone and is situated on a hill in Alfama. It is the oldest church in the city since it has survived many earthquakes and is a national monument since 1910. The Lisbon Cathedral, as it also is called, is also the seat of the Archdiocese of Lisbon. Many of Lisbon's characteristic tuktuks stop outside the cathedral to attract customers. Several imposing, white churches with landmark towers have survived, Igreja de São Vicente de Fora (also a monastery built in mannerist style 1147-1629), Santa Luzia, Igreja de Santo Estevao. Panteao Nacional (National Pantheon), also called Igreja de Santa Engrácia is a 17th century monument and church, situated on another hill in Alfama. It is a white building with a dome.
At the Santa Luzia church there is an impressive viewpoint over Lisbon, Miradouro De Santa Luzia, with open-air restaurants.
