Best neighbourhood - from above

No aerial skylines or streetscapes- just a high angle pic that hints at "great neighbourhood".

North American cities struggle to compete with Europe's history. This thread might show that old/new can work.

I'll start with TORONTO:

This slice of east of Yonge/market area is a perfect snapshot of how the mayhem of new, old, tall, short, different materials/styles, parks et al can be beautiful in a North America city.

Doesn't hurt to know that street level includes live entertainment, restaurants, shopping, cafes and still one of the best food markets on the continent.

I'm sure New York and Boston have an equivalent but how many more?

^^^ A very nice blend. I like.

A shot of classic NYC. Hell's Kitchen to be precise. Probably not the best looking, but it will provide you with all you need.

Remarkable turnarounds in NYC- bet Hell's Kitchen included.

It was a better actual neighborhood before all the Arab and Russian money moved in (a generation ago, it was merely an affluent urban mixed-use neighborhood), but to me Mayfair has the ideal urban built form for a neighborhood you'd like to live in:

(apologies for the photo quality, I've seen much better but can't find them right now)

It's well-scaled, both in terms of building heights and block sizes. The architecture is nice, and also fine-grained and diverse. There are very large office buildings and also coach houses in mews. There is every form of use represented - office, hotel, retail, restaurant, residential, entertainment, even government. There's a lot of public space (two big squares, plus smaller parks and gardens). And it's quite beautiful.

There's a reason it's some of the world's most expensive real estate.

Photos I recently took of Pittsburgh showing its density.

A picture is worth a thousand words... very cool shot of Brooklyn. I know a bit about it's vibrancy but 6 trips to Manhattan and never explored Brooklyn. Love the green... hints at a very different place than I imagined.
